Book excerpt: Representations of Musical Signals describes a new generation of digital audio and computer music systems made possible by recent advances in digital signal processing theory, hardware design, and programming techniques. It explores new representations of musical signals that can have profound effects on the way musicians conceive of and realize musical ideas. In particular, the book focuses on models that combine time-domain and frequency-domain representations (grains, wavelets, and physical models), visual programming and advanced user interfaces, and that incorporate musical knowledge using artificial intelligence techniques and adaptive neural networks. Generative models give us the ability to synthesize or re-synthesize multimedia; conditional generative modeling empowers us to control the outputs of these models. By steering a generative model with conditioning information, we can sketch the essential aspects of our creative vision, and the generative model will fill in the details. This dissertation explores the possibilities of generative modeling as a creative tool, with a focus on applications to music and audio. The dissertation proceeds in three parts: 1. We develop algorithms and evaluation metrics for aligning musical scores to audio. Alignments provide us with a dense set of labels on musical audio, that we can use to supervise conditional generation tasks such as transcription: synthesis of a musical score conditioned on an audio performance. This work on alignments leads to the construction of MusicNet: a collection of 330 freely-licensed classical music recordings, together with over 1 million annotated labels indicating the precise time of each note in every recording, the instrument that plays each note. We use this dataset to train state-of-the-art music transcription models for the MIREX Multiple Fundamental Frequency Estimation task. 2. We construct autoregressive generative models of musical scores, which exploit invariances in the structure of music. Whereas most recent work on music modeling has represented music as an ordered sequence of notes, we explore an alternative representation of music as a multi-dimensional tensor. We consider a variety of factorizations of the joint distribution over these tensors. We then turn to our attention to discriminative modeling of scores, using this tensor representation. We construct a classifier that can reliably identify the composer of a classical musical score. Our methods, which operate on the generic tensor score representation, outperform previously reported results using SVM and kNN classifiers with handcrafted features, specialized for the composer classification task. 3. We develop a sampling algorithm for likelihood-based models that allows us to steer an unconditional generative model using conditioning information. We work within a Bayesian posterior sampling framework, using a pre-trained unconditional generative model as a prior, to sample from the posterior distribution of a conditional likelihood. Samples are obtained using noise-annealed Langevin dynamics to construct a Markov chain to approximate a sample from the posterior distribution. We develop these ideas for a variety of models and applications, including source separation, in both the visual and audio domains.

Book excerpt: In the audio domain, the disciplines of signal processing, machine learning, psychoacoustics, information theory and library science have merged into the field of Music Information Retrieval (Music-IR). Music-IR researchers attempt to extract high level information from music like pitch, meter, genre, rhythm and timbre directly from audio signals as well as semantic meta-data over a wide variety of sources. This information is then used to organize and process data for large scale retrieval and novel interfaces. For creating musical content, access to hardware and software tools for producing music has become commonplace in the digital landscape. While the means to produce music have become widely available, significant time must be invested to attain professional results. Mixing multi-channel audio requires techniques and training far beyond the knowledge of the average music software user. As a result, there is significant growth and development in intelligent signal processing for audio, an emergent field combining audio signal processing and machine learning for producing music. This work focuses on methods for modeling and analyzing multi-timbral musical instrument mixtures and performing automated processing techniques to improve audio quality based on quantitative and qualitative measures. The main contributions of the work involve training models to predict mixing parameters for multi-channel audio sources and developing new methods to model the component interactions of individual timbres to an overall mixture. Linear dynamical systems (LDS) are shown to be capable of learning the relative contributions of individual instruments to re-create a commercial recording based on acoustic features extracted directly from audio. Variations in the model topology are explored to make it applicable to a more diverse range of input sources and improve performance. An exploration of relevant features for modeling timbre and identifying instruments is performed. Using various basis decomposition techniques, audio examples are reconstructed and analyzed in a perceptual listening test to evaluate their ability to capture salient aspects of timbre. These tests show that a 2-D decomposition is able to capture much more perceptually relevant information with regard to the temporal evolution of the frequency spectrum of a set of audio examples. The results indicate that joint modeling of frequencies and their evolution is essential for capturing higher level concepts in audio that we desire to leverage in automated systems.

In this thesis we investigate the perspective of structured, intermediate representations through an integration of theoretical aspects related to separable sound objects, dictionary-based methods of signal analysis, and object-oriented programming. In contrast to examples in the literature that approach an intermediate representation from the signal level, we orient our formulation towards the symbolic level. This methodology is applied to both the specification of analytical techniques and the design of a software framework. Experimental results demonstrate that our method is able to achieve a lower Itakura-Saito distance, a perceptually-motivated measure of spectral dissimilarity, when compared to a generic model and that our structured representation can be applied to visualization as well as agglomerati...
