Download or read book Some of My Best Friends Are Black written by Tanner Colby and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2013-07-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An irreverent, yet powerful exploration of race relations by the New York Times-bestselling author of The Chris Farley Show Frank, funny, and incisive, Some of My Best Friends Are Black offers a profoundly honest portrait of race in America. In a book that is part reportage, part history, part social commentary, Tanner Colby explores why the civil rights movement ultimately produced such little true integration in schools, neighborhoods, offices, and churches—the very places where social change needed to unfold. Weaving together the personal, intimate stories of everyday people—black and white—Colby reveals the strange, sordid history of what was supposed to be the end of Jim Crow, but turned out to be more of the same with no name. He shows us how far we have come in our journey to leave mistrust and anger behind—and how far all of us have left to go.

This new edition equips study groups and congregations with questions for discussion and a sermon series guide for preachers.
Download or read book Still Bigger Than Pink written by Csp Mirm Lori Lober and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-05 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conclusion On January 2, 2009, I saw my oncologist for my annual scans. While I am confident in my wellness and feel better than I have ever felt, I cannot help but be a bit nervous each time the tests are run. I am alive and well with great news! All are clear and I remain "no evidence of disease"! I know dedication to self-care and my new IsAgenix regimen are working to create balance in my body allowing for optimum healing! My doctors cannot give me definite answers as to why my treatments have been successful when others have failed, or even why I'm still alive and thriving now, NINE years after my stage IV, metastatic breast cancer diagnosis. However, they have said many times that I "am a very proactive patient." Of course, being proactive does not guarantee success and long-term survival - unfortunately, there are no guarantees. However, I feel that truly believing that I was not going to die, most certainly was an important factor. In addition to that, my faith, the support of my family and friends, the combination of everything discussed in this book, and yes, a little luck, have all contributed to my long-term survival. Prior to being diagnosed with cancer, I would not necessarily have considered myself an extraordinarily lucky person. Now, however, the quality of life I live every day is much richer, the special moments more memorable, and the love I have to offer both to myself as well as to others, is deeper and more fulfilling. This is precisely why I tell everyone I meet that I feel "blessed" to have actually had cancer, and I continue to be deeply grateful to now be healthy and happy. Journey well! Lori C. Download or read book Call Me Athena written by Colby Cedar Smith and published by Andrews McMeel Publishing. This book was released on 2021-08-17 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This enchanting novel in verse captures one young woman’s struggle for independence, equality, and identity as the daughter of Greek and French immigrants in tumultuous 1930s Detroit. Call Me Athena: Girl from Detroit is a beautifully written novel in verse loosely based on author Colby Cedar Smith’s paternal grandmother. The story follows Mary as the American-born daughter of Greek and French immigrants living in Detroit in the 1930s, creating a historically accurate portrayal of life as an immigrant during the Great Depression, hunger strikes, and violent riots. Mary lives in a tiny apartment with her immigrant parents, her brothers, and her twin sister, and she questions why her parents ever came to America. She yearns for true love, to own her own business, and to be an independent, modern American woman—much to the chagrin of her parents, who want her to be a “good Greek girl.” Mary’s story is peppered with flashbacks to her parents’ childhoods in Greece and northern France; their stories connect with Mary as they address issues of arranged marriage, learning about independence, and yearning to grow beyond one’s own culture. Though Call Me Athena is written from the perspective of three profoundly different narrators, it has a wide-reaching message: It takes courage to fight for tradition and heritage, as well as freedom, love, and equality.

Download or read book Shirley Williams written by Mark Peel and published by Biteback Publishing. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For fifty years Shirley Williams has been one of Britain's best-known and best-loved politicians, admired for her warmth, sincerity, integrity and compassion. Hailing from an impeccable intellectual background, the young Shirley seemed destined for great things as she rose effortlessly up the political ladder. Yet for all the talk of her becoming the country's first female Prime Minister that accolade passed her by, her feisty independence earning her a career that has been anything but perpetual sunshine. In this first-ever biography, Mark Peel explores the dilemma that has faced Williams throughout the highs and lows of her political life: how to tread the line between firmly held principles and party solidarity. Drawing on his unfettered access to the family archive and conversations with Williams's colleagues, Peel skilfully teases out the contradictions at the heart of this remarkable character. Shirley Williams: The Biography reveals the surprisingly vulnerable figure behind the reassuring public façade. It uncovers the expectations placed on Williams by her highly ambitious parents, her guilt about her privileged background, and her often tumultuous personal relationships. The result is a touching, intimate portrait of one of the most complex and popular politicians of our time, a woman who through good times and bad has retained her essential humanity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brian and Ezra’s story continues in the moving sequel to Thanks a Lot, Universe, which New York Times bestselling author Nic Stone called “a glorious ode to the beauty of preteen friendship.” Brian knows that anxiety and depression aren’t things that are magically fixed overnight, but he still doesn’t understand why it’s all hitting him so hard right now. Sure, his dad is still in prison and middle school is still stressful, but he’s seeing a therapist, he’s got good friends, and he’s doing really well on the basketball team. He should be fine, so why does he feel too tired to get out of bed some days? And why does he turn into “Cursed Monster Brian” and snap whenever someone asks him what’s wrong? Ezra is trying his best to look out for Brian, but he’s not sure that he’s actually helping. Sure, they’re still best friends, but as Ezra starts preparing for the talent show, he also starts talking with Victor—the kid who relentlessly bullied Brian last year. It seems like Victor’s changed, and whenever he and Ezra hang out and make music together, Ezra’s stomach feels a little bit swoopy. But even if he likes making music and talking with Victor, he still feels like he’s betraying his best friend whenever they’re together. And he worries that he’s falling for another boy who won’t return his feelings . . . Earnest, heartfelt, and full of humor, Chad Lucas’s You Owe Me One, Universe explores the nuances and complications of middle school relationships—and shows how sometimes the smallest acts of caring can be the ones that matter most.

She doesn’t know that Grayson has made a bargain with the devil (otherwise known as the pirate hunter James Ardmore) to ensure the safety of his daughter. His sentence having been commuted at the last minute, Christopher spent the last four years working for his freedom as he crisscrossed the world.
