Book Biodiversity Offsets Between Regulation and Voluntary Commitment

Download or read book Biodiversity Offsets Between Regulation and Voluntary Commitment written by Marianne Darbi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-20 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are witnessing an alarming, global biodiversity crisis with an ongoing loss of species and their habitats. In response, a number of tools and approaches – including some that are contested – are being explored and promoted. Biodiversity offsets are one such approach, and deserve critical examination since the debate surrounding them has often been oversimplified and lacking practical evidence. As such, this study presents a refined typology including seven types of biodiversity offsets and taking into account different contexts, governance arrangements and drivers. It draws on a detailed analysis of theoretical concepts to explain the voluntary implementation of biodiversity offsets using an internet-based (netnographic) research approach. Furthermore it builds on a broad global explorative base of 72 practical examples and presents in-depth case studies for each type. The results reveal a number of global tendencies that allow recommendations to be made for different locations, contexts and stakeholders. They also encourage the expansion of this research field to respond to the pressing needs of policy and practice.

Book Knowledge Graphs for eXplainable Artificial Intelligence Foundations Applications and Challenges

Download or read book Knowledge Graphs for eXplainable Artificial Intelligence Foundations Applications and Challenges written by I. Tiddi and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2020-05-06 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The latest advances in Artificial Intelligence and (deep) Machine Learning in particular revealed a major drawback of modern intelligent systems, namely the inability to explain their decisions in a way that humans can easily understand. While eXplainable AI rapidly became an active area of research in response to this need for improved understandability and trustworthiness, the field of Knowledge Representation and Reasoning (KRR) has on the other hand a long-standing tradition in managing information in a symbolic, human-understandable form. This book provides the first comprehensive collection of research contributions on the role of knowledge graphs for eXplainable AI (KG4XAI), and the papers included here present academic and industrial research focused on the theory, methods and implementations of AI systems that use structured knowledge to generate reliable explanations. Introductory material on knowledge graphs is included for those readers with only a minimal background in the field, as well as specific chapters devoted to advanced methods, applications and case-studies that use knowledge graphs as a part of knowledge-based, explainable systems (KBX-systems). The final chapters explore current challenges and future research directions in the area of knowledge graphs for eXplainable AI. The book not only provides a scholarly, state-of-the-art overview of research in this subject area, but also fosters the hybrid combination of symbolic and subsymbolic AI methods, and will be of interest to all those working in the field.

Book Theory and Practice in Heritage and Sustainability

Download or read book Theory and Practice in Heritage and Sustainability written by Elizabeth Auclair and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-04-22 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores cultural sustainability and its relationships to heritage from a wide interdisciplinary perspective. By examining the interactions between people and communities in the places where they live it exemplifies the diverse ways in which a people-centred heritage builds identities and supports individual and collective memories. It encourages a view of heritage as a process that contributes through cultural sustainability to human well-being and socially- and culturally-sensitive policy. With theoretically-informed case studies from leading researchers, the book addresses both concepts and practice, in a range of places and contexts including landscape, townscape, museums, industrial sites, every day heritage, ‘ordinary’ places and the local scene, and even UNESCO-designated sites. The contributors, most of whom, like the editors, were members of the COST Action ‘Investigating Cultural Sustainability’, demonstrate in a cohesive way how the cultural values that people attach to place are enmeshed with issues of memory, identity and aspiration and how they therefore stand at the centre of sustainability discourse and practice. The cases are drawn from many parts of Europe, but notably from the Baltic, and central and south-eastern Europe, regions with distinctive recent histories and cultural approaches and heritage discourses that offer less well-known but transferable insights. They all illustrate the contribution that dealing with the inheritance of the past can make to a full cultural engagement with sustainable development. The book provides an introductory framework to guide readers, and a concluding section that draws on the case studies to emphasise their transferability and specificity, and to outline the potential contribution of the examples to future research, practice and policy in cultural sustainability. This is a unique offering for postgraduate students, researchers and professionals interested in heritage management, governance and community participation and cultural sustainability.

Book Digital Heritage

    Book Details:
  • Author : Marinos Ioannides
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2010-11-02
  • ISBN : 3642168736
  • Pages : 562 pages

Download or read book Digital Heritage written by Marinos Ioannides and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-11-02 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprises the proceedings of the Third International Euro-Mediterranean Conference (EuroMed 2010) on the historical island of Cyprus. The focal point of this conference was digital heritage, which all of us involved in the documentation of cultural heritage continually strive to implement. The excellent selection of papers published in the proceedings reflects in the best possible way the benefits of exploiting modern technological advances for the restoration, preservation and e-documentation of any kind of cultural heritage. Above all, we should always bear in mind that what we do now may be used by people in another century to repair, rebuild or conserve the buildings, monuments, artifacts and landscapes that seem important. Recent events like earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, fires and insurrections show that we can never be too prepared for damage to, and loss of, the physical and, non-tangible elements of our past and, in general, our cultural heritage. To reach this ambitious goal, the topics covered included experiences in the use of innovative recording technologies and methods, and how to take best advantage of the results obtained to build up new instruments and improved methodologies for do- menting in multimedia formats, archiving in digital libraries and managing a cultural heritage. Technological advances are very often reported in detail in specialized fora. This volume of proceedings establishes bridges of communication and channels of co- eration between the various disciplines involved in cultural heritage preservation.

This year’s Conference is organized by the Greek Foundation for Research in the Quantitative, Social and Economic Subjects, which is a non-profit Company with Articles of Association registered in the Chamber of Non-for- profit organizations. This Conference is a continuation, in a broader sense, of the four International Conferences which were organized by myself during the years 2003, 2009, 2013, and 2015, under the auspices of the Technological Educational Institute of Athens, as well as the 1st and 2nd International Conference on Quantitative, Social, Biomedical and Economic Issues, during the years 2017, 2018, Athens. The International Conferences of the years 2017, 2018, were organized under the Auspices of the Greek Foundation for Research in the Quantitative, Social and Economic Subjects which is based in Athens, Greece and has links with an International group of Academics. This Conference is focusing on the impact of Education on the innovation process, the productivity and the well-balanced development of a country. The findings of (Varsakelis, Volume 35, Issue 7, September 2006, Pages 1083-1090, ELSEVIER) support the hypothesis that the higher the investment of a society in the quality of education, the higher the output of innovation activity. Furthermore, the development level of the governmental institutions is positively correlated with innovation activity. The aim of this Conference is to become a forum for the analysis of subjects related to the Quantitative, Social, Biomedical and Economic Sciences, the present state in Greece for the sectors of Education, Health, Innovative Business and the lessons learnt from them, in the context of the serious economic crisis in Europe and, particularly, in Greece. This Conference, also, is the opportunity for many highly respected scientists to present and exchange ideas in their respective research areas with the aim of initiating new joint projects. The new developments in the sectors of contemporary Science and Economy are important and the need for a clear and responsible information is very high regarding, also, the possibility of fake news through the Internet.

Book Semantics in Adaptive and Personalised Systems

Download or read book Semantics in Adaptive and Personalised Systems written by Pasquale Lops and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-18 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph gives a complete overview of the techniques and the methods for semantics-aware content representation and shows how to apply such techniques in various use cases, such as recommender systems, user profiling and social media analysis. Throughout the book, the authors provide an extensive analysis of the techniques currently proposed in the literature and cover all the available tools and libraries to implement and exploit such methodologies in real-world scenarios. The book first introduces the problem of information overload and the reasons why content-based information needs to be taken into account. Next, the basics of Natural Language Processing are provided, by describing operations such as tokenization, stopword removal, lemmatization, stemming, part-of-speech tagging, along with the main problems and issues. Finally, the book describes the different approaches for semantics-aware content representation: such approaches are split into ‘exogenous’ and ‘endogenous’ ones, depending on whether external knowledge sources as DBpedia or geometrical models and distributional semantics are used, respectively. To conclude, several successful use cases and an extensive list of available tools and resources to implement the approaches are shown. Semantics in Adaptive and Personalised Systems definitely fills the gap between the extensive literature on content-based recommender systems, natural language processing, and the different types of semantics-aware representations.

Book Sex Work Immigration and Social Difference

Download or read book Sex Work Immigration and Social Difference written by Julie Ham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-08-25 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public discourses around migrant sex workers are often more confident about what migrant sex workers signify morally but are less clear about who the ‘migrant’ is. Based on interviews with immigrant, migrant and racialized sex workers in Vancouver, Canada and Melbourne, Australia, Sex Work, Immigration and Social Difference challenges the ‘migrant sex worker’ category by investigating the experiences of women who are often assumed to be ‘migrant sex workers’ in Australia and Canada. Many ‘migrant sex workers’ in Melbourne and Vancouver are in fact, naturalized citizens or permanent residents, whose involvement in the sex industry intersects with diverse ideas and experiences of citizenship in Australia and Canada. This book examines how immigrant, migrant and racialized sex workers in Vancouver and Melbourne wield or negotiate ideas of illegality and legality to obtain desired outcomes in their day-to-day work. Sex work continues to be the subject of fierce debate in the public sphere, at the policy level, and within research discourses. This study interrogates these perceptions of the ‘migrant sex worker’ by presenting the lived realities of women who embody or experience dimensions of this category. This book is interdisciplinary and will appeal to those engaged in criminology, sociology, law, and women’s studies.
