Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Characters you won’t forget in four middle-grade novels from a writer who “has captivated young readers for a quarter of a century” (Corvallis Gazette-Times). From mountain climbing to banana-eating contests, visiting a Kentucky farm to traveling to another world, these four middle-grade novels from Tom Birdseye have something for everyone. A Tough Nut to Crack: Eighth-grader Cassie Bell’s father and grandfather had a falling-out years ago, so she’s never met him. But when Grandpa Ruben is injured in a tractor accident, the family travels from Oregon to his Kentucky farm. From the way her dad talks about him, she pictured a mean old man, but her grandfather is lively, goofy, and loving. Still, Dad and Grandpa Ruben can barely stand to be in the same room. Can Cassie find a way to get them back together again? “The novel’s simplicity, humor, action, and warmth will appeal to a broad range of readers.” —School Library Journal Storm Mountain: Thirteen-year-old Cat Taylor’s father and uncle, a famous search-and-rescue team, died on Storm Mountain two years ago. When her cousin Ty impulsively takes their ashes to scatter on the mountain, Cat has no choice but to climb up after him. But when a blizzard traps them, Cat and Ty realize they could be the next ones to die on Storm Mountain. “A touching story about a daughter who wants to honor her mountaineer father. Will appeal to aspiring young climbers who want a taste of the big peaks. Tom Birdseye has more than thirty years of mountaineering experience, and it shows in this page-turning work.” —Climbing The Eye of the Stone: While walking through the woods on his thirteenth birthday, Jackson Cooper takes shelter in a cave to avoid a storm. When he pulls a peculiar stone from the wall, he is suddenly transported to another world. The inhabitants of this strange new place called Timmra believe that Jackson is the chosen one, a promised gift from their god to protect them, and now he must find the courage to fight an evil monster. “The story provides plenty of excitement for adventure fans. . . . [A] fast-paced fantasy.” —Booklist I’m Going to Be Famous: Arlo Moore’s favorite book of all time is The Guinness Book of World Records, and now he is determined to break the world record for eating his favorite food—bananas. He only needs to consume seventeen in less than two minutes. Should be easy, right? Except that when everyone starts betting on Arlo’s chances of beating the record, his principal forbids him from training at school. But nothing’s going to stop Arlo from his moment of fame—even if everyone thinks he’s bananas. “[A] fast-paced, furiously funny story.” —Booklist

Book Get Poor Now Avoid the Rush

Download or read book Get Poor Now Avoid the Rush written by Seedy Buckberry and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-12-27 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's hard to say, exactly, what's meant by the modern world, but Henry Buckberry never really hooked into it. Born before the First World War and the oldest boy in a family of thirteen kids, he left the open, rolling, potholed prairie of North Dakota in 1921 for the dark, dense, dangerous woods of northern Wisconsin, where he learned to fish, trap, hunt, lumberjack, and farm. Although he lived into the twenty-first century (the second volume of these stories, A Windfall Homestead, will inch us closer to the information super-highway), it could be said that Henry played hooky from the twentieth. With a few allowances for a little new technology, like the Model T, Henry's life represents the end phase of a rural folk culture that has its roots in the Neolithic. Through Henry's stories it's possible to see a long way into the past and then to turn the telescope around in order to put the present under an improvised microscope. Henry didn't have an easy life, but he had a vivid life, a life amazingly free of boredom, aimlessness, or distraction, and his stories convey that vividness from beginning to end. Henry's son Charles Darwin Buckberry--also known as C.D. or Seedy Buckberry--interviewed Henry and arranged the stories in some sort of more or less working order. (Seedy insists he put those stories down with complete fidelity, although he refuses to take a lie-detector test or submit to a Minnesota Multi-Phasic Personality Inventory analysis.) Henry's life, as conveyed here, is also a way to measure the intellectual bulimia (or is it the intellectual anorexia?) of present-day empire consumerism. Here is life before Wal-Mart. Here is life that lives in nature with intense and even fierce physicality. Here is life that sings.

This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Percussion instruments such as drums, cymbals, gongs, and xylophones comprise one of the largest and ever-expanding areas of music performance, composition, and sound effects. Profusely illustrated, A Dictionary for the Modern Percussionist and Drummer is an essential resource for any student, professional, or amateur musician who wants to delve into the vast world of percussion and drumming instruments and terminology. With an emphasis on modern terms in many languages and genres, James A. Strain has defined, detailed, and explained the use of percussion instruments and drums not only for classical genres (such as orchestra, symphonic, band, and opera) but also for popular styles (such as jazz, rock, music theater, and marching band). Also included are those world music instruments and ensembles commonly found in public school and university settings (such as steel drum bands, samba bands, and gamelan ensembles) as well as historical genres related to rope and rudimental drumming. Written for professional and amateur percussionists as well as non-percussionist educators, this book includes valuable topics on instrument construction and tuning and specific playing techniques, as well as instrument setup diagrams with models and ranges of keyboard percussion instruments. With more than 300 images and examples, it is the ideal reference book to enable any musician to better understand the extensive world of percussion and drumming.
