Book Joseph Jongen and His Organ Music

Download or read book Joseph Jongen and His Organ Music written by John Scott Whiteley and published by Pendragon Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph Jongen was Director of the Brussels Conservatoire from 1925 to 1939. He was first and foremost a composer and yet his career as an organist and composer of organ music was remarkable. His Sonata Eroca has become one of the enduring works of the repertory, and the Symphonie Concertante, commissioned by Rodman Wanamaker for the organ of the Philadelphia store, has been considered the finest of all twentieth-century organ concertos. This is the first book ever to appear about Joseph Jongen in any language. It is based on twenty years of research by its author, John Scott Whiteley. Part I traces Jongen's life and achievements as an organist, from his earliest training in Franck's birthplace, Lige, to his exile in England and his final years in Brussels, during which time he headed the team that designed the organ for Belgian Radio. Part II is a guide to the organ music from the points of view of both performer and musicologist. Appendices provide a catalogue of works, a numbering system for his works without opus numbers, specifications of the organs he played and lists of variant readings in his manuscripts. This book is indispensable for serious students of the organ, the Romantic organ repertoire and European music of the early twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A valuable resource for musicologists, theorists, pianists, and aestheticians interested in reading about Schumann’s views on virtuosity.” —Notes Considered one of the greatest composers—and music critics—of the Romantic era, Robert Schumann (1810–1856) played an important role in shaping nineteenth-century German ideas about virtuosity. Forging his career in the decades that saw abundant public fascination with the feats and creations of virtuosos (Liszt, Paganini, and Chopin among others), Schumann engaged with instrumental virtuosity through not only his compositions and performances but also his music reviews and writings about his contemporaries. Ultimately, the discourse of virtuosity influenced the culture of Western “art music” well beyond the nineteenth century and into the present day. By examining previously unexplored archival sources, Alexander Stefaniak looks at the diverse approaches to virtuosity Schumann developed over the course of his career, revealing several distinct currents in nineteenth-century German virtuosity and the enduring flexibility of virtuosity discourse.

He set a high standard for both organ performance and choral direction still widely revered and celebrated. This book charts GOT’s life from his birth in Stourbridge, Worcestershire, in 1917 to his sudden death at the age of just 61. It looks at his career as student, teacher, choirmaster, accompanist and, especially, celebrated recitalist, at home and abroad. Drawing heavily on primary source material, including family archives and photographs, the book is complemented and underpinned by the memories and reminiscences of relations, friends, colleagues, peers, and others. It includes many contemporary reviews of his performances, right from his early days as a teenage Fellow of the Royal College of Organists until his last masterly recitals. Appendices give details about Tristram’s recitals, broadcasts, and recordings, alongside specifications of the instruments at Christchurch Priory. The book also provides access to a selection of previously unreleased recordings made in the 1960s and early 1970s. Geoffrey Tristram: A Very British Organist, paints a rich picture of the man (husband, father, friend) and the musician, a player who had a significant influence on generations of organists and singers.

Book Organized Time

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jason Yust
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2018
  • ISBN : 0190696486
  • Pages : 441 pages

Download or read book Organized Time written by Jason Yust and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organized Time is the first attempt to unite theories of harmony, rhythm and meter, and form under a common idea of structured time. Building off of recent advances in music theory in essential subfields-rhythmic theory, tonal structure, and the theory of musical form--author Jason Yust demonstrates that tonal music exhibits similar hierarchical organization in each of these dimensions. Yust develops a network model for temporal structure with an application of mathematical graph theory, which leads ultimately to musical applications of a multi-dimensional polytope called the associahedron. A wealth of analytical examples includes not only the familiar tonal canon-J.S. Bach, Mozart, Schumann--but also lesser known masters of the musical Enlightenment such as C.P.E. and J.C. Bach, Boccherini, and Johann Gottlieb Graun. Yust's approach has wide-ranging ramifications across music theory, enabling new approaches to musical closure, hypermeter, formal function, syncopation, and rhythmic dissonance, as well as historical observations about the development of sonata form and the innovations of Haydn and Beethoven. Making a forceful argument for the independence of musical modalities and for a multivalent approach to music analysis, Organized Time establishes the aesthetic importance of structural disjunction, the conflict of structure in different modalities, in numerous analytical contexts.
