Book Mama s Diamonds

Download or read book Mama s Diamonds written by Emcie Day and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2008-12-20 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ms. Day was born and raised in a small town in upstate New York during the late 30's through the early 50's. Being part of a family of nine children and an alcoholic father brought on many hardships, yet there were many delightful moments as well. "Mama's Diamonds" is a collection of these tales. The story tells of the extent that the mother and children of this poor Irish family had to go through and the things they had to endure in order to survive. Their wily nature helped. Mama O'Brien loved all her children and would have been shocked to know what devious means they used and the risks they took in order to obtain some of the necessities of life. Perhaps she knew, but just couldn't bear to acknowledge that this was for the most part, required in order to supplement the meager substance provided by their father. One might ask about her precious diamonds and their worth, and why couldn't they be used to help support the family; but they did ... just not in a materialistic sense.

Book Missing Pieces of the Puzzle

Download or read book Missing Pieces of the Puzzle written by Billeace Bloom and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2021-10-14 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Billeace Bloom was once an atheist driven by toxic fears to learn if God was real and to find Him if possible. As a result of that search, her life now provides credible evidence that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. In a fascinating autobiography, Billeace begins by revealing how her views of Christianity as a mundane existence fueled her internal struggle to either remain an atheist or release her entire life to God. After detailing how the Lord told her there is no room in the abundant life for boredom, Billeace discloses how she never dreamed how true those words would become when she surrendered her will for His will. As she describes her journey to the truth, Billeace becomes whole when she fills in each piece of her spiritual puzzle. She reminds us that with God as our constant companion, life overflows with miracles, transformations, lessons, laughter, mysteries to solve, and victories. Missing Pieces of the Puzzle is the true story of a former atheist who found the reality of God, experienced Him in remarkable ways, and affirmed the Bible is God’s own words that can dramatically change lives.

Book Big Mama s Little Black Jesus

Download or read book Big Mama s Little Black Jesus written by William Roosevelt Leggette and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-04-19 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many books have been written about the Southern lifestyle during the 1930's through the 1940's, but sit back and lend your ear (eyes) to a personal account of how a young man grew up under these trying conditions. Not only were the conditions trying, but getting an education was bleak and almost impossible, not just due to the segregation, but from the internal conflicts among the families. See how the hand of God moved to help this family over-come hardships and calamities, but how He touched the life of this young man when he was determined to better himself, his sisters and brothers, mother and father and to make a life outside the Racial Southern expectations of young black men. These are issues that I experienced growing up as a black person in the South in the USA. I want my children and grandchildren to know the things I experienced and how I was able to overcome and make a better life for my family. Currently I am living in Southern California, and I have lived quite a long life. I am currently on the downside of being a septagenarian. Unfortunately, I have lost my eyesight due to a disease called diabetic retinopathy. I am dependent on my wife and my sister to assist me in getting this book completed. I have been trying to get the book finished for the past fifteen years. I hope this book gives insight to not only my family, but to all that would care to read it.

Book Mama s Boy

Book excerpt: Mama's Boy describes the life of author Robert Hood: his early years in a coal-mining village during the Depression, his life in the navy during World War II, and his later professional success. At the heart of Hood's memoir is his proud and talented mother, who is determined that her headstrong son will become somebody. But the impish boy is more interested in sports than poetry recitations or declamation contests. Anxious to enter the war, seventeen-year-old Hood enlists in the U.S. Navy in 1944 and serves on Guam. He returns, attends college, and eventually ends up in New York City as the editor-in-chief of Boys' Life Magazine. As Hood achieves success, he meets some of the distinguished artists and authors of the twentieth century. He lunches with Andre Kertesz, Alex Haley, and Isaac Asimov; takes tea with Salvador Dali and Philippe Halsman; and chats on the phone with Margaret Coit, Catherine Drinker Bowen, and Margaret Bourke-White. He also interviews great athletes such as Hank Greenberg, Mickey Mantle, and Willie Mays. But most important to Hood are those people in his family who mentored him so well. Mama's Boy pays tribute to his parents, grandparents, siblings, uncles, and aunt. His love for them bears witness to the endurance of human memory.

Book Til All These Things Be Done

Download or read book Til All These Things Be Done written by Suzanne Moyers and published by She Writes Press. This book was released on 2022-09-13 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set against the rich but often troubled history of Blacklands, Texas, during an era of pandemic, scientific discovery, and social upheaval, the novel offers a unique—yet eerily familiar—backdrop to a universal tale of triumphing over loss. Even as dementia clouds other memories, eighty-three-year-old Leola can’t forget her father’s disappearance when she was sixteen. Now, as Papa appears in haunting visions, Leola relives the circumstances of that loss: the terrible accident that steals Papa’s livelihood, sending the family deeper into poverty; a scandal from Mama’s past that still wounds; and Leola’s growing unease with her brutally bigoted society. When Papa vanishes while seeking work in Houston and Mama dies in the “boomerang” Influenza outbreak of 1919, Leola and her young sisters are sent to an orphanage, where her exposure of a dark injustice means sacrificing a vital clue to Papa’s whereabouts. That decision echoes into the future, as new details about his disappearance suggest betrayal too painful to contemplate. Only in old age, as her visions of Papa grow more realistic, does Leola confront her long-buried grief, leading to a remarkable family discovery that could offer peace, at last.
