Download or read book The Lissome Gay But Mostly Mr Fox written by Vernon Moyse and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of an encounter between a young and introverted gay man, Paul, and his Nemesis, a frail old soldier locked in reminiscences about his days in the British Army of India, Mr Fox. The story is narrated by Paul now aged 72 and begins gloomily, but lightens into a humorous reaction to the follies of British Indian occupation. Paul and Mr Fox meet in an NHS hospital in London, the young man afflicted by Tropical Sprue and the old soldier dying of bowel cancer. The young man is a closet gay and troubled by things of the flesh, by appearances, by missed opportunities and by adolescent certainties and yet doubts. Mr Fox is an extrovert who shares his outrageous preferences and undoubted racism with all and sundry. As a farrier sergeant he was undoubtedly expert for he was attached to General Dunsterville's troops of 'moral camouflage", the precursor of the SAS. Paul gradually becomes very much aware of his own empirical racism and British Empire mentality - which he finally embraces in the style of Mr Fox.

Download or read book The History of Sweets written by Paul Chrystal and published by Pen and Sword History. This book was released on 2021-06-30 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A chronicle of confectionaries throughout the centuries—from honeycombs to Haribo. “There is much to get your teeth into within these pages.” —Best of British Magazine We all remember sweets—objects of pure delight and the endless cause of squabbles, fights even, hoarding and swapping; a chance to gorge, suck, crunch, and chew. But they’re by no means just a nostalgic thing of days past, and it’s not only children who love and devour sweets—gobstoppers, bulls eyes, licorice, seaside rock, bubble gum, and the like; grown-ups of all ages are partial to a good humbug, or a lemon sherbet or two—in the car, (annoyingly) at the cinema or while out walking—wherever and whenever, the sweet is there, the sweet delivers and the sweet rarely disappoints. Sweets then are ubiquitous and enduring; they cross age, culture, and gender boundaries and they have been around, it seems, forever. This book tells the story of sweets from their primitive beginnings to their place today as a billion-pound commodity with its sophisticated, seductive packaging and sales, advertising and marketing. It explores the people’s favorites, past and present; but there is also a dark side to sweets—and this book does not shy away from the deleterious effect on health as manifested in obesity, tooth decay, and diabetes. It delves into sweet and candy shops in supermarkets and markets, retro sweet shops, fudge makers, vintage sweets online, sweet manufacturing, chocolate, the grey line between sweets and “medicines” ancient and modern. It goes round the world unwrapping sweets from different countries and cultures and it examines how immigrants from all nations have changed our own sweet world.
Download or read book History of Chocolate in York written by Paul Chrystal and published by Grub Street Publishers. This book was released on 2012-08-24 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A deliciously illustrated historical tour of England’s “chocolate city.” In the nineteenth century, York was renowned for confectionery—particularly chocolate. Treats like Kit Kat, Fruit Gums, All Gold, and Butterkist were made by York companies Rowntree’s, Terry’s, and M.A. Craven and Son. This new book is the first to chart the history of chocolate and confectionery manufacture and marketing by York companies, from their origins in the eighteenth century through to recent takeovers by Nestle, Tangerine, and Kraft. Revolutionary new products such as Easter eggs in the 1870s and chocolate assortments in the 1890s are covered—along with such crucial turn-of-the-century developments as milk chocolate and the chocolate bar. The significance to the industry of the Quaker movement is discussed, along with an examination of the impact of the world wars and the intervening depression. Fully illustrated throughout, this book provides both an enlightening view of the chocolate industry—from production, quality control, distribution, and marketing to packaging, design, and branding—as well a tasty morsel of British history.
