Book excerpt: It is a continuing policy of the Nautical Almanac Office to prepare issues of the series of Naval Observatory Circulars containing detailed information for observing most total solar eclipses and some annular solar eclipses. This is a service to the international scientific community, based on agreements with Commissions and Working Groups of the International Astronomical Union. A total eclipse of the Sun will occur on Thursday, 17 March and Friday, 18 March 1988. It will be preceded by an associated short partial eclipse of the Moon on 3 March. The duration of totality of the solar eclipse will approach 4 minutes at maximum, the longest since 11 June 1983. Not much of the path is over land. First landfall will occur just after sunrise at the west coast of Sumatra, at Oh 28m U.T. The track will cross Sumatra in three minutes, with the umbral shadow growing so as to increase both the width of the path and the duration of totality. Palembang lies near the central line, and is probably one of the most accessible such places. Bangka Island, just off the east coast of Sumatra, is relatively flat and a mining area. The path will reach Borneo at Oh 36m U.T. with the umbral shadow continuing to expand. It will take approximately 13 minutes to cross the island, and the track will lie completely within Indonesian territory on Borneo. The other major land mass in the path of totality is the southern tip of Mindanao.

Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts is prepared by a special department of the Astronomisches Rechen-Institut under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union. Volume 44 records literature published in 1987 and received before February 15, 1988. Some older documents which we received late and which are not surveyed in earlier volumes are inc1uded too. We acknowledge with thanks contributions of our colleagues all over the world. We also express our gratitude to all organiza tions, observatories, and publishers which provide us with complimentary copies of their publications. Dr. Siegfried Böhme retired from his duties as co-editor of Astronomy and Astro physics Abstracts on December 31, 1987. Since 1950 he partieipated in the biblio graphie work of the institute. He served as a reviewer for the Astronomischer Jahresbericht and became one of the editors of Astronomy and Astrophysics Ab stracts in 1969. After his retirement in 1975 he took care of, particularly, the Russian literature on a voluntary basis for 12 years. It is a pleasure to thank Siegfried Böhme for his valuable contributions. Starting with Volume 33, all the recording, correction, and data processing work was done by means of computers.
