Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essential to Methodist revivalism was the personal conversion experience, which constituted the basis of salvation and church membership. Revivalism, maintains Airhart, was a distinctive form of piety and socialization that was critical in helping Methodists define who they were, colouring their understanding of how religion was to be experienced, practised, articulated, and cultivated. This revivalist piety, even more than doctrine or policy, was the identifying mark of Methodism in the nineteenth century. But, during the late Victorian era, the Methodist presentation of the religious life underwent a transformation. By 1925, when the Methodist Church was incorporated into the United Church of Canada, its most prominent leaders were espousing an approach to piety that was essentially, and sometimes explicitly, non-revivalist. The Methodist approach to personal religion changed during this transition and, significantly, Methodists increasingly became identified with social Christianity -- although experience remained a key aspect of their theology. There was also a growing tendency to associate revivalism with fundamentalism, a new religious development that used the Methodist language of conversion but was unappealing to Canadian Methodists. Airhart portrays the tensions between tradition and innovation through stories of the men and women who struggled to revitalize religion in an age when conventional social assumptions and institutions were being challenged by the ideals of the progressive movement. Serving the Present Age is an account of Canadian Methodist participation in a realignment of North American Protestantism which supporters believed would better enable them, in the words of a well-known Wesley hymn, "to serve the present age."

  • ISBN : 9780865974098
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book The Present Age written by Robert A. Nisbet and published by Amagi Books. This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Present Age challenges readers to re-examine the role of the United States in the world since World War I. Nisbet criticises Americans for isolationism at home, discusses the gutting of educational standards, the decay of education, the presence of government in all facets of life, the diminished connection to community, and the prominence of economic arrangements driving everyday life in America. This work is deeply indebted to the analyses of Tocqueville and Bryce regarding the threats that bureaucracy, centralisation, and creeping conformity pose to liberty and individual independence in the western world. The Present Age relates a tragedy -- the unprecedented militarisation of American life in the decades after 1914, as the result of the necessary resistance to National Socialist and Communist totalitarianism that fed into and reinforced the profound tendencies toward centralisation within modern society.

Book Presidential Praise

Download or read book Presidential Praise written by C. Edward Spann and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presidential Praise: Our Presidents and Their Hymns offers the most comprehensive coverage ever written of the influence of hymns on the lives and administrations of America's presidents. Each chapter begins with Michael Williams's concise presentation of each president's path to the White House and his accomplishments and failures as president. C. Edward Spann then introduces how each president regarded music, whether or not he was musical, and music in the White House during each president's administration. These hymns may be related to developments in the life of the president, including his spiritual journey, major decisions he had to make as president, or even his selection of the inaugural Scripture. Spann then tells the story of how the hymn was written, both the words and the music. Presenting this scholarly material in an inspiring manner is part of the delight of the book. In doing so, the book covers a panorama of hymnody from 1614 to the 1980s. After an interpretation of the words, it is demonstrated why the chosen hymns were meaningful to each president. The format of each chapter reveals this special emphasis that can't be found elsewhere.

Book Honor to the Great Head of the Church

This book was released on 2021-08-11 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honor to the Great Head of the Church A Transformational Model for Church Leadership, Administration, and Management This Volume One of the Transformational Church Administration Series is support for the organized church to stay on Christ’s message of redemption He has set for the church. Its purpose is to share passion for a committed focus on God’s ordained purpose and mission for His church. Church leaders are encouraged throughout the volume to adhere to theological principles for continued devotion to God’s one true mission. That message is that Christ is God’s mission. Christ is God’s only mission for the church, the people of God. The church exists only as it participates in the “act of Christ.” Chapter by chapter, the book communicates the necessity to intentionally combine God’s divine mission as presented from biblical theology with practical applications of organizational leadership and management. The critical shift with this book apart for other resources highlighting the works of church administration is the acknowledgements that for the church to remain under the Lordship of Christ; the church must be in a continued pursuit to seek Jesus the Chris in all engagements of worship, administration, management and service. The Lord’s purpose of redemption from sin and death has to remain front and central in every ministry, in all programmatic formats, and every service project represented by the church. God’s call to redeem lost man unto salvation and discipleship is highlighted as functions to be grounded through participation in service models and organization. Learners come to view leadership and administration from a scriptural context. As a result, leadership theories and principles of management accurately operate with results that brings edification to the glory of God in all matters of church leadership for administration.
