Book Optimizing Power Reliability in Mobile Computing with DVFS

Download or read book Optimizing Power Reliability in Mobile Computing with DVFS written by Somdip Dey and published by Somdip Dey. This book was released on 2023-05-10 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low power mobile computing systems such as smartphones and wearables have become an integral part of our daily lives and are used in various ways to enhance our daily lives. Majority of modern mobile computing systems are powered by multi-processor System-on-a-Chip (MPSoC), where multiple processing elements are utilized on a single chip. Given the fact that these devices are battery operated most of the times, thus, have limited power supply and the key challenges include catering for performance while reducing the power consumption. Moreover, the reliability in terms of lifespan of these devices are also affected by the peak thermal behaviour on the device, which retrospectively also make such devices vulnerable to temperature side-channel attack. This book is concerned with performing Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS) on different processing elements such as CPU & GPU, and memory unit such as RAM to address the aforementioned challenges. Firstly, we design a Computer Vision based machine learning technique to classify applications automatically into different categories of workload such that DVFS could be performed on the CPU to reduce the power consumption of the device while executing the application. Secondly, we develop a reinforcement learning based agent to perform DVFS on CPU and GPU while considering the user's interaction with such devices to optimize power consumption and thermal behaviour. Next, we develop a heuristic based automated agent to perform DVFS on CPU, GPU and RAM to optimize the same while executing an application. Finally, we explored the affect of DVFS on CPUs leading to vulnerabilities against temperature side-channel attack and hence, we also designed a methodology to secure against such attack while improving the reliability in terms of lifespan of such devices. This book is based on the doctoral thesis titled, "Novel DVFS Methodologies For Power-Efficient Mobile MPSoC." Cite: Dey, Somdip (2023) Novel DVFS Methodologies For Power-Efficient Mobile MPSoC. Doctoral thesis, University of Essex.

Book The Global Smartphone

Download or read book The Global Smartphone written by Daniel Miller and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2021-05-06 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The smartphone is often literally right in front of our nose, so you would think we would know what it is. But do we? To find out, 11 anthropologists each spent 16 months living in communities in Africa, Asia, Europe and South America, focusing on the take up of smartphones by older people. Their research reveals that smartphones are technology for everyone, not just for the young. The Global Smartphone presents a series of original perspectives deriving from this global and comparative research project. Smartphones have become as much a place within which we live as a device we use to provide ‘perpetual opportunism’, as they are always with us. The authors show how the smartphone is more than an ‘app device’ and explore differences between what people say about smartphones and how they use them. The smartphone is unprecedented in the degree to which we can transform it. As a result, it quickly assimilates personal values. In order to comprehend it, we must take into consideration a range of national and cultural nuances, such as visual communication in China and Japan, mobile money in Cameroon and Uganda, and access to health information in Chile and Ireland – all alongside diverse trajectories of ageing in Al Quds, Brazil and Italy. Only then can we know what a smartphone is and understand its consequences for people’s lives around the world.

This book was released on 2021-02-05 with total page 837 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mobile technologies have become a staple in society for their accessibility and diverse range of applications that are continually growing and advancing. Users are increasingly using these devices for activities beyond simple communication including gaming and e-commerce and to access confidential information including banking accounts and medical records. While mobile devices are being so widely used and accepted in daily life, and subsequently housing more and more personal data, it is evident that the security of these devices is paramount. As mobile applications now create easy access to personal information, they can incorporate location tracking services, and data collection can happen discreetly behind the scenes. Hence, there needs to be more security and privacy measures enacted to ensure that mobile technologies can be used safely. Advancements in trust and privacy, defensive strategies, and steps for securing the device are important foci as mobile technologies are highly popular and rapidly developing. The Research Anthology on Securing Mobile Technologies and Applications discusses the strategies, methods, and technologies being employed for security amongst mobile devices and applications. This comprehensive book explores the security support that needs to be required on mobile devices to avoid application damage, hacking, security breaches and attacks, or unauthorized accesses to personal data. The chapters cover the latest technologies that are being used such as cryptography, verification systems, security policies and contracts, and general network security procedures along with a look into cybercrime and forensics. This book is essential for software engineers, app developers, computer scientists, security and IT professionals, practitioners, stakeholders, researchers, academicians, and students interested in how mobile technologies and applications are implementing security protocols and tactics amongst devices.

Download or read book Franchise Era written by Fleury James Fleury and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Hollywood shifts towards the digital era, the role of the media franchise has become more prominent. This edited collection, from a range of international scholars, argues that the franchise is now an integral element of American media culture. As such, the collection explores the production, distribution and marketing of franchises as a historical form of media-making - analysing the complex industrial practice of managing franchises across interconnected online platforms. Examining how traditional media incumbents like studios and networks have responded to the rise of new entrants from the technology sector (such as Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix and Google), the authors take a critical look at the way new and old industrial logics collide in an increasingly fragmented and consolidated mediascape.

Book Systemic Dramaturgy

Download or read book Systemic Dramaturgy written by Michael Mark Chemers and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2022-11-17 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Working theatrically with technology Systemic Dramaturgy offers an invigorating, practical look at the daunting cultural problems of the digital age as they relate to performance. Authors Michael Mark Chemers and Mike Sell reject the incompatibility of theatre with robots, digital media, or video games. Instead, they argue that technology is the original problem of theatre: How can we tell this story and move this audience with these tools? And if we have different tools, how can that change the stories we tell? This volume attunes readers to “systemic dramaturgy”—the recursive elements of signification, innovation, and history that underlie all performance—arguing that theatre must be understood as a system of systems, a concatenation of people, places, things, politics, feelings, and interpretations, ideally working together to entertain and edify an audience. The authors discuss in-depth the application of time-tested dramaturgical skills to extra-theatrical endeavors, including multi-platform performance, installations, and videogames. And they identify the unique interventions that dramaturgs can and must make into these art forms. More than any other book that has been published in the field, Systemic Dramaturgy places historical dramaturgy in conversation with technologies as old as the deus ex machina and as new as artificial intelligence. Spirited and playful in its approach, this volume collates histories, transcripts, and case studies and applies the concepts of systemic dramaturgy to works both old and avant-garde. Between chapters, Chemers and Sell talk with with some of the most forward-thinking, innovative, and creative people working in live media as they share their diverse approaches to the challenges of making performances, games, and digital media that move both heart and mind. This volume is nothing less than a guide for thinking about the future evolution of performance.

Book The Ridiculously Simple Guide to Pixel 3 and 3 XL

Download or read book The Ridiculously Simple Guide to Pixel 3 and 3 XL written by Phil Sharp and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-11-23 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Google and Apple have always taken a different approach to developing their Operating System (OS). Apple's iOS is often seen as a wall gardened; it's an OS built for one thing and one thing only: the iPhone.Unlike Apple, Google built an OS that anyone could use; in fact, Google didn't even have a phone when it released the Android OS in 2007. Its flagship phone was called the HTC Dream, and it was built, as the name suggests, by HTC.Google was never a hardware company, but a few years back, they decided it was time to start being one. They had created an OS that was arguably superior to the iPhone, and it was time they had an official phone to go with it.The Pixel phone was first introduced in 2016. It wasn't a terrible phone, but it simply did not stand up against the big guns of the Android OS world--like the Galaxy and Note. Google learned a lot and the next year released a far better phone: the Pixel 2.In 2018, Google released its best phone yet: Google Pixel 3. Photographers and critics alike praised the camera, which many consider the best mobile camera on the market. Google was finally ready for its close up.Whether you are switching from an iPhone or another Android device, this book is for you. It will break down everything you need to know about the device and keep it ridiculously simple!Ready to learn more? Let's get started!
