Book The Topology of Fibre Bundles

Download or read book The Topology of Fibre Bundles written by Norman Steenrod and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1999-04-25 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fibre bundles, now an integral part of differential geometry, are also of great importance in modern physics--such as in gauge theory. This book, a succinct introduction to the subject by renown mathematician Norman Steenrod, was the first to present the subject systematically. It begins with a general introduction to bundles, including such topics as differentiable manifolds and covering spaces. The author then provides brief surveys of advanced topics, such as homotopy theory and cohomology theory, before using them to study further properties of fibre bundles. The result is a classic and timeless work of great utility that will appeal to serious mathematicians and theoretical physicists alike.

Download or read book Groups of Self Equivalences and Related Topics written by Renzo A. Piccinini and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-11-14 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the subject of Groups of Self-Equivalences was first discussed in 1958 in a paper of Barcuss and Barratt, a good deal of progress has been achieved. This is reviewed in this volume, first by a long survey article and a presentation of 17 open problems together with a bibliography of the subject, and by a further 14 original research articles.

Download or read book Fibre Bundles written by D. Husemöller and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of a fibre bundle first arose out of questions posed in the 1930s on the topology and geometry of manifolds. By the year 1950 the defini tion of fibre bundle had been clearly formulated, the homotopy classifica tion of fibre bundles achieved, and the theory of characteristic classes of fibre bundles developed by several mathematicians, Chern, Pontrjagin, Stiefel, and Whitney. Steenrod's book, which appeared in 1950, gave a coherent treatment of the subject up to that time. About 1955 Milnor gave a construction of a universal fibre bundle for any topological group. This construction is also included in Part I along with an elementary proof that the bundle is universal. During the five years from 1950 to 1955, Hirzebruch clarified the notion of characteristic class and used it to prove a general Riemann-Roch theorem for algebraic varieties. This was published in his Ergebnisse Monograph. A systematic development of characteristic classes and their applications to manifolds is given in Part III and is based on the approach of Hirze bruch as modified by Grothendieck.

Book Connections Curvature and Cohomology

Download or read book Connections Curvature and Cohomology written by Werner Hildbert Greub and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1972 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph developed out of the Abendseminar of 1958-1959 at the University of Zürich. The purpose of this monograph is to develop the de Rham cohomology theory, and to apply it to obtain topological invariants of smooth manifolds and fibre bundles. It also addresses the purely algebraic theory of the operation of a Lie algebra in a graded differential algebra.

Book Differential Geometry and Mathematical Physics

Download or read book Differential Geometry and Mathematical Physics written by Gerd Rudolph and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-22 with total page 830 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is devoted to the study of the geometrical and topological structure of gauge theories. It consists of the following three building blocks:- Geometry and topology of fibre bundles,- Clifford algebras, spin structures and Dirac operators,- Gauge theory.Written in the style of a mathematical textbook, it combines a comprehensive presentation of the mathematical foundations with a discussion of a variety of advanced topics in gauge theory. The first building block includes a number of specific topics, like invariant connections, universal connections, H-structures and the Postnikov approximation of classifying spaces.Given the great importance of Dirac operators in gauge theory, a complete proof of the Atiyah-Singer Index Theorem is presented. The gauge theory part contains the study of Yang-Mills equations (including the theory of instantons and the classical stability analysis), the discussion of various models with matter fields (including magnetic monopoles, the Seiberg-Witten model and dimensional reduction) and the investigation of the structure of the gauge orbit space. The final chapter is devoted to elements of quantum gauge theory including the discussion of the Gribov problem, anomalies and the implementation of the non-generic gauge orbit strata in the framework of Hamiltonian lattice gauge theory. The book is addressed both to physicists and mathematicians. It is intended to be accessible to students starting from a graduate level.
