Book excerpt: In August 2008, two vehicles and 4 people, shipped themselves from Sydney, Australia, to the far east of Russia, Vladivostok to be precise and then drove to London. Once there, 2 of the 4 drove back. On the way they experienced extraordinary adventures; hilarious, dramatic, disastrous, dangerous and miraculous. These included, visa disasters, police run ins, getting lost, running out of diesel, camping, managing disastrous break downs, meeting the locals, and buying a cow. They also met the fabled takhi, barely escaped imprisonment, nearly asphyxiated themselves in a ger, endured nightly visitations of curious locals, bought black market diesel, drove through deep mud, deep sand, over frozen rivers, through sand storms, endured unspeakable latrines and bought a Bankhar puppy. At the end of their trek they’d covered 40,000 kilometres, used 4,500 litres of diesel, and camped out in Russia, the Ukraine and Mongolia for a total of 36 nights, over a combined period of 4 months.
Download or read book Keeping a Family Cow written by Joann S. Grohman and published by Chelsea Green Publishing. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cow is the most productive, efficient creature on earth. She will give you fresh milk, cream, butter, and cheese, build human health and happiness, and even turn a profit for homesteaders and small farmers who seek to offer her bounty to the local market or neighborhood. She will provide rich manure for your garden or land, and will enrich the quality of your life as you benefit from the resources of the natural world. Quite simply, the family that keeps a cow is a healthy family. Originally published in the early 1970s as The Cow Economy and reprinted many times over, Keeping a Family Cow has launched thousands of holistic small-scale dairy farmers and families raising healthy cows in accordance with their true nature. The book offers answers to frequently asked questions like, 'Should I get a cow?' and 'How Much Space do I need?' in addition to extensive information on: • The health benefits of untreated milk; • How to milk a cow effectively and with ease; • Choosing your dairy breed; • Drying off your cow; • Details on calving and breeding; • The importance of hay quality and how to properly feed your cow; • Fencing and pasture management; • Housing, water systems, and other supplies; • Treating milk fever and other diseases and disorders; • Making butter, yogurt, and cheese, and, of course . . . • . . . Everything else the conventional dairy industry doesn’t tell us! Now revised and updated to incorporate new information on the raw milk debate, the conversation about A1 vs. A2 milk, fully grassfed dairies, more practical advice for everyday chores, and updated procedures for cow emergencies. Keeping a Family Cow has not only stood the test of time, it still remains the go-to inspirational manual for raising a family milk cow nearly forty years after its first publication. Joann Grohman has a lifetime of practical experience that has been bound into this one volume and presented in the spirit of fun and learning.
Download or read book Development Asia A Growing Hunger written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps no issue casts a harsher light on social inequities than the growing number of people who go hungry everyday. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), more people go hungry in the world today than at any time since 1970. An estimated 1.02 billion people were undernourished worldwide in 2009, 642 million of whom lived in Asia and the Pacific, the FAO reports. Access to food—or food security—has become an issue that no one can ignore; the lives of millions and the stability of governments depend on shrewd management of food supplies. As the riots and hoarding during the food crisis in 2008 have shown, the mere mention of a shortage is enough to destabilize markets and even governments. As usual, the poorest have been hit the hardest: they have faced rising food prices while the global economic crisis has battered their incomes. Declining crop yields, land degradation, urbanization, and the effects of climate change are putting additional pressure on efforts to produce more food. Market speculation makes the situation even more precarious. This edition of Development Asia tackles this critical issue from varied perspectives—from the points of view of science, civil society, and business. As its cover story, "A Growing Hunger", puts it, there is no quick, one-size-fits-all solution, especially for a region as geographically diverse as Asia and the Pacific. Building consensus is a huge, ongoing challenge for leaders, decision makers, and stakeholders in the region as they wrestle with conflicting priorities. In "The Hunger Monger", renowned financier Jim Rogers, an outspoken advocate of agricultural investments, acknowledges that food security is a highly emotional and political issue. He gives a candid interview on the perceived tension between business interests and social needs, and domestic and international concerns.

Download or read book Wild Florida the Way It Was written by Nancy Dale and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-10 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WILD FLORIDA AS TOLD BY THE PIONEER "COW HUNTERS AND HUNTRESSES" WHO LIVED IT Two hundred years ago, pioneer "cow hunters and huntresses" in search of a better place to grow their families and raise cattle forged their way into the heart of wild Florida. They survived by wit and fortitude and drove down stakes in the unforgiving land. Traveling in covered wagons, alongside their cattle, they carved rutted trails through pine forests, trudged through swamps, black clouds of mosquitoes, survived pestilence, and disease to settle on Florida's rich prairie grassland. These rugged men and women cultivated the land, grew crops, put up clapboard houses, and rounded-up "scrub cattle" left by early Spanish explorers to breed and improve their herd. These pioneer families passed down their heritage of hard work and persistence. As Norman Proveaux, pioneer Myakka rancher puts it, "true 'cow hunters' are bred not made." Indiantown "cow huntress" Iris Wall, quips, she is a "Florida cracker with a little extra salt!" These are the true adventures of wild Florida told by the pioneer "cow hunters and huntresses" who lived it and gave birth to the Florida cattle industry.
