For over half a century he had sustained his dominion of the animal world with an iron fist that the younger generation had known practically no other king all their lives. But in the beginning it hadn't been easy for him getting the exulted stool of kingship. Today he was the eyes of the gods and the ancestors. The Lion King had many challengers to the throne who were equally formidable and even more popular than him. The first was the leopard whose family had always been kings and whose father was ruling until he died recently on the seats. Naturally as the first son, he was expected to take over unopposed, but this was not to be. The audacious Lion threw his hat into the ring and declared that his fore fathers had also been kings and that it was time to take over what had been denied his lineage for a long time. And so ensued a struggle for power that created a lot of animosity in the animal kingdom. Everyone knew it for a certainty that the Lion was a complete usurper to the thrown but who would risk his neck to look the fiery Lion in the face and tell him the truth. Who knows, the stupid fellow might end up as the dinner of the day for his effrontery. A serious tussle became inevitable and before one knew it the whole animal kingdom had been dragged into the fray and forced to take sides. In the mist of all these were two other animals, tough and strong, who never would see eye to eye with the Lion. Because of the great power of the Lion, most animals were afraid of him knowing he could devour them whenever it took his fancy. He was able to subdue all except the Elephant and the Hippopotamus. The Lion had always dreamed of the time he would slaughter both animals, but their great power and size made it a very daunting task. This both worried and angered the great Lion to no end. He therefore hated the Elephant and his crony, the Hippopotamus with all the venom he could muster, a favor the two animals gladly returned. It was therefore not surprising when the two joined the contest for the kingship, firstly to spite their mutual enemy the Lion; than for a call to duty. The lesser animals were forced to queue up behind their respective leaders and a great slaughter never witnessed before in the animal world took place. By the time tempers had cooled down, the impetuous Hippopotamus and his supporters had been subdued and forced to move into the big seas as their new habitat instead of on land they had originally lived. The Elephant had fewer supporters because he was not very fluent in his speeches. He couldn't intimidate many animals enough into joining his camp. Starring defeat in the face, he ate the apple pie and took his men deeper into the thick forest where he's lived up till today. The Leopard's story was a bit pitiable. He was completely defeated and his camps run over by the forces of the rampaging Lion.

The animals had a summit with the supreme being, Eke, in the sky. Greed and lack of altruism cost the Tortoise dearly, as he crash-landed onto the roof of his hut from the sky. His broken shells were mended by Snail, but the result was a tortoise with rough shells. Altruism and concern for others are the morals of this story. The second story which extols the pride of motherhood is on The Farmer Who Buried His Mother Alive. Donealot, the successful farmer, had no choice other than to bury his persistently sick mother in the evil forest at night with the help of his friend, Conscience. The spirits of the evil forest brought his mother back home to a remorseful son with a sobering message, "You can never do enough for your mother." Encounters of the Lion and the Tortoise is the third story. In two separate incidents, Tortoise outwits Lion. The animals that were on their way to work for Lion never got there. Instead, Tortoise intercepted and entertained them all day with his melodious music. Wiseone, the youngest son of Tortoise, survived a murder attempt by Lion. Agunta, Lion's son, was killed instead. Wiseone returns home to a heroic welcome, with a reminder to all of us that wits usually prevail over raw strength, and that slow and steady wins the race. The story of The Two Mischievous Brothers describes how two brothers, Kofi and Uka, conspired to swindle people. On market days, Uka would transform himself into a bull, and his brother Kofi took him to the market. Unsuspecting buyers would exchange the bull for other animals. Uka, the bull, escaped from the buyer and transformed himself back into a human, only to be resold to someone else. The two brothers ran out of luck when Nkume, the buyer with magical powers, beat them to their game. The moral of the story is that it does not pay to be a cheat. The fifth story, Vengeance of the God of Justice - Amadioha, explains the ordeal Chuk went through at the hands of his wicked stepmother, Dab. This heir to the throne of the ancient city of Kaa survived numerous physical and emotional abuses from Dab. He was buried alive for a crime he never committed. Only the timely intervention of the god of justice - Amadioha brought him back from the grave. The moral of the story is that we should be careful not to maltreat the less-privileged in our society, because the natural law of justice is sure to catch up with us if we treat others unfairly.
