Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A social history of British civilian life in the months following the declaration of the end of the second world war. On the 8th of May in 1945 British Prime Minister Winston Churchill finally announced to waiting crowds that the Allies had accepted the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany and that the war in Europe was over. For the next two days, people around the world celebrated. But the “slow outbreak of peace” that gradually dawned across the world in the summer of 1945 was fraught with difficulties and violence. Beginning with the signing of the German surrender to the Western Allies in Reims on 7 May, The Summer of ’45 is a “people’s history” which gathers voices from all levels of society and from all corners of the globe to explore four months that would dictate the order of the world for decades to come. Quoting from generals, world statesmen, infantrymen, prisoners of war, journalists, civilians and neutral onlookers, this book presents the memories of the men and women who danced alongside Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret outside Buckingham Palace on the first night of peace; the reactions of the vanquished and those faced with rebuilding a shattered Europe; the often overlooked story of the “forgotten army” still battling against the Japanese in the East; the election of Clement Attlee’s reforming Labour government; the beginnings of what would become the Iron Curtain; and testimony from the first victims of nuclear warfare in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Combining archive sources and original interviews with living witnesses, The Summer of ’45 reveals the lingering trauma of the war and the new challenges brought by peacetime.

Book Topics In Organic Polarography

Download or read book Topics In Organic Polarography written by P. Zuman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though the nwnber of requests for reprints and the number of quotations in the Science Citation Index has indicated an ever-increasing interest in topics of organic polarography, I have often felt that the reason that some work is less known may well be because the papers were published in less accessible journals. Therefore, I was pleased when I was asked to prepare a selection of my papers on organic polarography for reprinting. This collection of papers may indicate some of the possibilities offered by polarography in the study of properties of organic compounds. The fact that the papers are published in one volume, not only makes the information more easily accessible for the reader, but also enables a direct comparison of related topics. The mode of selection is discussed in the Introduction. The papers reprinted in this volume are mostly based on work carried out in the J. Heyrovsky Institute of Polarography of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in Prague, in cooperation with my co-workers. I would like to take this opportunity of thanking all of them for the pleasure I got from this cooperation on the solution of varying problems of organic electrochemistry .

Book Our Social World Condensed

Download or read book Our Social World Condensed written by Jeanne H. Ballantine and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2019-07-09 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our Social World: Condensed, by Jeanne H. Ballantine, Keith A. Roberts, and Kathleen Odell Korgen, inspires you to develop your sociological imaginations, to see the world and personal events from a new perspective, and to confront sociological issues on a day-to-day basis. The award-winning author team organizes the text around the "Social World" model, a conceptual framework that demonstrates the relationships among individuals (the micro level); organizations, institutions, and subcultures (the meso level); and societies and global structures (the macro level). The use of the Social World Model across chapters (represented in a visual diagram in the chapter openers) helps you to develop the practice of using three levels of analysis, and to view sociology as an integrated whole, rather than a set of discrete subjects. The Condensed version is adapted from Our Social World: Introduction to Sociology. The Sixth Edition of the Condensed version is made approximately 30% shorter than the full edition by removing selected boxes, editing the main narrative, and combining four chapters into two (Family/Education, and Politics/Economics).

Book Museum Librarianship 2d ed

Download or read book Museum Librarianship 2d ed written by Esther Green Bierbaum and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2000-09-15 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this second edition to Museum Librarianship, the author offers guidance in planning and providing information services in a museum--beginning or revitalizing the library; collection development and the bibliographic process; technical services; administration; space and equipment requirements; fundamental services; extended information services; and the information partnership between museums and their libraries. The Internet and other electronic resources are fully covered. The focus of this new edition has shifted slightly from mainly dealing with the start-up aspects to an emphasis on the goals of library and information services in a museum, and the processes through which such services can be achieved. The author's underlying goal is to help enhance and enrich the encounter of the museum-goer with enduring objects, in a time when we all seem to be assailed on every side by random noise and flickering image.
