Book excerpt: A comprehensive collection of soldiers' songs, marching melodies, rude rhymes and popular parodies, composed, collected and arranged on active service with the BEF. This collection of soldiers' songs was collected and arranged while on active service during the First World War and first published in October 1917. The songs bristle with camaraderie, irreverence and poignancy. The social history and cultural significance of the book was fully realised in the hands of Charles Chilton in 1961 in his groundbreaking BBC Radio 4 documentary 'The long, long trail' which told the story of the First World War through soldiers' songs; they are vital sources which allow us to glimpse how those who endured lived, fought and remembered their wartime years.

Book excerpt: The First World War has left an almost indelible mark on history, with battles such as the Somme and Passchendaele becoming watchwords for suffering unsurpassed. The dreadful fighting on the Western Front, and elsewhere in the world, remains vivid in the public imagination. Over the years dozens of books have been published dealing with the soldier's experience, the military history and the weapons and vehicles of the war, but there has been little devoted to the objects associated with those hard years in the trenches. This book (new in paperback) redresses that balance. With hundreds of carefully captioned photographs of items that would have been part of the everyday life for the British Tommy; from recruiting posters, uniforms and entrenching equipment to games, postcards and pieces of 'trench art', this book brings to life the experience of the Great War soldier through the objects with which he would have been surrounded.

Book Landscapes and Voices of the Great War

Download or read book Landscapes and Voices of the Great War written by Angela K. Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-02-03 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume aims to provide a wider view of First World War experience through focusing on landscapes less commonly considered in historiography, and on voices that have remained on the margins of popular understanding of the war. The landscape of the western front was captured during the conflict in many different ways: in photographs, paintings and print. The most commonly replicated voicing of contemporary attitudes towards the war is that of initial enthusiasm giving way to disillusionment and a sense of overwhelming futility. Investigations of the many components of war experience drawn from social and cultural history have looked to landscapes and voices beyond the frontline as a means of foregrounding different perspectives on the war. Not all of the voices presented here opposed the war, and not all of the landscapes were comprised of trenches or flanked by barbed wire. Collectively, they combine to offer further fresh insights into the multiplicity of war experience, an alternate space to the familiar tropes of mud and mayhem.
