Book excerpt: Tony Hunt's Sketchbook illustrates the connection between brain and hand in conceiving structural concepts and details as possible solutions to structures in architecture. This new edition features 100 previously unpublished sketches. These sketches illustrate alternative structural concepts, ideas and details developed by Tony Hunt for over one hundred projects throughout his professional life. They relate directly to projects built and unbuilt in the field of structural engineering and were either produced at the time of relevant design meetings or as a response to a problem posed by an architect and are, therefore, a record of ideas proposed at the particular time. They are a source of design inspiration and an insight into the work of this well respected engineer.

Book Tony Hunt s Sketchbook

Download or read book Tony Hunt s Sketchbook written by Anthony Hunt and published by Architectual Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Tony Hunt's Structures Notebook' was a basic primer on structural engineering in a visual and non-mathematical form. 'Tony Hunt's Sketchbook' illustrates the connection between brain and hand in conceiving structural concepts and details as possible solutions to structures in architecture. Drawing is an important tool for initial communication of ideas. Design concepts originate in the mind and are transferred roughly and quickly to paper as freehand sketches. These sketches illustrate alternative structural concepts, ideas and details for discussions with the design team. The drawings in this sketchbook are a selection from notebooks produced by Tony Hunt over the last 30 or so years. They relate directly to projects built and unbuilt in the field of structural engineering. The author has worked extensively with most of he well-known architects in this country and some abroad. The sketches represent early thoughts and structural ideas on a wide range of projects, both large and small. They were either produced at the time of relevant design meetings or as a response to a problem posed by an architect and are, therefore, a record ideas proposed at the particular time. In most cases a range of structural alternatives are proposed. Sometimes the first idea was the one adopted. All drawings are freehand. The style and approach has varied over the years and has become 'freer' in later years, but all are by the author. World famous author - the first Engineer's sketchbook in the UK Tony Hunt is well known for his sketches Companion volume to the successful 'Tony Hunt's Structures Notebook'

Book Building Structures Illustrated

Download or read book Building Structures Illustrated written by Francis D. K. Ching and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-11-30 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Francis D.K.Ching brings his trademark presentation to the structural design studio with this major new work co-authored by Barry Onouye and Douglas Zuberbuhler. Taking a new approach to strucural design, Ching and his co-authors show how structural systems of a building -- as an integrated assembly of elements with pattern, proportions, and scale -- are related to the essential aspects of architectural design: formal and spatial composition, program fit, coordination with other building systems such as enclosure and mechanical systems, code compliance, etc. No other work by Francis D.K. Ching brings together so many aspects of architectural design as an integrated reference. Designers, builders, and students alike will gain a new understanding of structural principles and planning, without the need for mathematics. Using Ching's trademark presentation, Structural Patterns is illustrated throughout with line drawings to present the essential presence of structural systems in buildings, but also helps the reader make informed decisions for architectural design.

Book Structure and Architecture

Download or read book Structure and Architecture written by Angus J Macdonald and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2007-06-07 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Structure and Architecture' is an essential textbook for students and practitioners of architecture and structural engineering. MacDonald explains the basic principles of structure and describes the ranges of structure types in current use. Furthermore, the book links these topics directly with the activity of architectural design and criticism. An update of the first edition, 'Structure and Architecture 2ed' includes a revised opening chapter, and a new section that discusses prominent buildings constructed since the last edition was published in 1994. Angus MacDonald deals with structures holistically, relating detailed topics back to the whole structure and building. He aims to answer the questions: What are architectural structures? How does one define the difference between the structure of a building and all of the other components and elements of which it consists? What are the requirements of structures? What is involved in their design? An understanding of the concepts involved in answering these questions and an appreciation of how the structure of a building functions enhances the ability of an individual to appreciate its architectural quality. This book is unique in that it discusses the structural component of architectural design in the context of visual and stylistic issues.

Book Constructing Professional Discourse

Download or read book Constructing Professional Discourse written by Concepción Orna-Montesinos and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01-17 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the fascinating role that language plays in the construction of non-verbal objects by mapping out the ontological meaning of the specialised concepts and the domain-specific knowledge embedded in them. In doing so, it provides a comprehensive linguistic insight into the discourse of professional domain-specific communities and hence, into the communication practices and procedures of those communities. In this respect, the book offers a response to the claims made by many of the most influential applied linguists today, such as Vijay Bhatia (1993, 2004), John Swales (1990, 2004) or Ken Hyland (2002), among others, who have consistently defended the need for applied linguistic research into the textual, generic and social perspectives on the under-researched interrelatedness of the discoursal and professional practices of a discipline. Specifically, this book provides readers with an integrative multi-perspective approach to the study of professional, domain-specific discourses. While it mainly draws on the tenets of genre theory and discourse semantics, it also nurtures from the theoretical and empirical foundations of applied linguistics, cognitive linguistics, corpus linguistics and ontological engineering. The book starts from the analysis of domain specific texts as final written products with specific lexico-grammatical, semantic and rhetorical features to later enquire into the written products as textual artefacts closely linked to the social context of production and interpretation of the text. This integrative approach provides fresh new insights into the way the processes of writing are affected by the community-specific, institutional and socio-historical circumstances in which domain-specific texts are produced.

Book Hunting Sketches Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hunting Sketches Classic Reprint written by Anthony Trollope and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-03 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hunting Sketches Ir seems to be odd, at first sight, that there should be any such men as these but their name and number is legion. If we were to deduct from the hunting-crowd farmers, and others who hunt because hunting is brought to their door, of the remainder we should find that the men who don't like it have the preponderance. It is pretty much the same, I think, with all amuse ments. How many men go to balls, to races. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
