Book Small Town Tourism in South Africa

Download or read book Small Town Tourism in South Africa written by Ronnie Donaldson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates small town tourism development in South Africa taking into account the most common strategies: branding, promotion, festivals and theming. The contents of the book resonate with the intersection of the power elite and their impacts on small town tourism. Because the book focuses on small town geographies in South Africa, the literature on small town tourism in the country is reviewed in Chapter 2 to provide a contextual background. Each subsequent chapter begins with an overview of international literature to give the conceptual context of the case studies each chapter explores. In Chapter 3 the concept of small town tourism branding is illustrated by an exploration of the Richmond book town. In Chapter 4 the branding theme is probed further in an investigation of two winners of the Kwêla Town of the Year competition namely Fouriesburg and De Rust. Chapter 5 documents the branding of Sedgefield through its proclamation as Africa’s first Cittaslow (slow town), a process driven by the local power elite to the exclusion of town’s poor who have no understanding of the intentions of the Cittaslow movement and its potential benefits for the town. Chapter 6 is a case study of Greyton’s tourism-led rural gentrification by which a small town has transformed in three decades to become a sought after place of residence for elite inmigrants so making the town a jewel tourism destination while reinforcing racial segregation. Because festivals and events - creations of the wealthy - have made significant financial contributions to small towns, Chapter 7 considers festivals and events as strategies to market and brand small towns in a particular way. Case studies of the economic impacts of festivals on small towns are assessed and the assessment methodologies used are critiqued. Chapter 8 provides a synthesis by drawing on the thesis of the urban growth machine by power elites.

Book Introduction to South Africa

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Africa is a country located at the southernmost tip of Africa, and it has a population of around 58 million. The land is incredibly diverse, ranging from beaches and mountains to savannas and forests, and it is home to many different cultures and languages. South Africa has a rich history, with evidence of human habitation dating back over 100,000 years. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the country was colonized by the British and the Dutch, which led to the oppression and segregation of the native population. This system, known as apartheid, was officially dismantled in the early 1990s when Nelson Mandela became the first black president of South Africa. Today, South Africa is a democratic country with a diverse economy that is largely driven by mining, agriculture, and tourism. The country is grappling with many of the same issues facing other developing nations, such as income inequality, unemployment, and social inequality. Despite these challenges, South Africa is a vibrant and dynamic nation with a rich cultural heritage and a bright future. The people of South Africa are determined to build a better future for themselves and their children, and they are working hard to make their country a more prosperous and just society.

Book The Diaspora s Role in Africa

Download or read book The Diaspora s Role in Africa written by Stella-Monica N. Mpande and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-07 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africans living in the diaspora have a unique position as potential agents of change in helping to address Africa’s political and socioeconomic challenges. In addition to sending financial remittances, their multiple, hybrid identities in and out of geographical and psychocultural spaces allow them to play a role as cultural and political ambassadors to foster social change and sustainable development back in their African homelands. However, this hybrid position is not without challenges, and this book reflects some of the conundrums faced by members of the diaspora as they negotiate their relationships with their home countries. The author uses her lived experiences and empirical research to ask: are members of the diaspora conduits of Western cultural hegemony at the cost of their traditional preservation and meaningful development in Africa? How does the Western media’s portrayal of Africa as the "Dark Continent" in the 21st century influence their decision-making process to invest back home? How could African nations’ governments manage their relationships with citizens abroad to motivate them to invest in their home countries? How do some citizen-residents in Africa and African Diaspora communities perceive each other in the context of Africa’s development? How could the African Diaspora collaborate with citizen-residents across growth sectors to impact Africa’s development? The book hopes to inspire agents of change within the diaspora and features diverse African entrepreneurs’ success stories and their experiences of tackling these challenges. The book will be of interest to aspiring entrepreneurs, researchers across African studies, and the expanding and vibrant field of diaspora research.
