Book excerpt: "Level One" is a frightening fictional future possibility. "Level One" examines the potential self-destruction of taking matters into your own hands in times of war and the corruption of power. "Level One" questions presuppositions of anarchy and the burden of command. What happens when the associated responsibilities of a commander are eclipsed by personal gain and deep-rooted vendetta psychology? How does one measure the greater good geopolitically in order to make the correct decisions? Unlike Jack Denali's last book, "Novus Ordo Seclorum," which uncovered the essence of personal relationships; "Level One" digs deep into group behavioral psychology. The protagonist, a former sniper frustrated by being leashed by the government and unable to stop terrorists without cutting reams of red tape, finds that with a little cash and the cooperation of other like minded soldiers, who are willing to aid his cause and thereby circumvent any bureaucracy, that in effect they can have an impact on global terrorism. As he recycles war profits gained from the investment of his inheritance, he soon has his own army, his own command. "Level One" magnifies the infrastructure of empire building in an action adventure glimpse of the potential future of our world.

Once she's out of handcuffs, and with no paying work on the frigid horizon, Esther takes a small role in a grad student's film project in Chinatown—where her friend semi-retired hit man Lucky Battistuzzi, who escaped Lopez's sweep at the Little Italy restaurant where Esther works between acting jobs, is hiding out in a Chinese-Italian mortuary. Esther and Lucky soon realize that something strange is going on in Chinatown, where beautifully handcrafted fortune cookies are inflicting deadly mystical curses on the hapless victims who receive them as gifts—and before long, Esther learns that Detective Lopez is one of the recipients. As preparations for Chinese New Year heat up in the ice-covered neighborhood, when the streets will be filled with costumed lion dancers, firecrackers, and dense crowds, Esther and Lucky summon the help of their friend Max, a semi-immortal mage and semi-solvent bookseller, to help them save Chinatown and Lopez (with whom Esther is not on speaking terms) from a mystical murderer of maniacal menace."--Publisher description.

But regarding his past, only a few fragments are known—a scandalous birth shrouded in mystery, service as Blackbeard’s bosun, and a reputation that inspired fear in even the worst of pirates. Set against the colorful background of historical piracy on the Spanish Main, Sea Road to Neverland tells the story of the man who would eventually be known as Captain Hook. As a young man, James turns his back on his family and set out to sea, earning the name “Hook” along the way. He takes command of the Jolly Roger from the despotic Red Michael Conner and finds a jovial Irishman named Smee among the crew. He also meets a ship’s boy named Tuck with no memory of his past—and the boy offers friendship to a man who believes he needs no friends. When the ship is driven off course and brought to a strange and unknown shore, the men instinctively fear the place, for they know they are unwelcome invaders in Neverland. Filled with swashbuckling adventure and intrigue, this novel presents the story of the life of Captain James Hook, showing a classic figure of literature from a fresh perspective.

Book excerpt: 'Immersive from the start and satisfying to the finish, a faultless tale from one of our best writers of historical crime fiction' JESS KIDD In the darkness, her face glimmered like polished bone, white, but with a bluish tinge. Her lips were dry and cracked. I saw them move; a black tongue pass over them as if she was trying to speak, but she made no sound. A plague is coming to London. Dreaded more than the Devil himself, cholera - the 'blue death' - spares no one. As fear grows across the city, Jem Flockhart and Will Quartermain are called to the bedside of a dead man, murdered, and with his throat torn out, in the back room of a brothel. When an innocent man is taken to Newgate, Jem and Will have until execution day to save him. The search for the identity of the corpse, and the killer, takes them to the gates of Blackwater Hall, home to the secretive, and corrupt Mortmain family. With the approach of autumn, no one is safe, for the fog brings with it an evil and poisonous sickness - the perfect shroud for murder. When family secrets are prised out into the open, people begin dying. But who, or what, is the cause? Searching for answers, Jem and Will are driven underground, to the passages and tunnels beneath the city's teeming streets. Here, their adversary proves to be more elusive, and more deadly, than ever. Book excerpt: “What is it that we’re doing, when we’re acting well?” This is the question famously posed by Earle Gister, the legendary head of the acting department at Yale School of Drama from 1979 to 1999. In Acting Action, actor, director, and teaching artist Hugh O’Gorman invites readers to explore the question in detail. Focusing on playing action—one of the essential components of acting passed on to renowned acting teachers Earle Gister and Lloyd Richards by Paul Mann—Acting Action is divided into two parts: context and practice. The first section provides a thorough examination of the theory behind the core elements of playing action. The second section presents a step-by-step rehearsal guide for actors to integrate playing action into their preparation process. Acting Action offers a foundation for how to get started and build the core of a performance. More precisely, it provides a practical guide for actors, directors, and teachers in the technique of playing action, addressing a void in the world of actor training by illuminating what exactly to do in the moment-to-moment act of acting.

However, while the Tejas Rangers rode horses over the vast wastelands of a single planet, Star Warriors flew and lived on their thunderturkies, as their class of battle starships were called. They went from planet to planet. Rangers fought with six shot slug throwers, rifles, and shotguns. Star Warriors fought with the latest technological weapon systems, including a sling pistol, heavily armed thunderturkey, and Hawk star fighter. Rangers rode with other rangers and were controlled by the Tejas government. Star Warriors operated alone and were governed by the League of Star Warriors. Rangers went after common criminals. Star Warriors went after master criminals, powerful criminal organizations, and other evil people, who were above the law for one reason or another reason or another. Rangers brought lawbreakers before judges, who handed out justice. Star Warriors were judges, juries, and off time executioners. Unlike other law enforcement professionals and members of military organizations, Star Warriors were still Star Warriors even after they voluntarily retired or were barred from serving on active duty. The forehead of each Star Warrior was covered with tattoos identifying him as a Star Warrior, telling how many years he spent of active duty, and telling the number of times he had been wounded. People sought out those tattoos when they needed help because the local police couldn’t or wouldn’t help them. Jack Quantum had been medically retired. Yet, he still operated as a Star Warrior. He stopped two assignation attempts, and saved a small boy from suffering through a painful and ugly death. He unmasked a major drug lord and stopped his plans to take over the star trader he was flying on. Jack became the Master of the star trader after being critically injured during a firefight the star trader had with an overwhelming number of starships. Yet, he was instrumental in saving the starship and over forty thousand people as it blindly flew across the galaxy.

Book Tommy s Field

Download or read book Tommy s Field written by Nikki Mark and published by Union Square & Co.. This book was released on 2024-01-23 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A moving memoir that reminds us of the power of play to inspire, unite, and heal—and that sometimes what brings us the most pain can be the source of our greatest inspiration. In April 2018, Nikki and Doug Mark’s perfectly healthy twelve-year-old-son, Tommy, went to sleep one night and never woke up. They’re still not exactly sure why. Devastated, Nikki embarked on an unconventional journey to create a legacy for Tommy and to heal her heart. She created a plan to transform neglected land in a Los Angeles public park into a state-of-the-art athletic field, honoring Tommy’s love of soccer and sharing his spirit of play with others. After family, friends, and LA’s soccer community banded together to raise over a million dollars for the project, park neighbors resistant to change threatened to derail it. Throughout Nikki’s journey, a remarkable string of incidents convinced her that her recently departed son was guiding her through the process. Ultimately, Tommy’s enduring spirit and the beautiful game he loved taught her how to navigate the challenges she faced along the way.
