Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Master Plan for Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine Fort mchenry, the low masonry citadel overlooking the entrance to Baltimore harbor, recalls a moment of crisis in the early years of the Republic. It commemorates both the stubborn American defense of the city on September 12-14, 1814, against a British land and naval assault and the song, composed by a young Washington lawyer, which celebrated that defense. After Francis Scott Key caught sight of the fort's flag, still flying after a day and a night of bombardment, he began writing the lines which were eventually adopted as our National Anthem. The ship on which Key drafted his first words, the hotel where he later revised the song, and the shop that printed it as a handbill the day after the battle have all long since disappeared. But the fort still stands as a reminder of the men and events that gave the country a classic expression of American patriotism. For nearly a century after the battle, the fort continued in active service, though it never fired another shot in anger and the changing technology of war condemned it to obsolescence. Since 1912 the fort and its 43 acres have been set aside for historical purposes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fort McHenry National Monument and Historical Shrine, Maryland One of the three escaped and reported the incident to the commander of a British scouting party. The latter considered that by this unfriendly act the doctor had violated his pledge to the English. Forthwith, a patrol of soldiers was dispatched to Dr. Beanes' house. They placed him under arrest, then escorted him to the British base on the Patuxent and turned him over to Admiral Cochrane. Thus a chain of events was set in operation which was indirectly responsible for the situation which brought about the composition of the poem, The star-spangled Banner. Book Fort McHenry and Baltimore s Harbor Defenses

Download or read book Fort McHenry and Baltimore s Harbor Defenses written by Merle T. Cole and published by Arcadia Library Editions. This book was released on 2001-07 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few residents or visitors to the Baltimore metropolitan area understand the strange concrete structures they routinely pass when crossing the Francis Scott Key Bridge or glimpse while fishing or boating in the Patapsco River, but the treasured heritage associated with these noble structures is a part of our collective past. Fort McHenry and Baltimore's later harbor defenses played significant roles in our nation's evolving military history and in the greater American drama. Many books have celebrated the defense of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812 and the birthplace of our national anthem, but no other provides the wealth of imagery contained within these pages. The fort's military history from its construction through the British bombardment, the Civil War, and two World Wars, as well as its unique status as the only fort to be designated a National Monument and Historic Shrine, are explored through the valuable visual record that remains. Following the Civil War, when advances in technology had rendered brick forts such as Fort McHenry obsolete, the United States Army constructed three forts- Armistead, Smallwood, and Howard-and renovated a fourth-Carroll-to protect Baltimore's harbor. The architecture, weapons, daily life of soldiers, and changing military uses of Fort McHenry and these "modern" forts, some of which now serve as waterfront parks, are the focus of this illustrated retrospective.
