Book Sister Gertrude A Tale of the West Riding

Download or read book Sister Gertrude A Tale of the West Riding written by D. F. E. Sykes and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-05-19 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is the third semi-autobiographical novel by D. F. E. Sykes, a gifted scholar, solicitor, local politician, and newspaper proprietor. Skyes, in this work, draws heavily on his own life experiences like almost all of his novels. He is indeed the Edward Beaumont of the novel. An account of His solicitor's training and early political longings is presented in this work, along with his romance with a Lincolnshire vicar's daughter. However, he remains particular in what he reveals about himself and uses an incredible writing style to make the book more appealing. He gives the readers an insight into his thoughts, beliefs, desires, and the hardships he must have survived before turning his life around. This work proves to be helpful in providing a beneficial message on how a talented man can be destroyed for his beliefs and his battle, with support, to retrieve his self-esteem.

Book Ben o Bill s the Luddite A Yorkshire Tale

Download or read book Ben o Bill s the Luddite A Yorkshire Tale written by D. F. E. Sykes and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-05-19 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1898, this fiction deals with surprisingly contemporary issues of the period and is the social history of the time it stands out. What makes this work different from the existing literature of that period is the use of the local dialect and the expertise with which the characters and their lives have been portrayed at a period of such unrest in the Colne Valley. The Luddites were not unreasonable machine destroyers but desperate men, suffering in destitution, sorrow, and despair, fighting for a voice to be heard against cruel mill owners and a crooked government. The authors of this work were transparent in their compassion for the cause of these workers and the background and reasoning behind these events The book was originally credited to D. F. E. Sykes and G. H. Walker, G. H., but Walker's name.

Book Miriam A Tale of Pole Moor and the Greenfield Hills

Download or read book Miriam A Tale of Pole Moor and the Greenfield Hills written by D. F. E. Sykes and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-05-20 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fiction presents a thrilling murder mystery connecting the lead characters to The Burn Platts, an area above Slaithwaite near Pole Moor where some Romanies lived around the time of an incident that occurred in 1832, at the Moorcock Inn, on the border of the bleak moorland above Greenfield near Saddleworth. At this isolated pub, the landlord and his gamekeeper son were brutally murdered. This quest to find the murders is worth reading. The gripping plot, memorable characters, and unique writing style make this work enjoyable. This work includes significant portions of the dialect used at that time in the region when Greenfield was a part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. The local Saddleworth author, D. F. E. Sykes, has tried to reproduce this phonetically using the traditional alphabet. This work is a must-read for anyone curious about this dialect and, of course, all the murder mystery lovers.

Book Miriam A Tale of Pole Hill and the Greenfield Hills

Download or read book Miriam A Tale of Pole Hill and the Greenfield Hills written by Daniel Frederick Edward Sykes and published by anboco. This book was released on 2017-06-23 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MIRIAM: A Tale of Pole Moor and the Greenfield Hills links the protagonists to The Burn Platts, an area above Slaithwaite near Pole Moor where a group of Romanys or Gypsies lived around the time of an incident which took place, in 1832, at the Moorcock Inn, on the edge of the bleak moorland above Greenfield near Saddleworth. It was at this remote pub that the landlord and his gamekeeper son were violently murdered. The Burnplatters were described by MR. G. S. Philips in 1848 as a group of savages "living in log huts thatched with sods, and paying neither rent nor taxes. They were a community to themselves, and had their own wild laws and government. They were the terror likewise of all wayfarers, and it was dangerous for any man to go amongst them alone." It includes substantial portions of dialect spoken at that time in the area when Greenfield was still part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. The author has attempted to reproduce this phonetically using the conventional alphabet. He is not always consistent in the way the dialect is transcribed though this in itself illustrates the nature of dialect.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In all of Sykes' novels he draws heavily on his own life experiences though none more so than in this, his third, semi-autobiographical novel. The Edward Beaumont of the novel is indeed Sykes; his solicitors practice and early political aspirations are featured along with his romance of the daughter of a Lincolnshire vicar. From newspaper articles we can also confirm that he was a councillor and a potential parliamentary candidate for the West Staffordshire constituency; his embroilment with the weavers dispute, bankruptcy and his dependency on alcohol are also well documented. He is however selective in what he chooses to reveal about himself and uses artistic licence to make the book more readable. He does give us an insight into his ideas, opinions and aspirations and the turmoil he must have endured before turning his life around. It is a salutary lesson in how a talented man can be destroyed for his convictions and his struggle, with support, to regain his self-respect.
