From the twentieth verse of the tenth chapter of the book of Daniel, we learn that every political system has a controlling spirit. The devil is the prince of this world. God's original plan for man was that man would co-operate with Him to dominate the earth.Unfortunately, the devil deceived man. Right from then, man's will became united (married) to the will of the Edenic serpent, in opposition to God's will. Also, it is the perfect will of God that HIS WILL BE DONE ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN but the devil fights tooth and nail to stop this, hence, the "conflict of the ages" known as "spiritual warfare".Spiritual warfare may be defined as a state of perpetual armed battle between the kingdom of God and the rebellious kingdom of Satan. It is the pitching of uncompromising spiritual forces against each other in order to enforce control over creation. In this warfare, there is no neutrality. You are either for the kingdom of God or you are for the kingdom of Satan, the evil one. Every aspect of your thought, word or action either furthers the kingdom of God or it furthers the kingdom of darkness.

Satan was the choirmaster in heaven before he fell (Ezek. 28:13).After his fall, he began to corrupt worship through idolatry the worship of the creature instead of the Creator. Today, idolatry is so pervasive that many actually worship Jehovah on the altar of Baal. Idolatry is using God and worshipping things. Anything you have enthroned side-by-side God in your heart is an idol. God in His absolute holiness hates and punishes sin, especially the sin of idolatry. The easiest way to go into satanic bondage is idolatry. Satan and his fallen angels, demons, operate freely through evil altars. Evil altars are highways to hell. There is always demonic traffic in evil altars. Little wonder God commanded the children of Israel to utterly destroy the evil altars in the land he gave them to possess: "These are the statutes and judgments which ye Shall observe to do in the land, which the LORD God of thy fathers giveth thee to possess it, all the days that ye live upon the earth. Ye shall utterly destroy all the places, wherein the nations which ye shall possess served their gods, upon the high mountains, and upon the hills, and under every green tree: And ye shall overthrow their altars and break their pillars and burn their grooves with fire; and ye shall hew down the graven images of their gods, and destroy the names of them out of that place' Deut. 12:1-3 Notice the choice of words in the scriptures above: "utterly destroy," "overthrow," "break and burn with fire," "hew down." The divine prescription for dealing with evil altars is total annihilation. Even the names of the gods are to be completely obliterated. The evil you fail to confront will contaminate and eventually consume you. If only the children of Israel had obeyed the divine instructions above, they would never have gone into captivity in Babylon. Also observe the phrase "all the days that ye live upon the earth." The scriptures above have past, present and future applications. The Word of God is eternal. This should satisfy those who may think that since we are now in the New Testament, the scriptures have become irrelevant. Writing to the New Testament Church, Apostle John states: "Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen" I John 5:21 One reason God expects his children to employ spiritual violence in dealing with evil altars is because they constitute demonic strongholds. A stronghold is a highly fortified place and will yield only when maximum force is applied. Behind many long-standing difficulties are stronghold demons. Unfortunately, today, despite the proliferation of religious activities, the structures of idolatry are still intact. Consequently, many precious souls are captured in Satan's prisons (evil altars).

Altars were erected by Abraham (Genesis 12:7; 13:4; 22:9), by Isaac (Genesis 26:25), by Jacob (Genesis 33:20; Genesis 35:1, Genesis 35:3), and by Moses ( Exodus 17:15) in the tabernacle, and afterward in the temple. An altar is a symbol of worship. It is usually found at shrines, and it can be located in temples, churches, and other places of worship. Today altars are used particularly in Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Shinto, Taoism, Neopaganism, and Ceremonial Magic, even in Judaism. Many historical faiths also made use of them, including Greek and Norse religions. An altar always represented a place of consecration. Before God gave His Law to Moses, men made altars wherever they were out of whatever material was available. An altar was often built to commemorate an encounter with a higher power that had a profound impact on someone. It must be borne in mind that at the place of the altar, the divine and human worlds interact. Abram, Isaac, Jacob, David, and Gideon, all built altars and worshiped after having a unique encounter with God. The place of altar is a place of exchange, it's a place of communion, it is a place of influence. The contest between Elijah and the prophets of Baal involving an altar demonstrated an interaction between Yahweh and Baal. Noah built an altar and offered a sacrifice to Yahweh. God smelled the aroma and found it pleasing. He responded to Noah's action by declaring that he would never again destroy all living things through a flood. As a place of communion, prayers and worship activities are carried out there. It is a place of discussion, dialogue, and communication with spiritual powers. It is a place of spiritual sacrifice or making of covenants. God blesses His people at the altar of prayer. The foundation for a successful Christian life and ministry is rooted in the altar of prayer. Gen. 8:20-22; Gen. 12:6-8; Lk. 24:49 During times of Israel's rebellion and idolatry, the Lord's altars fell into disrepair. The prophet Elijah, confronting the prophets of Baal on Mt. Carmel, "repaired the altar of the Lord, which had been torn down" (1 Kings 18:30-39). Elijah's restoration of the altar was significant, given the rampant paganism of his day. It was on this rebuilt altar that God rained down fire and put the Baal worshipers to shame When we surrender areas of our lives to the control of the Holy Spirit, we are in effect laying that area on the altar before God. It can help to visualize Abraham's altar where he offered his son Isaac to the Lord (Genesis 22:9). We can ask the Lord what areas of our lives He is requiring that we offer to Him. We can symbolically lay that on the altar and let go. We don't need a flat-topped surface; we can surrender our lives to God on the altar of our hearts at any time.
