Book Holy Week in Tom

Download or read book Holy Week in Tom written by and published by Sunstone Press. This book was released on 1976 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like so many folk customs the Tom (New Mexico) Passion Play was passed along orally from generation to generation for nearly two hundred years. The same drama that Fray Francisco Domingues mentioned in 1776 was still being performed in 1947 when it was filmed by a local resident. It was at this time that Fred Landavazo, Edwin Berry and Juan Estevan Zamora realized that the drama, already threatened by a modern, disinterested world, should be preserved in a more permanent form. Through their efforts a script was produced before the final performance of the play in 1955. For the first time, this important religious and historical folk document is available in its original from with translations and annotation by Fr. Thomas Steele. Thomas J. Steele, S.J., a Jesuit priest, is a teacher and authority on the religious folk art of New Mexico.

Book excerpt: By the author of The Painted Bird and Being There: the story of a roving polo player who seeks fulfillment through transgression: “his best novel yet” (The Harvard Crimson). William Kennedy wrote in The Washington Post that “the Kosinski hero is unique in literature, as recognizable as the Hemingway hero used to be.” In Passion Play, Kosinski conjures Fabian, perhaps the most romantic, violent, and lust-driven hero of them all. A modern knight-errant of his own moral code, Fabian roams America in his custom-built VanHome, his refuge, transport, and stable for his two horses. His livelihood is polo—not the millionaire’s team sport, but the life-threatening duel of clashing horsemen. The prize is more than money and honor; it is the awareness of having drawn upon every resource of body and mind, of man and horse in danger. Passion Play is a masterpiece of violence and seduction, love and loss, by one of the world’s greatest writers.

Book The Greatest Love Story Ever Told

Download or read book The Greatest Love Story Ever Told written by Megan Mullally and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2018-10-02 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *A New York Times Bestseller* Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman reveal the full story behind their epic romance—presented in a series of intimate conversations between the couple, including photos, anecdotes, and the occasional puzzle. The year: 2000. The setting: Los Angeles. A gorgeous virtuoso of an actress agreed to star in a random play, and a basement-dwelling scenic carpenter said he would assay a supporting role in the selfsame pageant. At the first rehearsal she surveyed her fellow cast members, determining if any of the men might qualify to provide her with a satisfying fling. Her gaze fell upon the carpenter, and like a bolt of lightning the thought struck her: no dice. Moving on. Yet, unbeknownst to our protagonists, Cupid had merely set down his bow and picked up a rocket launcher...that fired a love rocket (not a euphemism). The players were Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman, and the resulting romance, once ignited, was...epic. Beyond epic. It resulted in a coupling that has endured to this day; a sizzling, perpetual tryst that has captivated the world with its kindness, athleticism, astonishingly low-brow humor, and true (fire emoji) passion. How did they do it? They came from completely different families, ignored a significant age difference, and were separated by the gulf of several social strata. Megan loved books and art history; Nick loved hammers. But much more than these seemingly unsurpassable obstacles were the values they held in common: respect, decency, the ability to mention genitalia in almost any context, and an abiding obsession with the songs of Tom Waits. Eighteen years later, they're still very much in love and have finally decided to reveal the philosophical mountains they have conquered, the lessons they've learned, and the myriad jigsaw puzzles they've completed. Presented as an oral history in a series of conversations between the couple, the book features anecdotes, hijinks, photos, and a veritable grab bag of tomfoolery. This is not only the intoxicating book that Mullally's and Offerman's fans have been waiting for, it might just hold the solution to the greatest threat facing our modern world: the single life.

Book Play Time

    Book Details:
  • Author : Malcolm Turvey
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2019-12-03
  • ISBN : 0231550111
  • Pages : 488 pages

Download or read book Play Time written by Malcolm Turvey and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2019-12-03 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacques Tati is widely regarded as one of the greatest postwar European filmmakers. He made innovative and challenging comedies while achieving international box office success and attaining a devoted following. In Play Time, Malcolm Turvey examines Tati’s unique comedic style and evaluates its significance for the history of film and modernism. Turvey argues that Tati captured elite and general audiences alike by combining a modernist aesthetic with slapstick routines, gag structures, and other established traditions of mainstream film comedy. Considering films such as Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday (1953), Mon Oncle (1958), Play Time (1967), and Trafic (1971), Turvey shows how Tati drew on the rich legacy of comic silent film while modernizing its conventions in order to encourage his viewers to adopt a playful attitude toward the modern world. Turvey also analyzes Tati’s sardonic view of the bourgeoisie and his complex and multifaceted satire of modern life. Tati's singular and enduring achievement, Turvey concludes, was to translate the democratic ideals of the postwar avant-garde into mainstream film comedy, crafting a genuinely popular modernism. Richly illustrated with images from the director’s films, Play Time offers an illuminating and original understanding of Tati’s work.
