Book Dear Psychiatrist

Download or read book Dear Psychiatrist written by Jennie Roberts and published by James Clarke & Co.. This book was released on 1995 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tom was born with Asperger (or Asperger's) Syndrome, a form of Autism that affects both mental and physical development. He changed from a happy, achieving nine-year-old to an uncommunicative adolescent requiring psychiatric treatment after years of bullying by his peers because he was different. A minor shoplifting offence and the resulting court case brought the psychiatrist's report to the attention of Tom's parents. Failing to recognise bullying as a probable cause for Tom's behaviour it blamed instead his parents for "poor understanding of their son's limitations, consequently they have placed unrealistic expectations upon him leading to his deep sense of failure." Very alarmed by this, the parents were further disturbed on being refused a meeting with the psychiatrist to discuss their concerns, a major result of which was the mother's decision to write this book. Written as a series of letters (mainly fictional to highlight the author's frustrations) to Tom's psychiatrist, Dear Psychiatrist is Jennie Robert's perspective on her son's case history; a perspective that details not only the difficulties that Tom suffered through his handicap, but also the extra (and perhaps more disabling) difficulties imposed by the bullying and the unhelpful attitudes encountered from some members of the teaching, medical, psychological and psychiatric professions. This intensely moving mother's account of the childhood and adolescence of her handicapped son is a must read for those working with special needs children and their families, or for parents in the same position as the author. Having first-hand experience, Jennie Roberts recognises that parents should be considered a valuable and indeed, vital source of information when any sort of discussion about their child takes place. In her Foreword, Baroness Warnock's concluding hope is that "The book should be compulsory reading for anyone entering training whether as a teacher, doctor, social worker, psychologist or psychiatrist". It is no less an essential source of support for parents who are having difficulties with the professional help they have received. These sentiments are given poignant endorsement by the tragic circumstance of Tom's suicide in November 1994, his final letter making it clear that his unhappy school experience was a major contributory factor. Book excerpt: …Well dear Jim it breaks my heart to write this letter. Our dear [brother] was killed yesterday morning at 5.30. The bullet killed him instantly and he never spoke a word. I had just left him and gone down the trench to see the other lads when I was called back. Oh Jim it is awful … Oh I do hope he is the last … It is April 27, 1918, Jim’s brother writes from the battlefields of France. Of five brothers serving on the Western Front, three have given their lives; another has been hospitalized. Six agonizing months of brutal warfare were yet to be endured … World War I was a senseless tragedy. Its long shadow darkened the four corners of the world. In Mologa, Victoria, once a bustling community, stands a lonely stone memorial. Etched within the granite are the names of the Marlow brothers and their mates; a testament to ordinary people who became heroes. Anzac Sons is composed from a collection of over 500 letters and postcards written by the brothers who served. From the training grounds of Victoria, Egypt and England, to the Western Front battlefields – Pozieres, Bullecourt, Messines, Menin Road, Passchendaele, Villers-Bretonneux and the battles of 1918 – this compelling true story was compiled by the granddaughter of a surviving brother. She takes us on her journey as she walks in the footsteps of her ancestors. This is a story of mateship, bravery and sacrifice; it is a heartbreaking account of a family torn apart by war. It is a pledge to never forget.

Book excerpt: Balancing new scientific research with his practical horse-training experience, author Andrew McLean debunks long-standing myths about horses and presents a far-reaching, totally humane method of horse training. He starts by recognizing vast differences between equine and human brains and mental processes. He describes the traditional trainerï¿1/2s mistake of judging horses according to the standards of docile or good horse and bad-tempered or mean horse. The horseï¿1/2s brain cannot make abstract judgments about ï¿1/2goodï¿1/2 or ï¿1/2badï¿1/2 behavior, but readily responds to conditioning by trainers who understand the equine brain, the instincts that drive it, and a horseï¿1/2s way of knowing the world. The author emphasizes that by training a horse according to a set of consistent responses that coincide with equine instincts, horse owners can avoid undesirable horse behavior. He offers a training program and amplifies on it with enlightening case studies. Here is must-reading for every current and prospective horse owner and rider. More than 300 color photos.

Book Heysen to Heysen

Download or read book Heysen to Heysen written by Catherine Speck and published by Wakefield Press. This book was released on 2019-03-21 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prominent Australian artist Nora Heysen has been said to have worked in the shadow of her father Hans Heysen, one of Australia's most recognised landscape painters. Letters between the two, however, reveal a different story. In 1934, when Nora first travelled to London to study art, she experienced her first time away from home and the first of many, often exotic places from where she would write home to Hahndorf, South Australia. The correspondence between Nora and Hans continued until his death in 1968. Theirs was a close and affectionate relationship, in which father and daughter shared a lifetime of thoughts about art and life, and a mutual respect and admiration for each other's work. Heysen to Heysen is a showcase of letters between Nora and Hans Heysen from the collection of the National Library of Australia. Accompanied by carefully selected images and text by leading art historian Catherine Speck, the publication lifts the lid on a vista of Australian art.

Book excerpt: One ordinary spring morning in Reykjavik, Iceland, Thordis Elva kisses her son and partner goodbye before boarding a plane to do a remarkable thing: fly seven thousand miles to South Africa to confront the man who raped her when she was just sixteen. Meanwhile, in Sydney, Australia, Tom Stranger nervously embarks on an equally life-changing journey to meet Thordis, wondering whether he is worthy of this milestone. After exchanging hundreds of searingly honest emails over eight years, Thordis and Tom decided it was time to speak face to face. Coming from opposite sides of the globe, they meet in the middle, in Cape Town, South Africa, a country that is no stranger to violence and the healing power of forgiveness. South of Forgiveness is an unprecedented collaboration between a survivor and a perpetrator, each equally committed to exploring the darkest moment of their lives. It is a true story about being bent but not broken, facing fear with courage, and finding hope even in the most wounded of places. Personable, accessible, and compelling, South of Forgiveness is an intense and refreshing look at a gendered violence, rape culture, personal responsibility, and the effect that patriarchal cultures have on both men and women.
