Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the world’s population lives in cities in developing countries, where access to basic public services, such as water, electricity, and health clinics, is either inadequate or sorely missing. Water and Politics shows how politicians benefit politically from manipulating public service provision for electoral gain. In many young democracies, politicians exchange water service for votes or political support, rewarding allies or punishing political enemies. Surprisingly, the political problem of water provision has become more pronounced, as water service represents a valuable political currency in resource-scarce environments. Water and Politics finds that middle-class and industrial elites play an important role in generating pressure for public service reforms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Testaments written in their own language, Nahuatl, have been crucial for reconstructing the everyday life of the indigenous people of central Mexico after Spanish contact. Those published to date have largely been from the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Testaments of Toluca presents a large body of Nahuatl wills (98) from 1652 to 1783 from an important valley not much studied, thus greatly enlarging our perspective on the evolution of indigenous society and culture in central Mexico. Each testament is transcribed, translated, and accompanied by a commentary on the testator's situation and on interesting terminology. A substantial introductory study fully analyzes the testamentary genre as seen in this corpus (a first) and summarizes the content of the documents in realms such as gender, kinship, household, and land. Wills are very human documents, and the apparatus draws out this aspect, telling us much of local indigenous life in central Mexico in the third century after Spanish contact, so that the book is of potential interest to a broad spectrum of readers.

The Handbook has provided scholars interested in Latin America with a bibliographical source of a quality unavailable to scholars in most other branches of area studies." —Latin American Research Review Beginning with volume 41 (1979), the University of Texas Press became the publisher of the Handbook of Latin American Studies, the most comprehensive annual bibliography in the field. Compiled by the Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress and annotated by a corps of more than 130 specialists in various disciplines, the Handbook alternates from year to year between social sciences and humanities. The Handbook annotates works on Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and the Guianas, Spanish South America, and Brazil, as well as materials covering Latin America as a whole. Most of the subsections are preceded by introductory essays that serve as biannual evaluations of the literature and research under way in specialized areas. The Handbook of Latin American Studies is the oldest continuing reference work in the field. Lawrence Boudon, of the Library of Congress Hispanic Division, has been the editor since 2001, and Katherine D. McCann has been assistant editor since 2000. Book Plant Derived Anticancer Drugs in the OMICS Era

Download or read book Plant Derived Anticancer Drugs in the OMICS Era written by Deepu Pandita and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-10-27 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current anti-cancer synthetic medicines are deemed inefficient and unsafe, state the editors of this new book. Plant-based lead molecules, however, such as taxol, camptothecin, podophyllotoxins, vinblastine, vincristine, homoharringtonine, and numerous other anticancer compounds from nature’s arsenal, are potentially safe and can be powerful alternatives that effectively fight against cancer. The volume looks at a variety of medicinal plants and approaches that have shown beneficial results against cancer. Topics in the book include Unani approaches of anticancer plants, genetic engineering and CRISPR/CAS-mediated editing to enhance a plant’s anticancer potential, computational approaches used in anticancer plants, and more. The volume also examines the metabolomics of plants that give them anti-cancer properties.
