Book For Today I Am a Boy

Download or read book For Today I Am a Boy written by Kim Fu and published by HMH. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A son of Chinese immigrants discovers his true self in a “sharply written debut . . . a coming-of-age tale for our time” (Seattle Times). Publishing Triangle’s Edmund White Award for Debut Fiction, Winner 2015 PEN/ Hemingway Award, Finalist Lambda Literary Award, Finalist Longlisted for the 2014 Flaherty-Dunnan First Novel Prize A Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers Selection for Spring 2014 A New York Times Book Review Editor’s Choice Shortlisted for the Kobo Emerging Writer Prize At birth, Peter Huang is given the Chinese name Juan Chaun, “powerful king.” To his parents, newly settled in small-town Ontario, he is the exalted only son in a sea of daughters, the one who will finally fulfill his immigrant father’s dreams of Western masculinity. Peter and his sisters grow up in an airless house of order and obligation, though secrets and half-truths simmer beneath the surface. At the first opportunity, each of the girls lights out on her own. But for Peter, escape is not as simple as fleeing his parents’ home. Though his father crowned him “powerful king,” Peter knows otherwise. He knows he is really a girl. With the help of his far-flung sisters and the sympathetic souls he finds along the way, Peter inches ever closer to his own life, his own skin, in this darkly funny, emotionally acute, stunningly powerful debut. “Sensitively wrought . . . “For Today I Am a Boy” is as much about the construction of self as the consequences of its unwitting destruction—and what happens when its acceptance seems as foreign as another country.” —The New York Times Book Review “Subtle and controlled, with flashes of humor and warmth.” —Slate “Keeps you reading. Told in snatches of memory that hurt so much they have the ring of truth.” —Bust

Book excerpt: "Can I now, a white-haired man who gets into the movies at reduced cost, do I have any magic words left? Can I get a miracle? If I can recall my youth and understand it, that may be the miracle I seek now." When David Hays was 66 and had joined a synagogue for the first time in over fifty years, he decided to study Hebrew and be a bar mitzvah. And so this world-renowned theatrical designer, founder of the legendary National Theatre of the Deaf, father of two grown children and coauthor of the bestselling "My Old Man and the Sea," borrowed his grandson's beginner's Hebrew workbook and joined a class of twelve-year-olds. It launched a wondrous journey of faith and community. In "Today I Am a Boy," Hays's new world begins to intersect with his own history: on Yom Kippur, Hays, who has sailed around Cape Horn with his son, reads the story of Jonah to the congregation and gives a sermon on the Old Testament and the sea. His long-dormant love of learning is wholly rekindled. At the stage of life when most of us begin to slow down, Hays feels more alive than ever, rejuvenated by newfound connections to his youth and faith. "Today I Am a Boy" is a brave, clear-eyed and joyous examination of life.

Book excerpt: What turns citizens into refugees and then immigrants? In this powerful middle-grade debut, Sami and his family embark on a harrowing journey to save themselves from the Syrian civil war. Sami loves his life in Damascus, Syria. He hangs out with his best friend playing video games; he's trying out for the football team; he adores his family and gets annoyed by them in equal measure. But his comfortable life gets sidetracked abruptly after a bombing in a nearby shopping mall. Knowing that the violence will only get worse, Sami's parents decide they must flee their home for the safety of the UK. Boy, Everywhere chronicles their harrowing journey and struggle to settle in a new land. Forced to sell all their belongings and leave their friends and beloved grandmother behind, Sami and his family travel across the Middle East to Turkey, where they end up in a smuggler's den. From there, they cross the treacherous waters of the Mediterranean and manage to fly to England, only to be separated and detained in an immigration prison for the crime of seeking asylum. Yet the transition from refugee to immigrant in a new life will be the greatest challenge Sami has ever faced. Based on the experiences of real Syrian refugees, this thoughtful middle-grade novel is the rare book to delve deeply into this years-long crisis. Portions of the proceeds of this book will be used to benefit Syrian refugees in the UK and to set up a grant to support an unpublished refugee or immigrant writer in the US. Sami's story is one of survival, of family and friendship, of bravery and longing ... Sami could be any one of us.

Book excerpt: A virtuous young woman journeys to the Land of the Dead to retrieve the still-beating heart of a king; a wily corpse-monster tricks his young captor into setting him free; a king falls under a curse that turns him into a cannibal; a shepherd who understands the speech of animals saves a princess from certain death. These are just a few of the wondrous tales that await readers of this collection of Tibetan Buddhist folktales. Fifteen stories are told for modern readers in a vivid, accessible style that reflects a centuries-old tradition of storytelling in the monasteries and marketplaces of Tibet. As a child growing up in a Buddhist monastery, Yeshi Dorjee would often coax the elderly lamas into telling him folktales. By turns thrilling, mysterious, clever, and often hilariously funny, the stories he narrates here also teach important lessons about mindfulness, compassion, and other key Buddhist principles. They will delight readers of all ages, scholars and students, Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike.

Book Caboodle of Short Stories

Download or read book Caboodle of Short Stories written by P. Kasturi Rangan and published by P. Kasturi Rangan. This book was released on with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of 8 stories for children and the age defying adults has been written over a period of many years now. The first story was written some 10 years back and I had no idea that one day I will bring it out as a compendium of my short stories. The feedbacks I received when I published the first ones as stand alone stories propelled me without a conscious but irresistible rudder towards this goal. I write a story without any set boundary or time when I feel like it towards the act of writing. I simply put down on paper the incessant urge I feel to weave a story. Some of these stories started with just an off-hand comment from a colleague or friend whereas others were more of an exertion of thought towards reaching a certain goal. The goal is always to produce a story that will be liked by children as well as by adults who are still young at heart. Physical age is not counted! Most of the stories that I see for children nowadays seem to me to be preachy. They seem to treat the child as a vessel of change by turning their thoughts towards behaving better or giving out some morals to shape their course of life. Its as if we adults (some only in appearance) want the child to behave or live an utopian life when such utopia exists only in our dreams. I have tried my best to refrain from such efforts and to treat kids as kids and provide them a situation, a problem and a possible solution. The teaching part is left out and the learning is for to the child to figure out. If the story puts a smile on the face of the reader, I shall feel my purpose is achieved. I strongly feel that a child should be left alone to enjoy his or her childhood. They shall soon have to grow up and conform to societal and other pressures. The pressure to live in a certain way will come with time. These stories are meant to provide them an alternative way to enjoy their time and to plot for their next adventure. The adventure called ‘Life’. Thanks to all who knowingly or surreptitiously helped with the course of these stories. Their comments and behaviours have made these stories flow, sometimes into unknown territories from which I had to struggle hard to rescue them and sometimes myself as well. I hope you like them. Illustrations for the stories have been done by Sahayaa Jeevan. Thanks a lot for your help. P. Kasturi Rangan
