Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Total Eclipses of the Sun, Vol. 1 The great eclipse of 1842 marked the dawn of a golden age of physical research upon the Sun, and the conclusion of a half-century of significant research forms a fitting epoch for summarizing salient results in review. Advantage has been taken of this opportunity to present the attractive features of remote eclipses; and the connection of those in early, mediaeval, and later centuries with contemporary history will, it is hoped, add new interest to astronomical events already widely celebrated. The abundant references have been critically verified in the libraries of Amherst College, of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Boston, of Harvard College Observatory, and in the Newberry Library, Chicago. Necessarily the ample illustrations have been chosen from a wide field. Particular attention is called to the collection of coronas of the different eclipses. Especial care has been bestowed upon the chart of eclipse tracks in the future. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is hoped that the Lick Observatory may find means to print the results of observations made by its astronomers in the field, and at Mount Hamilton. Any valuable observations made by other observers, and promptly communicated to the Observatory, will be included in such a publication. Correspondence on this and other subjects relating to the eclipse should be addressed to the Director of the Lick Observatory, Mount Hamilton, San Jose, California. Book The Story of Eclipses Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of Eclipses Classic Reprint written by George F. Chambers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Eclipses Inasmuch as the Earth and the Moon are for our present purpose pratically solid bodies, each must cast a shadow into space as the result of being illuminated by the Sun, regarded as a source of light. What we shall eventually have to consider is: What results arise from the existence of these Shadows according to the Circum stances under which they are viewed P But before reach ing this point, some other preliminary considerations must be dealt with. The various bodies which together make up the solar system, that is to say, in particular, those bodies called the planets - some of them primary, others second ary (alias Satellites or Moons - are constantly in motion. Consequently, if we imagine a line to be drawn between any two at any given time, such a line will point in a different direction at another time, and so it may occasionally happen that three of these ever-moving bodies will come into one and the same straight line. Now the consequences of this state Of things were admir ably well pointed out nearly half a century ago by a popu lar writer, who in his day greatly aided the development of science amongst the masses. When one of the ex tremes of the series of three bodies which thus assume a common direction is the Sun, the intermediate body de prives the other extreme body, either wholly or partially. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Giant Sun and His Family IT may be truly said that this little volume is the result of ten years' experience in lecturing on the subject Giant Sun and His Family. During these ten years the author has had the opportunity to deliver her lectures on this theme before many schools and in connection with the evening lec ture course conducted by the New York City Department of Education. Out of the interest displayed in these lectures has grown this volume, intended for children of the higher grammar grades. Of many valuable and instructive hints and suggestions received from friends and auditors the author has availed herself, and very greatly at their request has incorpo rated these lectures into book form, adding thereto an account of her actual experiences on the three occasions when she was fortunately able to observe the total eclipse of the sun. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Total Eclipse of the Sun, August 17-18, 1868, Vol. 37: As Observed at Guntoor, Under Instructions From the Right Honourable the Secretary of State for India For this purpose I called on Captain davis, Agent Of the Peninsular and Oriental Company, to enlist his services; and at his house was for tunate enough to meet an old companion, Major napier, Of the Royal Artillery. Both these gentlemen promised their aid; and I learnt from them that Colonel addison and Major weir, of h.m.'s 2nd Queen's Royal Regiment, would be likely to be valuable coadjutors. It being then too late to look them up, I asked Major napier to broach the subject, and promised to write as soon as I could. This I did, and it will save time if I say at once what my recommendations were. Ist. I recommended that they Should endeavour to make drawings Of the corona and appendages as accurately as possible, and urged that, if two Observers were available, two sketches, made independently Of the same part (say a quadrant) would be more valuable than single sketches of large portions which could not confirm and interpret each other. 2nd. I undertook to send, if wanted, a polariscope, and I did accordingly send one on savart's principle, with instructions which I thought would be sufficient for its use. 3rd. I suggested that Colonel addison should address Mr. Huggins as to getting a spectroscope for hand use, which he did with a favourable result. I hope, therefore, that there will be some results from Colonel addison's Observations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
