Perhaps therefore it was dangerous to embark on a holiday with a group of strangers? Two weeks in Seychelles may have seemed like paradise on paper but the reality would prove rather different. In the company of, among others, a sex-starved doctor, a shrewd psychotherapist and a frightened vegetarian, Imogen is forced to face up to her own shortcomings and to take action. It's a liberating experience, but not quite in the way she intended!

Book To Travel Hopefully

Download or read book To Travel Hopefully written by Christopher Rush and published by Profile Books. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Christopher Rush's wife died suddenly of cancer, leaving him with two young children, his world fell apart. He not only stopped writing, he also lost faith in everything that had informed his existence: literature, the arts, his role as teacher, his love of nature, the society of friends. Nothing could cure his almost suicidal depression. At last he decided to try to reclaim his sanity in the least expected of ways. A confirmed non-traveller, he went to France, bought a donkey and disappeared into the mountains of the Cevennes. Like a fellow Scot, Robert Louis Stevenson, who had made the same journey over a century before, he hoped to find a new reason to live. To Travel Hopefully is a memoir of grief and recovery, expressed in an intensely private but universal language, which records a compelling journey of the spirit from defeat to victory. Anyone who has had to confront bereavement will find in these pages an understanding, experience and expression of the human predicament which go far beyond mere sympathy.

Book The Collected Letters of C S Lewis Volume 1

Download or read book The Collected Letters of C S Lewis Volume 1 written by C. S. Lewis and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2009-07-07 with total page 3099 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life and mind of C. S. Lewis have fascinated those who have read his works. This collection of his personal letters reveals a unique intellectual journey. The first of a three-volume collection, this volume contains letters from Lewis's boyhood, his army days in World War I, and his early academic life at Oxford. Here we encounter the creative, imaginative seeds that gave birth to some of his most famous works. At age sixteen, Lewis begins writing to Arthur Greeves, a boy his age in Belfast who later becomes one of his most treasured friends. Their correspondence would continue over the next fifty years. In his letters to Arthur, Lewis admits that he has abandoned the Christian faith. "I believe in no religion," he says. "There is absolutely no proof for any of them." Shortly after arriving at Oxford, Lewis is called away to war. Quickly wounded, he returns to Oxford, writing home to describe his thoughts and feelings about the horrors of war as well as the early joys of publication and academic success. In 1929 Lewis writes to Arthur of a friend ship that was to greatly influence his life and writing. "I was up till 2:30 on Monday talking to the Anglo-Saxon professor Tolkien who came back with me to College ... and sat discoursing of the gods and giants & Asgard for three hours ..." Gradually, as Lewis spends time with Tolkien and other friends, he admits in his letters to a change of view on religion. In 1930 he writes, "Whereas once I would have said, 'Shall I adopt Christianity', I now wait to see whether it will adopt me ..." The Collected Letters of C. S. Lewis, Volume I offers an inside perspective to Lewis's thinking during his formative years. Walter Hooper's insightful notes and biographical appendix of all the correspondents make this an irreplaceable reference for those curious about the life and work of one of the most creative minds of the modern era.

Book excerpt: “The Beatitudes: A Journey Home” is framed by the story of The Prodigal Son in the Gospel of Luke (Chapter 15). Readers are encouraged to engage the story by imagining themselves as The Prodigal who, after living a decadent lifestyle and then “hitting bottom”, discovered his poverty of spirit and then found himself grieving desperately enough to realize that his only hope was to go home to his father, believing he would be merciful enough to let him become a servant in his home. The Chapters in Kingery’s book examine each Beatitude, seeing them as the stages in every journey of faith. The Beatitudes are, in some respects, like an ethical code for living, a recipe for walking in faith. Take this journey of faith.
