Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With his penchant for nature, science, writing and photography, the desert ecologist, Dr Joh R Henschel, could not help but document the conversations about the natural world with his friend Zophosis Moralesi, a Toktokkie as beetly as can be. The Toktok Talkie articles were first published as weekly newspaper columns between 2011 and 2013, and these are now collated in this book. In it, Joh reveals some of his musings about nature and his observations of peoples' relationships to it. He deftly interweaves the human defiance of nature, symbolised by the Ancient Mariner, with nature's many values and ultimate power of having the last word, presented by a humble messenger, the Toktokkie beetle, Zophosis moralesi. His first experience of the Namib in 1977 became love at first sight. Since then he has been conducting research in the Namib and several deserts world-wide, reported in numerous scientific papers and technical documents. After spending over three decades in Namibia, Joh and his wife, Theresa, moved to Kimberley in South Africa in 2013, where he joined the National Research Foundation to continue arid land research through the South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON).

Book How Stella Learned to Talk

Download or read book How Stella Learned to Talk written by Christina Hunger and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER An incredible, revolutionary true story and surprisingly simple guide to teaching your dog to talk from speech-language pathologist Christina Hunger, who has taught her dog, Stella, to communicate using simple paw-sized buttons associated with different words. When speech-language pathologist Christina Hunger first came home with her puppy, Stella, it didn’t take long for her to start drawing connections between her job and her new pet. During the day, she worked with toddlers with significant delays in language development and used Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices to help them communicate. At night, she wondered: If dogs can understand words we say to them, shouldn’t they be able to say words to us? Can dogs use AAC to communicate with humans? Christina decided to put her theory to the test with Stella and started using a paw-sized button programmed with her voice to say the word “outside” when clicked, whenever she took Stella out of the house. A few years later, Stella now has a bank of more than thirty word buttons, and uses them daily either individually or together to create near-complete sentences. How Stella Learned to Talk is part memoir and part how-to guide. It chronicles the journey Christina and Stella have taken together, from the day they met, to the day Stella “spoke” her first word, and the other breakthroughs they’ve had since. It also reveals the techniques Christina used to teach Stella, broken down into simple stages and actionable steps any dog owner can use to start communicating with their pets. Filled with conversations that Stella and Christina have had, as well as the attention to developmental detail that only a speech-language pathologist could know, How Stella Learned to Talk will be the indispensable dog book for the new decade.

In 2006, digital video moved beyond personal use when Great Britain installed nearly 4.2 million surveillance cameras to keep an eye on the activities of its citizens. The digital video files produced by these cameras can store information to be compared with other digital images like passport pictures and drivers' license photographs, leading to fears about how these images are used. Through engaging text, Digital Video, Revised Edition describes the digital tools used to create video images, the various types of digital video, and the future of digital video.

Book excerpt: From Philip K. Dick Award finalist Elwin Cotman, an irresistibly unnerving collection of stories that explore the anxieties of living while Black—a high-wire act of literary-fantastical hybrid fiction. A rural town finds itself under the authoritarian sway of a tree that punishes children. A pair of old friends navigate their fraught history as strange happenings escalate in a Mexican restaurant. A pair of narcissistic friends wreak havoc on an activist community. An aloof young man finds himself living through his lover’s memories. And a day of LARPing takes a cosmic turn. In each of the seven stories in this collection, characters pursue their obsessions on paths to glory and destruction while around them their worlds twist and warp, oscillating between reality and impossibility. On display throughout is Cotman’s ability to reveal truths about the human experience—about friendship, love, betrayal, bitterness—through whimsy, horror, and fantasy. Elegiac in tone, imaginative and humorous in their execution, the character-driven stories in Weird Black Girls challenge, incite, and entertain.

Book Ventriloquism Performance and Contemporary Art

Download or read book Ventriloquism Performance and Contemporary Art written by Jennie Hirsh and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ventriloquism, Performance, and Contemporary Art volume calls attention to the unexpected prevalence of ventriloqual motifs and strategies within contemporary art. Engaging with issues of voice, embodiment, power, and projection, the case studies assembled in this volume span a range of media from painting, sculpture, and photography to installation, performance, architecture, and video. Importantly, they both examine and enact ventriloqual practices, and do so as a means of interrogating and performatively bearing out contemporary conceptions of authorship, subjectivity, and performance. Put otherwise, the chapters in this book oscillate seamlessly between art history, theory, and criticism through both analytical and performative means. Across twelve essays on ventriloquism in contemporary art, the authors, who are curators, historians, and artists, shine light on this outdated practice, repositioning it as a conspicuous and meaningful trend within a range of artistic practices today. This book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, contemporary art, media studies, performance, museum/curatorial studies, and theater.

Book A Fortified Far Right

Download or read book A Fortified Far Right written by Katalin Petho-Kiss and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Petho-Kiss and Gunaratna understand the nature of the threat posed by the far right because of their findings and they propose effective provisions and mechanisms for detecting and countering it. The book undertakes a consistent procession and empirical examination of available information to arrive at the recognition that in order to dissolve the complexity of the associated threat, we need to scrutinize the functioning of far-right threat groups. In-depth and consistent analysis on their mode of operation and mindset enables us to identify ways to detect and counter their malicious efforts and activities. The theoretical framework for the analysis lies upon the concept of wave theory. The main question that this book examines is whether far-right terrorism constitutes a new wave of global terrorism. One question emerges from this statement that requires further elaboration. Is far-right terrorism a novel wave of terrorism? If yes, how is it novel and what are the novelties or developments in it? This book is for scholars as well as practitioners in the counter-terrorism (CT) and the prevention/countering violent extremism (PCVE) field. Through specific case studies students studying CT and/or PCVE could gain insight into the operational functionalities of far-right threat groups. This may help them to get a more accurate understanding of the threat posed by these entities. Examining the recruitment, funding, communication practices, and modus operandi of worrisome threat actors equips us to design the most effective countermeasures and identify the hiatuses in applicable legislative regimes.
