Book Tommy s Story The Life Experience of a Salford Man A British Soldier of World War Two

Download or read book Tommy s Story The Life Experience of a Salford Man A British Soldier of World War Two written by A J Denny and published by New Generation Publishing. This book was released on 2017-07-02 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tommy's story begins in an impoverished Salford of a bygone time. It follows Tommy through his childhood and youth. This leads into the main part of the story about Tommy's experiences as a British soldier seeing combat in the Libyan Desert with the British 7th Armoured Division, which leads to capture and life as a prisoner of war and eventual escape and spectacular journey to reach freedom. The story has twists and turns that will keep the reader not knowing how it will finish until the end. It contains shocking first-hand accounts of war and the harshness of living in a war environment, but also moments of hope and endeavour, and the laughter of life and romance in the most bizarre of situations. The story travels between continents and countries, highlighting the importance of how a grasp of different languages can remove cultural barriers and, in Tommy's story, probably saved his life.

Book excerpt: Tommy Atkins is the English soldier, who joking broke the cavalry of France at Minden, who singing marched with the Great Duke to the Danube, who grumbling shattered Napoleon's dreams at Waterloo, who sweating in his red coat tramped back and forth across Indis, who kept his six-rounds-to-the-minute at Mons, and who died in the mud at Passchendaele, the sands of the Western Desert, and the jungles of Burma. If his name has been eclipsed by his more illustrious commanders - Cromwell, Marlborough, Moore, Wolfe, Wellington, Allenby, Slim - they at least will accord him his rightful place beside them. They knew his worth. Tommy Atkins is his story - the story of this most versatile, most adaptable, most un-military soldier.

Book Behind Enemy Lines

Book excerpt: With three Military Crosses, three Croix de guerre, a Légion d'honneur and a papal knighthood for his heroics during the Second World War, Sir Tommy Macpherson is the most decorated living soldier of the British Army. Yet for 65 years the Highlander's story has remained untold. Few know how, aged 21, he persuaded 23,000 SS soldiers of the feared Das Reich tank column to surrender, or how Tommy almost single-handedly stopped Tito's Yugoslavia annexing the whole of north-east Italy. Twice captured, he escaped both times, marching through hundreds of miles of German-held territory to get home. Still a schoolboy when war broke out, Tommy quickly matured into a legendary commando, and his remarkable story features a dizzyingly diverse cast of characters, including Winston Churchill, Field Marshal Montgomery and Charles de Gaulle.

Book Tommy

  • Author : William T. White
  • Publisher : AuthorHouse
  • Release : 2006-09-21
  • ISBN : 1452040494
  • Pages : 274 pages

Download or read book Tommy written by William T. White and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2006-09-21 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This autobiography is about a member of the "greatest generation," a life that began during the First World War and experienced the Great Depression, World War II and the half century since. It is not strictly a chronology, but a telling of events selected for their interest and meaning. In the first of four parts, author William T. White, “Tommy,” describes 18 years of pre-World War II life in an Arizona mining town, complete with its substantial race prejudice against Mexicans and even those non-Mexicans who lived where Mexicans lived. Tommy tells of an even more powerful prejudice, variously religious and pseudo- scientific, directed against him and his family because of his sister’s epilepsy. Part II describes the author’s experiences in World War II, first as a B-17 navigator flying from England and North Africa, and then serving in the Pacific as a radar-bombardier for the B-29 attacks on Japan. Part III covers twenty-years service as a regular Air Force officer, including three action packed years as a military attaché in Communist Yugoslavia during the cold war. Part IV describes a post-military academic career that, from many points of view, contained events that are as interesting or even more so than those in military life. Most of the chapters in the book are preceded by a brief small-print note that is a brief quotation or personal comment usually relating to an event described in the chapter. Taken together, these notes constitute a theme, both for the book and for the author’s working life. That theme is essentially that good and effective human organizations are those that are based fully on truth and sublimated to the combined best interests of those who own them, work in them and/or are served by them.

Book Journey to War

Download or read book Journey to War written by William S. Murray and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-11-14 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World War II has left an indelible mark on the fabric of human history. The exploits of men like Hitler and Mussolini, Roosevelt and Churchill are chronicled in countless books and movies. Their names and their actions will never be forgottenand for good reason. To gain a deeper understanding of the wars impact, however, we must look beyond the names that grace the pages of textbooks and recognize the sacrifices of the anonymous soldiers who risked life and limb to serve the country they loved. With each passing year, their storieswhich persist only through the oral history passed from generation to generationfade into the ether of time. As a boy, author William S. Murray listened to his grandfathers stories about training as a pilot during World War II with rapt attention. In an effort to preserve these memories, Murray sat down with his grandfather, Thomas Stewart, to record these stories for posterity. Stewart shares memories both happy and bittersweet, from his beginnings in Byhalia, Mississippi, through his experiences as a pilot during the war years. Journey to War is not the story of familiar heroes like Eisenhower, Patton, and MacArthur. This is the story of one ordinary man doing his part to serve his country during extraordinary times. This is the story of Second Lieutenant Thomas Stewart and the men with whom he served.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1941, Sgt Albert Victor Ient sought adventure and travel in the Services. Stationed in Hong Kong, he faced a different reality when his position was overrun. A generation later, his son Vic Ient set out to discover exactly what his father went through as a POW on the island of Innoshima. This is the story of how World War II affected everyday people. Beneath the politics, military tactics and diplomacy, there were the ordinary, hard-suffering servicemen. The author uncovers details of not only Sgt Ient’s capture and imprisonment, but also of the experiences of seven others who lived to share their personal accounts. Ient explores armed conflict, ghastly prison transport and 3 years of suffering, through personal testimony, maps, photographs and telegrams, all in the context of the Far East theatre. With great strength, and even humour, these eight men’s accounts reveal what POW life was really like. Including a foreword from WWII historian Dr Tony Banham, These Valiant Men is both personal and factual – a must read for anyone with an interest in World War II. “A worthy and necessary addition to the library of works on the Second World War in the Far East.” – Reader Review

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Never heard before real stories of soldiers who fought in WW2 'Extraordinary ...If they had not made our war their war also, victory might not have come in 1945' DAILY TELEGRAPH In this powerful and moving narrative, Christopher Somerville skilfully links personal testimonies to present an epic which embraces comedy and tragedy, pride and degradation, close comradeship and stark racial prejudice, devotion to the benign Mother Country and a burning desire to see the back of her. Many of the veterans had never previously talked of their experiences, even to close loved ones. They cover such topics as attitudes to Britain before and after the war, why Commonwealth citizens offered to fight, and how some volunteers were inspired by their wartime service while others were thoroughly disillusioned. The result is a rare and faithful memoir to the five million Commonwealth citizens who fought for the Allies and the 170,000 who died or went missing.

Book It s a Long Way to Tooting Broadway

Download or read book It s a Long Way to Tooting Broadway written by Reginald Cambridge and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Join Reginald (Reg) Cambridge at the beginning of his World War 2 journey in the early 1940s as he enlists as an Infantryman at the age of 17. Often humorous, sometimes tragic, but always honest, this easy-to-read autobiography shares the author's real life experiences during the devastation and chaos of war. By the age of 19 he was fighting in some of the most intense battles of WW2, including the North African and Italian campaigns. His simple ambition and motivation was shared by his fellow comrades - to survive! Although a traumatic period of history, humour and inspiration were always to be found, and this is the focus of many of the stories shared by Reg in this memoir. The author also explores the rigidity and intolerance of the military, which created in him a sense of injustice and frustration, resulting in a 'chip on his shoulder' that Reg carried for many years. Although briefly leaving the military on two occasions, he soon returned and spent the majority of his service in the Intelligence Corps in Europe and the Far East. This intriguing and captivating read invites you into Reg's world, sharing his joyful times as well as his sorrow, his thoughts and his stories of wonderful family, friends, pets and places, including the week he and a colleague went AWOL in Sicily during wartime in order to explore the island! The three-legged pig! Being hit in the arse by shrapnel! Being court-martialled! Having his jaw broken! Recollections of the comradery with fellow soldiers and those of a more intimate and emotional nature with women are also shared. Reg Cambridge retired on 1971. Approximately 60 years after his wartime experiences, he reunited again with his 'old pals'. Now in his nineties, he is excited to make his story available to everyone. This autobiography will be of interest to members of the military, WW2 Veterans, Military Social Historians, fans of biographies, friends and families of those who fought in the North African and Italian campaigns - and anyone who enjoys reading about the lives and experiences of others.

His next assignment was Operation Varsity, on the 24th March, 1945, when 6th Airborne Division, along with the 17th American Airborne Division, made their airborne assault over the River Rhine, in West Germany. He was wounded, and became a P O W, in a German Hospital, until freed by his advancing comrades. In particular, it focuses on a four-year-old boy who had the misfortune to contract tuberculosis in his hip joint, which caused him to be admitted to a hospital that was run by nursing staff that had very little sympathy for the children in their charge. The subsequent marriage of his widowed mother to a British soldier had a considerable impact on the quality of his life.
