Book excerpt: Toombs County, Georgia is named after Robert Toombs, a Confederate General in the Civil War. For many decades, it has been called "Bloody Toombs" because of its reputation for alleged lawlessness and violence, often of a racial nature. The memoir "Bloody Toombs" is about growing up white and privileged in Toombs County during the fifties and sixties; coming of age in Atlanta during the Civil Rights Movement; being an antiwar activist in San Francisco, Boston, and Atlanta during the Vietnam War; and studying at Tufts and Harvard after graduating from Emory University in the late sixties. Much of the book chronicles the author's affliction with manic depression, which has been in remission since 1991. "Bloody Toombs" is called an "allegory" as it deals with social and ethical issues of universal application and concern.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE AUTHOR I'm a native of Cairo, Georgia and the son of a former banker and school teacher. When I was four, the family moved to Dublin, Georgia (my father's home town). Prior to beginning the first grade we moved to Lyons, Georgia. Here I lived for the next fifty-five years except for my college days at Georgia Southern College where I earned a business degree. I would attend school, grow up, marry, raise two children, work in the nuclear industry, fight cancer, retire, and get another college degree in history while living in Lyons. Since 2016, my wife and I have lived in Statesboro, Georgia. My love of American history, mostly the War between the Sates era, interested my joining the Sons of Confederate Veterans where I am a past commander of the local camp and the Military Order of the Stars and Bars where I served as chaplain. I've given talks to schools and to camps about various events during those turbulent days in our nation's history. Other interests include painting (mostly bricks) and college football. I'm a Christian and have been active in my church in roles as deacon, Sunday school teacher, various committees, and even the choir once. Presently, I'm sharing a daily devotional called From My Rocker with my social media friends. Hopefully, I will be able to publish a devotional book once I have enough entries. Book excerpt: Few places in the United States feel the impact of courthouse disasters like the state of Georgia. Over its history, 75 of the state's counties have suffered 109 events resulting in the loss or severe damage of their courthouse or court offices. This book documents those destructive events, including the date, time, circumstance, and impact on records. Each county narrative is supported by historical accounts from witnesses, newspapers, and legal documents. Maps show the geographic extent of major courthouse fires. Record losses are described in general terms, helping researchers understand which events are most likely to affect their work.

  • Publisher : Mercer University Press
  • Release : 2007
  • ISBN : 9780881460889
  • Pages : 366 pages

Download or read book This Georgia Rising written by Patrick Novotny and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Georgia Rising is a study of Georgia's political changes in the decade of the Second World War and in the postwar years of the 1940s. Georgia's political establishment underwent challenges in the 1940s in everything from Georgians defending the state's university system from attacks by Governor Eugene Talmadge to challenges by Georgia's larger cities and towns to the state's county unit system to the early postwar stirrings of the modern civil rights movement. An array of progressive forces--including Georgia's veterans of the Second World War, college and university students, newspaper editors and reporters in the state's larger circulating newspapers and smaller town newspapers--fought for change in some of the state's political institutions, culminating in the 1942 election of Governor Ellis Arnall and in 1945 the changes to the state constitution. This Georgia Rising is a detailed study of the gubernatorial races of the 1940s as they are interwoven with the larger political and social changes of wartime and then postwar Georgia. This book draws not only from Georgia's larger circulation newspapers but also focuses on its smaller circulation newspapers and especially its African-American newspapers, including The Atlanta Daily World and The Savannah Tribune. This Georgia Rising offers a detailed and rich narrative of a decade of far-reaching change in twentieth-century Georgia. --Publisher description.
