Download or read book Purpose Beyond 2012 written by Wj Reichertz and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-05-22 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like many Americans, Ricky Vogt was searching for a career and purpose during the fallout from America's 2008 economic implosion. At the same time the nation was searching to resolve energy, environmental, and economic problems within a dysfunctional political system. This story explains how Vogt joined his fellow Americans as they fought amongst themselves in search of a better vision. He questions how community resolves the tension between intolerance and personal liberty; between the selfishness of trickle-down economics and the ideals of spirituality and our founding documents promoting the common good. The book depicts Vogt's evolving search for better solutions and a new way forward.

Book The Execution of Admiral John Byng as a Microhistory of Eighteenth Century Britain

Download or read book The Execution of Admiral John Byng as a Microhistory of Eighteenth Century Britain written by Joseph J. Krulder and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-04-26 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to Voltaire's Candide, Admiral John Byng's 1757 execution went forward to 'encourage the others'. Of course, the story is more complicated. This microhistorical account upon a macro-event presents an updated, revisionist, and detailed account of a dark chapter in British naval history. Asking 'what was Britain like the moment Byng returned to Portsmouth after the Battle of Minorca (1756)?' not only returns a glimpse of mid-eighteenth century Britain but provides a deeper understanding of how a wartime admiral, the son of a peer, of some wealth, a once colonial governor, and sitting member of parliament came to be scapegoated and then executed for the failings of others. This manuscript presents a cultural, social, and political dive into Britain at the beginning of the Seven Years' War. Part 1 focuses on ballad, newspaper, and prize culture. Part 2 makes a turn towards the social where religion, morality, rioting, and disease play into the Byng saga. Admiral Byng's record during the 1755 Channel Campaign is explored, as is the Mediterranean context of the Seven Years' War, troubles elsewhere in the empire, and then the politics behind Byng's trial and execution.

Book Creating Built Environments

Download or read book Creating Built Environments written by Roderick J. Lawrence and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-06-14 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Built environments are complex, emergent, systemic, and require contextual analysis. They should be understood before reconsidering how professionals and researchers of the built environment are educated and trained to reduce the gap between knowledge, practice and real-world circumstances. There is an urgent need to rethink the role of policy makers, researchers, practitioners and laypeople in the construction, renovation and reuse of the built environment in order to deal with numerous environmental/ecological, economic/financial and social/ethical challenges of providing a habitat for current and future generations in a world of continual change. These challenges are too complex to be dealt with only by one discipline or profession. Combinations of different types of knowledge, knowing in praxis and tacit knowledge are needed. This book presents and illustrates recent innovative contributions with case studies focusing on five strategic domains and the interrelations between them. These transdisciplinary contributions apply concepts, methods and tools that facilitate convergence and concerted action between participants collaborating in policy definition and project implementation. The methods and tools include experiments in living-labs, prototypes on site and virtual simulations, as well as participatory approaches including citizen science, the development of alternative scenarios, and visioning plausible futures.
