Download or read book Overstated written by Colin Quinn and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2020-09-22 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The popular comedian, social commentator, and star of Red State Blue State tackles the condition of our union today: “Thoroughly entertaining.” —Booklist (starred review) Utah: The Church of States Vermont: The Old Hippie State Florida: The Hot Mess State Arizona: The Instagram Model State Wisconsin: The Diet Starts Tomorrow State The United States is in a fifty-states-wide couples’ counseling session, thinking about filing for divorce. But is that really what we want? Can a nation composed of states that are so different possibly hang together? Colin Quinn, writer and star of Red State Blue State and Unconstitutional, calls us out state-by-state, from Connecticut to Hawaii. He identifies the hypocrisies inherent in what we claim to believe and what we actually do. Within a framework of big-picture thinking about systems of government—after all, how would you put this country together if you started from scratch today?—to dead-on observations about the quirks and vibes of the citizens in each region, Overstated skewers us all: red, blue, and purple. Ultimately, it’s infused with the same blend of optimism and practicality that sparked the United States into being. “The author lands his punches [and] spares neither right- nor left-leaning terrain.” —Kirkus Reviews “Quinn pulls off the remarkable feat of being both very informative and thoroughly entertaining. This delightful read is highly recommended.” —Booklist (starred review)

This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pragmatic Markers in Irish English offers 18 studies from the perspective of variational pragmatics by established and younger scholars with an interest in the English of Ireland. Taking a broad definition of pragmatic markers (PMs) as items operating outside the structural limits of the clause that encode speakers’ intentions and interpersonal meanings, this volume includes discussions of traditional PMs like sure that are strongly associated with Irish English, recent globally-spreading innovations like quotative like, and studies of tag questions, vocatives and emoticons. The data sets used cover most of the existing and developing corpora of Irish English as well as historical legal depositions, films, advertising and recent fiction, interviews, recorded conversations, and blogs. The authors address general issues such as what corpora of Irish English might add to the description of PMs in general, the interaction of Irish and Irish English, historical and contemporary uses of specific PMs, and the usage of recent immigrants to Ireland.

Download or read book Prehistoric Journey The First Expeditions written by D.L. Narrol and published by Fiction4All. This book was released on 2024-09-06 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book 1 of Colin Limmerick's adventures. Colin Limmerick lives a double life. His rugged good looks and merchant fishing trade don't coincide with his desire to continue his higher education at a London university. His Irish working-class pirate-like behavior repulses his stuffy elitist professor making it difficult for his research to be taken seriously. Looks are deceiving when his research idea to prove Darwin by demonstrating the great Irish deer megaloceros giganticus was sexually selected against. He meets physicist, Dr. Sasha Dimitrikov, an eccentric escapee from the Russian Revolution, who has developed a time travel theory. The only way Limmerick can prove his research is to venture through a prehistory journey. In the midst of his frustration, he becomes enchanted with a lovely research student, Rosa, who he manages to woo with great difficulty. Her Edwardian prudish scowl continuously pushes him away, despite her stimulated attraction for him. She mistakenly tosses Limmerick aside and is lured into Dr. Dimitrikov's arms. This occurs when the three scholars are on the first prehistoric expedition 10,000 years in the past in search of megaloceros. They encounter a prehistoric environment that is too unknown and unmanageable for modern people to survive. They are faced with several challenges but manage to conquer by survival of the fittest. Limmerick's research on prehistoric evolution is greatly admired by a foreign professor from India, Dr. Sharma, who introduces his voluptuous daughter, Amoli. She falls instantly in love with Limmerick where he is at first reluctant but succumbs to her seduction dance not realizing the clash of the cultures that lie ahead. At the same time, he is faced with a new challenge recognizing the first expedition left unexpected damage. He must time travel again in order to mend the chaotic mess he left the first time. He and Dr. Dimitrikov are faced with another prehistoric expedition, which is more life threatening than the first especially when they are violently confronted by a family of Neanderthals. His excessive drinking carries through the novel but heightens with his destructive behavior when he finally comes to terms knowing two 20th century men can't play God and that he must fight for what he truly loves.
Download or read book Natural Causes written by Steve Law and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-06-06 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I wrote FRUITION because I was interested in what my life might have been like if things had gone differently back in my teens. At the time I was forty-something and I had a lot to think about. Death was on my mind and like many people I expect, I wished I could go back and try again, knowing even a little of what I'd learned. I employed a kind of reincarnation device - four books for four lives. Most of the story is set in the afterlives, which let me enjoy myself inventing landscapes, cities, people and wildlife. I also had fun putting in some philosophical arguments, a love story and a few sex scenes. It's a typical first novel - it's got everything. But the basic question throughout is the same - life goes wrong. There's no one big obvious trauma to blame. Somehow it just never works out. Why is that? And can it be changed? NATURAL CAUSES is the last of four books in the FRUITION quartet

Download or read book A Very Punchable Face written by Colin Jost and published by Crown. This book was released on 2020-07-14 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In these hilarious essays, the Saturday Night Live head writer and Weekend Update co-anchor learns how to take a beating. “I always wanted to punch his face before I read this book. Now I just want to kick him in the balls.”—Larry David NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY Cosmopolitan • Vulture • Parade If there’s one trait that makes someone well suited to comedy, it’s being able to take a punch—metaphorically and, occasionally, physically. From growing up in a family of firefighters on Staten Island to commuting three hours a day to high school and “seeing the sights” (like watching a Russian woman throw a stroller off the back of a ferry), to attending Harvard while Facebook was created, Jost shares how he has navigated the world like a slightly smarter Forrest Gump. You’ll also discover things about Jost that will surprise and confuse you, like how Jimmy Buffett saved his life, how Czech teenagers attacked him with potato salad, how an insect laid eggs inside his legs, and how he competed in a twenty-five-man match at WrestleMania (and almost won). You'll go behind the scenes at SNL and Weekend Update (where he's written some of the most memorable sketches and jokes of the past fifteen years). And you’ll experience the life of a touring stand-up comedian—from performing in rural college cafeterias at noon to opening for Dave Chappelle at Radio City Music Hall. For every accomplishment (hosting the Emmys), there is a setback (hosting the Emmys). And for every absurd moment (watching paramedics give CPR to a raccoon), there is an honest, emotional one (recounting his mother’s experience on the scene of the Twin Towers’ collapse on 9/11). Told with a healthy dose of self-deprecation, A Very Punchable Face reveals the brilliant mind behind some of the dumbest sketches on television, and lays bare the heart and humor of a hardworking guy—with a face you can’t help but want to punch.
