Book The Geography of the Heavens and Class Book of Astronomy

Download or read book The Geography of the Heavens and Class Book of Astronomy written by Elijah H. Burritt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-05 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geography of the Heavens and Class-Book of Astronomy: And Class-Book of Astronomy The rapid progress of the science of astronomy, for the last few years, has again rendered it necessary to revise the Geography of the Heavens - a work, the popularity of which is sufficiently proved by a sale of 300,000 copies. The editor has, therefore, availed himself of the occasion to make such improvements, both in the book and maps, as seemed to be demanded by the progress of the science, and the most approved methods of instruction. Among these improvements we may mention the following: - 1. The matter of the book has been thoroughly assorted; the most important paragraphs being printed in large type, and numbered, as in most modern text-books; while that which seemed in the main explanatory of the more important portions, is left in small print. By this means an agreeable variety is afforded to the eye, while the book is made to contain far more matter, and is, consequently, far more complete, than it could otherwise have been. 2. A new set of Questions has been prepared throughout. These are brief, topical and suggestive; and numbered to answer to the paragraphs to which they relate. 3. A complete list of Telescopic Objects in each constellation has been inserted; giving the Right Ascension and Declination of each object; with a brief description of it; and easy landmarks and directions by which it may be found; and references to telescopic views of the same in the new maps. The color and relative magnitude of the components of the double stars, are also given. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Course of Practical Astronomy for Surveyors 1883

Download or read book A Course of Practical Astronomy for Surveyors 1883 written by J. R. Oliver and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course of Practical Astronomy for Surveyors, 1883: With the Elements of Geodesy This manual has been drawn up for the use of the Cadets of the Royal Military College of Canada. The first five chapters on Practical Astronomy embrace that portion of the subject with which all Land Surveyors this country ought to be familiar. The remaining chapters, together with the part of the work which treats of Geodesy, touch on the more important parts of the additional course, as regards those subjects, laid down by Government for candidates for the degree of Dominion Topographical Surveyor. It has become absolutely necessary to draw up some compilation of this kind, because, while many of the Cadets are anxious to qualify themselves as far as possible in the above-mentioned course, the number of different books they would have had to refer to in order to obtain the requisite knowledge would have entailed on them a heavy expense. In order to make the work as cheap as possible the number of diagrams has been cut down to a minimum, it being intended to supply the place of expensive plates of instruments et cetera by lecture illustrations. Download or read book Geodetic Sciences written by Bihter Erol and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2021-06-30 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in space-borne technologies lead to improvements in observations and have a notable impact on geodesy and its applications. As a consequence of these improvements in data accuracies, spatial and temporal resolutions, as well as the developments in the methodologies, more detailed analyses of the Earth and a deeper understanding of its state and dynamic processes are possible today. From this perspective, this book is a collection of the selected reviews and case-study articles that report the advances in methodology and applications in geodesy. The chapters in the book are mainly dedicated to the Earth’s gravity field theory and applications, sea level monitoring and analysis, navigation satellite systems data and applications, and monitoring networks for tectonic deformations. This collection is a current state analysis of the geodetic research in theory and applications in today’s modern world.

Book Astronomy With the Naked Eye

Download or read book Astronomy With the Naked Eye written by Garrett Putnam Serviss and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Astronomy With the Naked Eye: A New Geography of the Heavens, With Descriptions and Charts of Constellations, Stars, and Planets The specific things undertaken in this book are: First, the presentation of a set of star-charts, accompanying and illustrating the text, and containing the constellation figures, so that the reader may see those strange forms that the imaginations of men for thousands of years have drawn in the sky. The charts also contain all the stars that have received distinctive names, and with these all the other stars that the unaided eye readily perceives. The sixth-magnitude stars are visible to ordinarily good eyes, but they are inconspicuous. The charts are reductions from Heis's Atlas Cælestis. A chart of the southern sky has been added to cover the constellations not visible from our latitudes. Second, the march of the constellations across the sky, resulting from the annual revolution of the earth in its orbit, is followed from month to month, and they are presented in the text according to the times of their successive arrivals near the meridian, the north and south line of the sky. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geography of the Heavens, and Class Book of Astronomy: Accompanied by a Celestial Atlas To be convinced of this, let any person sit down to a celestial globe or map, and from this alone, make out a set of instructions in regard to some favorite constellation, and then desire his pupil to trace out in the firmament, by means of it, the vari ous stars which he has thus described. The pupil will find it little better than a fancy sketch. The bearings and distances, and especially, the compar ative brightness, and relative positions, will rarely be exhibited with such accuracy that the young observer will be inspired with much confidence in his guide. I have demonstrated to myself, at least, that the most judicious instructions to put on paper for the. Guide of the young in this study are those which I have used most successfully, while in a clear eve ning, without any chart but the firmament above, I have pointed out, with my finger, to a group of listeners, the various stars which compose this and that constellation.
