Download or read book The Pig Book written by Citizens Against Government Waste and published by St. Martin's Griffin. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The federal government wastes your tax dollars worse than a drunken sailor on shore leave. The 1984 Grace Commission uncovered that the Department of Defense spent $640 for a toilet seat and $436 for a hammer. Twenty years later things weren't much better. In 2004, Congress spent a record-breaking $22.9 billion dollars of your money on 10,656 of their pork-barrel projects. The war on terror has a lot to do with the record $413 billion in deficit spending, but it's also the result of pork over the last 18 years the likes of: - $50 million for an indoor rain forest in Iowa - $102 million to study screwworms which were long ago eradicated from American soil - $273,000 to combat goth culture in Missouri - $2.2 million to renovate the North Pole (Lucky for Santa!) - $50,000 for a tattoo removal program in California - $1 million for ornamental fish research Funny in some instances and jaw-droppingly stupid and wasteful in others, The Pig Book proves one thing about Capitol Hill: pork is king!

Book The Great American Jobs Scam

Download or read book The Great American Jobs Scam written by Greg LeRoy and published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers. This book was released on 2005-07-21 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past 20 years, corporations have been receiving huge tax breaks and subsidies in the name of "jobs, jobs, jobs." But, as Greg LeRoy demonstrates in this important new book, it's become a costly scam. Playing states and communities off against each other in a bidding war for jobs, corporations reduce their taxes to next-to-nothing and win subsidy packages that routinely exceed $100,000 per job. But the subsidies come with few strings attached. So companies feel free to provide fewer jobs, or none at all, or even outsource and lay people off. They are also free to pay poverty wages without health care or other benefits. All too often, communities lose twice. They lose jobs--or gain jobs so low-paying they do nothing to help the community--and lose revenue due to the huge corporate tax breaks. That means fewer resources for maintaining schools, public services, and infrastructure. In the end, the local governments that were hoping for economic revitalization are actually worse off. They're forced to raise taxes on struggling small businesses and working families, or reduce services, or both. Greg LeRoy uses up-to-the-minute examples, naming names--including Wal-Mart, Raytheon, Fidelity, Bank of America, Dell, and Boeing--to reveal how the process works. He shows how carefully corporations orchestrate the bidding wars between states and communities. He exposes shadowy "site location consultants" who play both sides against the middle, and he dissects government and corporate mumbo-jumbo with plain talk. The book concludes by offering common-sense reforms that will give taxpayers powerful new tools to deter future abuses and redirect taxpayer investments in ways that will really pay off.

Download or read book Auditing Fundamentals in a South African Context written by Pieter von Wielligh and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Auditing Fundamentals in a South African Context 2e is a practical, applied and engaging introductory textbook that supports students throughout the undergraduate level of the Auditing curriculum. The text is designed to enhance learning by supporting holistic understanding: theory is presented within the framework of the real-world business environment, assisting students to apply principles and standards with an understanding of their context. The text offers a clear pedagogical framework, which supports applied learning and develops independent, critical and reflective engagement with the subject matter. A continuing case study, which follows each stage of the audit of a South African company, demonstrates the practical application of learned principles and the integration of the auditing process with a typical audit client's business. The second edition is comprehensively revised to reflect all relevant, recent changes in the requirements of legislation, financial reporting and auditing pronouncements and codes, and addresses the new Code of Professional Conduct which was issued by the SA Institute of Chartered Accountants in the final quarter of 2018. Additional educational resources support teaching and learning, assisting students to develop the academic skills required to master their studies.

Book Republic of Texas Poll Lists for 1846

Download or read book Republic of Texas Poll Lists for 1846 written by Marion Day Mullins and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1974 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arranged alphabetically, this work lists the names and counties of residence of approximately 18,000 Texas taxpayers. (A "poll" tax of one dollar was levied on every white male resident over the age of twenty-one and on women who were heads of household.) By 1846, when Texas became the thirty-sixth state in the Union, there were sixty-seven county governments already organized as functioning units of the state, yet no authorized census of the state was undertaken until 1850. This 1846 poll list, compiled from the original tax rolls housed in the Texas State Archives, is actually the nearest thing we have to a complete census of the period.
