In addition, we have investigated the low contrast lesion detection characteristics of our digital mammography system capable of tomosynthesis and did a comparison with a - conventional film/screen technique.

We have developed a method for breast tomosynthesis using a full-field digital mammography system. algorithms have been developed to reconstruct any plane in the breast from a series of low-dose images obtained as the x-ray source moves in an are above the breast. Our results indicate: (1) a radiation dose similar to a conventional mammogram may be used for tomosynthesis, (2) the optimum number of view is seven to mine based on the trade-off between total exposure time and the number of views, and (3) the optimum tomographic angle is 30 to 40 degrees. Finally, we have developed a number of phantoms for basic image quality measurements and complex phantoms for an observer study. Our results indicate tomosynthesis will over improvements over conventional breast screening methods.

The first workshop on "Developing Technologies for Early Breast Cancer Detection" was held in Washington DC in February 2000. The content of the presentations at the workshop is summarized here. A second workshop, which will focus on the process of technology development and adoption, will be held in Washington, DC on June 19-20. A formal report on these topics, including conclusions and recommendations, will be prepared by the committee upon completion of the one-year study.

More than half of these cancers are diagnosed at an early stage and the five-year survival rate is 98%. Therefore early detection and diagnosis is paramount. Digital breast tomosynthesis (dBT) (Selenia Di- mensions, Hologic Corporation, Bedford, MA) was approved in February 2011 by the Food and Drug Adminstration (FDA) to be used in combi- nation with mammography for breast cancer screening. With hopes of overcoming the superimposition issues that arise in mammography, DBT acquires 15 projection images over a 15° angular range. The aims of this work were to quantitatively evaluate image resolution as a function of ac- quisition angle and to characterize the radiation dose to the breast for both mammography and tomosynthesis systems.The slice sensitivity profile (SSP) was used to quantitatively measure the image resolution along the z-axis. Using our in-house designed and man- ufactured breast CT (bCT) scanner, which acquires projection images over a 360° angular range, angular ranges between 15° and 360° were studied by using a subset of the projection images acquired on the bCT scanner. As expected it was found that the z-axis image resolution improves as the angular range of acquisition increases. These results provide a quantita- tive understanding of these trends. Patient mammography images were used to evaluate the shape of three breast mimicking phantoms. These phantoms were designed and manu- factured to be modular allowing for an ion chamber/ radiation dose me- ter to be positioned at various x, y and z locations. Employing a high bandwidth ion chamber, the three dimensional dose distribution to the breast was empirically measured for both dBT and mammography. These measured values serve as a validation for computationally modeled data.Lastly, using computational methods dose coefficients (D(gN) ) were devel- oped for contemporary breast imaging systems. In total,eleven reference tables were generated to address systems that are currently deployed or being developed to be used as clinical imaging tools.
