But Tom Swift begins to wonder if the uncanny wanderer is behind a series of strange incidents - a phony ghost that seems to come to life before Tom's eyes, telephone calls received but never made, violent interference with Tom's space-probing megascope, and even a phantom apparition of the young inventor himself! A manned flyby of the Orb ends in danger and mystery. To pierce the object's veil of secrecy, Tom decides to send a fleet of robot drones, his Video Vikings, on a probe mission, equipped with cameras to relay their findings to Tom's remarkable new invention, the telejector, able to produce startling 3-D images in midair. The Green Orb does not reveal its secrets easily. First Tom and his friend Bud must locate a little girl, key to communicating with the Orb, before she is made to disappear as have a host of ESP-gifted individuals, without explanation. Book Back in the Spaceship Again

Download or read book Back in the Spaceship Again written by Karen Sands-O'Connor and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1999-08-30 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much literature for children appears in the form of series, in which familiar characters appear in book after book. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, authors began to write science fiction series for children. These early series generally had plots that revolved around inventions developed by the protagonist. But it was the development and use of rocket and atomic science during World War II that paved the way for interesting and exciting new themes, conflicts, and plots. While much has been written about the early juvenile science fiction series, particularly the Tom Swift books, comparatively little has been written about children's science fiction series published since 1945. This book provides a broad overview of this previously neglected topic. The volume offers a critical look at the history, themes, characters, settings, and construction of post-1945 juvenile science fiction series, including the A.I. Gang, the Animorphs, Commander Toad, Danny Dunn, Dragonfall Five, the Magic School Bus, and Space Cat. The book begins with an introductory history of juvenile science fiction since 1945, with chapters then devoted to particular topics. Some of these topics include the role of aliens and animals, attitudes toward humor, the absence and presence of science, and the characterization of women. A special feature is an appendix listing the various series. In addition, the volume provides extensive bibliographical information.

Book Oppositions and Paradoxes

Download or read book Oppositions and Paradoxes written by John L. Bell and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2016-04-18 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since antiquity, opposed concepts such as the One and the Many, the Finite and the Infinite, and the Absolute and the Relative, have been a driving force in philosophical, scientific, and mathematical thought. Yet they have also given rise to perplexing problems and conceptual paradoxes which continue to haunt scientists and philosophers. In Oppositions and Paradoxes, John L. Bell explains and investigates the paradoxes and puzzles that arise out of conceptual oppositions in physics and mathematics. In the process, Bell not only motivates abstract conceptual thinking about the paradoxes at issue, but he also offers a compelling introduction to central ideas in such otherwise-difficult topics as non-Euclidean geometry, relativity, and quantum physics. These paradoxes are often as fun as they are flabbergasting. Consider, for example, the famous Tristram Shandy paradox: an immortal man composing an autobiography so slowly as to require a year of writing to describe each day of his life — he would, if he had infinite time, presumably never complete the work, although no individual part of it would remain unwritten. Or think of an office mailbox labelled “mail for those with no mailbox”—if this is a person’s mailbox, how can they possibly have “no mailbox”? These and many other paradoxes straddle the boundary between physics and metaphysics, and demonstrate the hidden difficulty in many of our most basic concepts.

Just two years ago Tom Swift and his best friend, Bud Barclay, journeyed through a wormhole and nearly lost their lives investigating a black hole. After returning Tom sent an unmanned probe back there to keep an eye on things. The time has come to replace it. But, when he does the first videos sent back reveal something so startling that Tom isn't certain what to believe. The probe shows him something Tom knows had to be in the past. What might it mean? The first thought he has is some sort of time fluctuation has occurred. He is hesitant to refer to it as "time travel." But, what if that is exactly what it is? Is it something that can be replicated and used on Earth. Or, can the source of the phenomena be taken from its location back to Earth? Tom can only imagine the possibilities and sets out testing in until a personal tragedy forces him to try something radical.
