Download or read book Dynamics of Culture written by J. Zvi Namenwirth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1987, is a landmark contribution to macrosociology that extends the tradition of Sorokin, Durkheim, Marx, Weber and other founders of the discipline in new and exciting directions. Using their innovative content analysis methodology to examine American and British political documents, the authors show that the long-term dynamics of culture are subject to their own laws and are independent of the actions of 'great men' and other individual actors. This comprehensive volume brings together over two decades of the authors' research on culture indicators. Key findings include the identification of two long-term cultural cycles in the United States and Great Britain: one is related to party realignments, the other to long-term economic fluctuations. In addition, the authors demonstrate how culture provides the themes that political parties use to interpret economic conditions in their appeal for votes. Other results show that organizational cultures move in opposite directions from those in the culture of the larger society. The book also includes detailed discussions of both the methodology used to analyse text content and related metatheoretical issues in the study of cultural dynamics.

Download or read book From Here to Reality written by Steven Schindler and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2005-08-26 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes life is stranger than reality TV. When Johnny Koester is laid off from his TV production job in New York, he moves west, landing in Los Angeles just as the ashes from the riots are settling. The only job he can find is in the burgeoning new field of "reality television," and suddenly Johnny's working like a dog on Shocking Hollywood Secrets and, better still, Psychic CrimeBusters. Unfortunately for Johnny, life at his new home in Hollywood Court View is even more bizarre than his work. Plagued from day one by his mysterious neighbor, Benny, Johnny soon finds himself following clues having to do with old baseball scorecards and Tony Bennett songs -- and inadvertently setting into motion a series of events that will reveal Benny's deep, dark East Coast past. The only thing going right in Johnny's life is Joan -- the director of a shelter for runaway teens -- who has a heart of gold and a body that makes him weak. He interviewed her for one of his shows, and sparks definitely flew. But will she still love him when Shocking Hollywood Secrets hits the air? Putting his own quirky spin on the classic tale of a New York transplant in L.A., Steven Schindler has penned a hilarious tale of underworld intrigue, whirlwind love, and the somewhat difficult birth of a TV phenomenon.

Download or read book Walking a Tightrope written by David T. McNab and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2005-03-15 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The most we can hope for is that we are paraphrased correctly.” In this statement, Lenore Keeshig-Tobias underscores one of the main issues in the representation of Aboriginal peoples by non-Aboriginals. Non-Aboriginal people often fail to understand the sheer diversity, multiplicity, and shifting identities of Aboriginal people. As a result, Aboriginal people are often taken out of their own contexts. Walking a Tightrope plays an important role in the dynamic historical process of ongoing change in the representation of Aboriginal peoples. It locates and examines the multiplicity and distinctiveness of Aboriginal voices and their representations, both as they portray themselves and as others have characterized them. In addition to exploring perspectives and approaches to the representation of Aboriginal peoples, it also looks at Native notions of time (history), land, cultures, identities, and literacies. Until these are understood by non-Aboriginals, Aboriginal people will continue to be misrepresented—both as individuals and as groups. By acknowledging the complex and unique legal and historical status of Aboriginal peoples, we can begin to understand the culture of Native peoples in North America. Until then, given the strength of stereotypes, Native people have come to expect no better representation than a paraphrase.
Download or read book Polis Ontology Ecclesial Event written by Sotiris Mitralexis and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2018-05-31 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christos Yannaras (born 1935 in Athens, Greece) has been proclaimed 'without doubt the most important living Greek Orthodox theologian' (Andrew Louth), 'contemporary Greece's greatest thinker' (Olivier Clement), 'one of the most significant Christian philosophers in Europe' (Rowan Williams). However, until recently the English-speaking scholar did not have first-hand access to the main bulk of his work: in spite of the relatively early English translation of his The Freedom of Morality (1984), most of his books appeared in English fairly recently - such as Person and Eros (2007), Orthodoxy and the West (2006), Relational Ontology (2011) or The Schism in Philosophy (2015). In this volume, chapters shall examine numerous aspects of Yannaras' contributions to Orthodox theology, philosophy and political thought, based on his relational ontology of the person, later popularised in the Anglophone sphere by John Zizioulas. From political theology to Heidegger and the philosophy of language, from Yannaras' critique of religion to the patristic grounding of the theology of the person and from Orthodoxy to the West, this volume comprises a panorama of Christos Yannaras' transdisciplinary contributions.

Book excerpt: An international array of authors, including some prominent extreme athletes like Jake Burton and Arlo Eisenberg, look at a variety of issues and concerns within the new action extreme sports that are gaining popularity throughout the world. For each sport, an interpretation is presented through two essays: one written by a scholar active in some aspect of research for the given activity, and another by a practitioner/athlete who writes "from the inside out." The juxtaposed essays confront questions about the essence of sport such as, What is sport?; How does it originate?; and What is its use, value, and function? This book offers a fascinating look at how twentieth- and twenty-first-century sport forms emerge, proliferate, and take hold in a sport-crazy world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents Real & Complex Analysis Together Using a Unified Approach A two-semester course in analysis at the advanced undergraduate or first-year graduate level Unlike other undergraduate-level texts, Real and Complex Analysis develops both the real and complex theory together. It takes a unified, elegant approach to the theory that is consistent with the recommendations of the MAA’s 2004 Curriculum Guide. By presenting real and complex analysis together, the authors illustrate the connections and differences between these two branches of analysis right from the beginning. This combined development also allows for a more streamlined approach to real and complex function theory. Enhanced by more than 1,000 exercises, the text covers all the essential topics usually found in separate treatments of real analysis and complex analysis. Ancillary materials are available on the book’s website. This book offers a unique, comprehensive presentation of both real and complex analysis. Consequently, students will no longer have to use two separate textbooks—one for real function theory and one for complex function theory.
