Book Torah as Teacher

  • Publisher : BRILL

  • ISBN : 9004188428
  • Pages : 265 pages

Download or read book Torah as Teacher written by Kent Reynolds and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-05-17 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite extensive study of the poetic features of Psalm 119, the conceptions it advocates and its contribution to developing Judaism have not been well understood; indeed some scholars have dismissed the psalm as containing little more than wearisome repetition. Reynolds distinguishes between the psalmist and the speaker within the psalm. The psalmist portrays the speaker as an exemplary Torah student and thereby promotes the contemplation of Torah as a facet of ethical instruction. Using this new perspective, Reynolds contributes a fresh and coherent understanding of the ideas in Psalm 119. He explains the function of its length and highlights its emphasis on Torah study that became axiomatic in Rabbinic Judaism.

Book Neo Calvinism and the French Revolution

Download or read book Neo Calvinism and the French Revolution written by James Eglinton and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-28 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French Revolution was the scene of much intellectual and social upheaval. Its impact touched a wide range of subjects: the relationship of the church to the state, social relationships, science, literature, fashion, philosophy and theology. Although the French Revolution's momentum was felt across Europe and North America, it met a particularly interesting response in the Netherlands, at that time the scene of a burgeoning neo-Calvinist movement. In that context, the likes of Groen van Prinsterer, Abraham Kuyper and Herman Bavinck responded to the French Revolution's ideals and influence in a variety of intellectual and practical ways. This book approaches that Dutch response from a range of historical and theological perspectives, and in so doing explores the relationship between the French Revolution and the development of neo-Calvinism. Beginning with historical portraits of Bavinck and Kuyper in relation to the Revolution, the perspectives offered also include, amongst others, the place of multilingualism in neo-Calvinism and the Revolution, neo-Calvinist and Revolutionary approaches to fashion, a dialogue between Kuyperian theology and Kieslowski's Three Colours trilogy, and a contemporary neo-Calvinist critique of French laïcité. This book forms part of a wider Project neo-Calvinism supported by the Theologische Universiteit Kampen and the VU University Amsterdam.

In addition, its distinguished editor, Joze Krasovec, has commissioned a wide range of contributions devoted to translations of the Bible in many languages, including the Slavonic languages, Croatian, Czech, Hungarian, Polish and the Scandinavian languages. The 82 chapters in this work, mostly in English, are divided into three parts. Part I, on ancient translations and hermeneutics of the Bible, contains contributions by M.-E. Boismard, S.P. Brock, K.J. Cathcart, R.P. Gordon, L.J. Grech, M. Hengel, O. Keel, J. Lust, E. Tov and others, with a notable comprehensive bibliographic survey of oriental Bible translations from the first millennium by M. van Esbroeck. Part II, on Slavonic and other translations of the Bible, includes the first detailed study of the history of the Slavonic Bible, by Francis J. Thomson (over 300 pp.). Part III, with essays by such scholars as J.H. Charlesworth, D.J.A. Clines, J. Gnilka, M. G÷rg, N. Lohfink and A.C. Thiselton, concerns the interpretation of the Bible in translation, philosophy, theology, art and music. This translation will allow a reader, who has no background in Hebrew, to see the text from a Hebraic perspective, without the interjection of a translator's theological opinions and bias. As this style of translation also identifies the morphology of each Hebrew word using the English language, it is a useful tool for those who are learning to read Biblical Hebrew.

  • Author : Dean J. Burgon

Download or read book Unholy Hands on the Bible written by Dean J. Burgon and published by Sovereign Grace Publishers,. This book was released on 1990 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do you get when you buy this volume? You get all six of the Works of Dean John W. Burgon, which in effect gives you an excellent introduction to Textual Criticism in The Traditional Text of the New Testament. In The Causes of the Corruption of the Traditional Text of the Gospels you will learn how the Gnostics, Manecheans, Ebionites, Ariams, and other heretics sought to halt the spread of Christianity by putting out corrupt manuscripts. Discover the motivation that caused the critics to elevate these adulterated manuscripts to a place of adoration. See for yourself the overwhelming evidence against the thousands of changes in the popular new versions that dilute the Scriptures. The Last Twelve Verses According to the Gospel of Mark shows that over 2,000 manuscripts and as many Greek lectionaries contain these verses without any brackets or doubting footnotes. Did you know that except for the NKJV, MKJV, LITV, the nine other major new versions have bracketed the last 12 verses of Mark (or in a footnote indicated that they do not believe they are authentic). WHY? It's a mystery. There are only three (3) Greek manuscripts that do not have these verses. And in 200 pages of proofs, Burgon shows that those two are so edited at the place where these verses belong that anyone can see the scribes were looking at these verses in the older mss. they were copying. As Dr. Gordon H. Clark wrote, If a version brackets these verses, then you know that they are not going by the evidence. The Revision Revised is a Critique of the English Revised Version of 1881, with additional applications to the Modern Translations. There is an excellent critique of the Westcott and Hort textualtheories. Proof of the Genuineness of God Manifested in the Flesh contains an unanswered and unanswerable defense of 1 Timothy 3:16. The Woman Taken In Adultery gives a defense of the authenticity of John 7:53-8:11. Conflation and The 'Neutral' Text by Edward Miller, M.A. gives an additional critique of Dr. Hort's theories. Get this volume, and arm yourself to fight for the God-breathed words that God has preserved for you that you might have life and faith. Every one of His words are precious. We need not give up thousands of them...
