We teach students how to solve programming problems with a 7-step approach centered on thinking about how to develop an algorithm. We also teach students to deeply understand how the code works by teaching students how to execute the code by hand. This is Edition 1 (the second edition, as C programmers count from 0). Book Teaching with Dystopian Text

Download or read book Teaching with Dystopian Text written by Michael Arthur Soares and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-13 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching with Dystopian Text propounds an exchange of spatial to pedagogical practices centered around “Orwellian Spaces,” signaling a new utility for teaching with dystopian texts in secondary education. The volume details the urgency of dystopian texts for secondary students, providing theoretical frameworks, classroom examples and practical research. The function of dystopian texts, such as George Orwell’s 1984, as social and political critique is demonstrated as central to their power. Teaching with Dystopian Text: Exploring Orwellian Spaces for Student Empowerment and Resilience makes a case that dystopian texts can be instrumental in the transfer of spatial practices to pedagogical practices. Pedagogical application creates links between the text and the student through defamiliarization, connecting the student to practices of resistance in the space of the classroom. The volume also addresses the challenges of teaching dystopian text in a dystopian educational climate including the COVID-19 lockdown. In addition to appealing to scholars and researchers of literacy education, language education and dystopian text, this book will also be a powerful yet accessible resource for secondary teachers as they address dystopian concerns with students in the complicated twenty-first century.

Book Metaphors in Medical Texts

Download or read book Metaphors in Medical Texts written by Geraldine W. van Rijn-van Tongeren and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 1997 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book claims that metaphors must be seen as indispensable cognitive and communicative instruments in medical science. Analysis of texts taken from recently published medical handbooks reveals what kind of metaphors are used to structure certain medical concepts and what the functions are of the metaphorical expressions in the texts. Special attention is drawn to the idea that scientific facts do not originate from passive observation of reality. Imaginative thinking and the use of metaphors are required to make the unknown accessible to us. Yet, although metaphors are often a sine qua non for the genesis of a scientific fact, they may also inhibit the development of alternative views. This is due to the fact that metaphors always highlight certain aspects of a phenomenon while other aspects remain obscured. Analysis of the metaphors used in medical texts may reveal exactly which aspects are highlighted and which remain hidden and may thus help to find alternative metaphors (and possibly therapies) when current metaphors are no longer adequate. This book should be of interest not only to linguists, translators and researchers working in the field of intercultural communication, but also to doctors and medical scientists, and those interested in the philosophy of science.

Book Online Misogyny as Hate Crime

Download or read book Online Misogyny as Hate Crime written by Kim Barker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ideal of an inclusive and participatory Internet has been undermined by the rise of misogynistic abuse on social media platforms. However, limited progress has been made at national – and to an extent European – levels in addressing this issue. In England and Wales, the tackling of underlying causes of online abuse has been overlooked because the law focuses on punishment rather than measures to prevent such abuses. Furthermore, online abuse has a significant impact on its victims that is underestimated by policymakers. This volume critically analyses the legal provisions that are currently deployed to tackle forms of online misogyny, and focuses on three aspects; firstly, the phenomenon of social media abuse; secondly, the poor and disparate legal responses to social media abuses; and thirdly, the similar failings of hate crime to tackle problems of online gender-based abuses. This book advances a compelling argument for legal changes to the existing hate crime, and communications legislation.
