Book Behind the Wall

Download or read book Behind the Wall written by Rich Wiles and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2010-02-28 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the approximately seven million Palestinian refugees around the world, more than 650,000 are living in camps along the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Having been forced from their homes, either through violence or the threat of it, those living in these camps, Rich Wiles asserts, suffer greatly from Israeli Army incursions, violence, poverty, and desperation—often even more severely than in the surrounding cities or villages. Although much media attention has been drawn to the area's political climate, the stories of its dispossessed people have gone largely underreported. Having spent much of his time in Palestine since 2003, Wiles offers a glimpse inside the West Bank's refugee camps between 2006 and 2007 through a collection of oral histories, vignettes, and photographic portraits. In these pieces, Wiles recounts conversations with Palestinians of all ages, including survivors of al-Nakba, released child and female prisoners, parents trying to rear their children amid the violence of military occupation, and exiles struggling for the right of return to their original villages. These intimate portrayals not only offer clues to understanding the physical and psychological effects of exile, colonization, and occupation, they also reveal the true Palestinian psyche, one that is at once full of life, love, and strength. Through both written word and photographic image, Behind the Wall allows Palestinians to speak for themselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wise, heartfelt, and compelling guide to our quest for wholeness in a broken world A Hidden Wholeness—now in its 20th Anniversary Edition, with a new Introduction by bestselling author Parker J. Palmer—has helped people in every walk of life rise to the challenge of living “divided no more.” What leads us to live divided lives that defy our own sense of identity and integrity? When we do, what price do we and the world pay? How can we recover the wholeness that is our birthright gift? Palmer examines the forces that deflect us from the soul's true north and gives us the tools we need to regain our bearings. Mapping an inner journey to be taken in solitude and community, Palmer explores perspectives and practices that can help us embody integrity in a world where it often feels risky to be who we are. As we learn how to be present to others in spaces where it's safe for the soul to speak (aka “circles of trust”), we find ways to rejoin soul and role in our personal, vocational, and public lives. Inspired by A Hidden Wholeness—and by the work of the Center for Courage & Renewal, a nonprofit Palmer founded in the late 1990s—tens of thousands of people have participated in circles of trust to deepen their sense of “true self” and contribute to the common good in the places where they live and work. To support readers in developing these practices, the book comes with an online “Study Guide for Readers and Group Leaders,” including author videos, available free at the Center's website. In the midst of our broken world, the principles and practices in this book can ground us in the “hidden wholeness,” giving us a place to stand as we seek to live with deeper integrity at every level of our lives.

Book The Grave on the Wall

Download or read book The Grave on the Wall written by Brandon Shimoda and published by City Lights Books. This book was released on 2018-07-23 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A memoir and book of mourning, a grandson’s attempt to reconcile his own uncontested citizenship with his grandfather’s lifelong struggle. A memoir and book of mourning, a grandson’s attempt to reconcile his own uncontested citizenship with his grandfather’s lifelong struggle. Award-winning poet Brandon Shimoda has crafted a lyrical portrait of his paternal grandfather, Midori Shimoda, whose life—child migrant, talented photographer, suspected enemy alien and spy, desert wanderer, American citizen—mirrors the arc of Japanese America in the twentieth century. In a series of pilgrimages, Shimoda records the search to find his grandfather, and unfolds, in the process, a moving elegy on memory and forgetting. Praise for The Grave on the Wall: "Shimoda brings his poetic lyricism to this moving and elegant memoir, the structure of which reflects the fragmentation of memories. … It is at once wistful and devastating to see Midori's life come full circle … In between is a life with tragedy, love, and the horrors unleashed by the atomic bomb."—Booklist, starred review "In a weaving meditation, Brandon Shimoda pens an elegant eulogy for his grandfather Midori, yet also for the living, we who survive on the margins of graveyards and rituals of our own making."—Karen Tei Yamashita, author of Letters to Memory "Sometimes a work of art functions as a dream. At other times, a work of art functions as a conscience. In the tradition of Juan Rulfo’s Pedro Páramo, Brandon Shimoda's The Grave on the Wall is both. It is also the type of fragmented reckoning only America could instigate."—Myriam Gurba, author of Mean “Within this haunted sepulcher built out of silence, loss, and grief—its walls shadowed by the traumas of racial oppression and violence—a green river lined with peach trees flows beneath a bridge that leads back to the grandson."—Jeffrey Yang, author of Hey, Marfa: Poems "It is part dream, part memory, part forgetting, part identity. It is a remarkable exploration of how citizenship is forged by the brutal US imperial forces—through slave labor, forced detention, indiscriminate bombing, historical amnesia and wall. If someone asked me, Where are you from? I would answer, From The Grave on the Wall."—Don Mee Choi, author of Hardly War "Shimoda intercedes into the absences, gaps and interstices of the present and delves the presence of mystery. This mystery is part of each of us. Shimoda outlines that mystery in silence and silhouette, in objects left behind at site-specific travels to Japan and in the disparate facts of his grandpa’s FBI file. Gratitude to Brandon Shimoda for taking on the mystery which only literature accepts as the basic challenge."—Sesshu Foster, author of City of the Future "Shimoda is a mystic writer … He puts what breaches itself (always) onto the page, so that the act of writing becomes akin to paper-making: an attention to fibers, coagulation, texture and the water-fire mixtures that signal irreversible alteration or change. … he has written a book that touches the bottom of my own soul."—Bhanu Kapil, author of Ban en Banlieue "The Grave on the Wall is a passage of aching nostalgia and relentless assembly out of which something more important than objective truth is conjured—a ritual frisson, a veracity of spirit. I am grateful to have traveled along.”—Trisha Low, The Believer

Friends and family saw only their imminent demise. Raccoons in a bedroom, bats in the attic, bones in the basement, a horrific ninety-day time frame. None of these were part of the plan. It turns into a harrowing, hilarious roller coaster of a ride. As the house endures monumental changes, the family must evolve as well. In slowing down, and appreciating their surroundings, they learn to wear lifes bruises proudly. Can a person still curl up with a book and make the world go away? Can readers laugh at someone elses failings, and determine that perhaps they can take a chance on change? Echoes in the Walls dares readers to do just that.

Book excerpt: Far From Simple: Life After Being “Not Your Average Teen” written by 20 year old Canadian author, Brittany Krystantos, recalls the ever-so common high school struggles with self identity, friendships and lack-thereof, popularity and stereotypes, and continues into young adulthood consisting of the terrible tinder dates including the time her date told her they'd have cute babies on their first date... run, oh yes! Britt shares with us her awful attempt at friends-with-benefits or should we say FWB, and heartbreak from the time her boyfriend broke up with her over text. Maybe, the heart healed from eating the entire jar of chocolate ice cream or maybe not; but it sure felt better in the moment. In this narrative nonfiction, she describes that "kind of girl" that is within all of us: ambitious, different, free spirited, wild, adventurous, yet innocent at the heart of things. She has gone through pain and hardship and dug her way out of the darkness to become enlightened by her soul’s calling; a life purpose to be different, and far from simple. 20 years of life, what up!

Book Classifying the Divine

Download or read book Classifying the Divine written by Racheli Shalomi-Hen and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2000 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, cognitive aspects of the Egyptian writing system were studied, and the importance of the determinatives as category makers and as a reflection of the ancient Egyptian mind, was re-alised. This study offers a fresh look at the divine determinatives and the category they form. It focuses on a group of five divine determinatives in Spell 335 of the Coffin Texts and Chapter 17 of the Book of the Dead. After discussing the transmission and themes of the texts as well as theories of categorisation, the author proceeds to analyse the 'divine category' which the five divine determinatives form. By identifying its prototypical members and by examining the relations between words and their divine determinatives, this book provides some crucial and thought provoking insights into the Ancient Egyptian perception of the divine, and is an important contribution to the understanding of the organisation of knowledge in general. The book concludes with a collation table that displays all the references to words written with divine determinatives in the texts, including hieroglyphic presentation of all the different variations of these words.

Book excerpt: For the first time, all five novels in the epic fantasy series that inspired HBO’s Game of Thrones are together in one eBook bundle. An immersive entertainment experience unlike any other, A Song of Ice and Fire has earned George R. R. Martin—dubbed “the American Tolkien” by Time magazine—international acclaim and millions of loyal readers. Now this bundle collects the entire monumental cycle in the most convenient format available: A GAME OF THRONES A CLASH OF KINGS A STORM OF SWORDS A FEAST FOR CROWS A DANCE WITH DRAGONS “One of the best series in the history of fantasy.”—Los Angeles Times Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King’s Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert’s name. There his family dwells in peace and comfort: his proud wife, Catelyn; his sons Robb, Brandon, and Rickon; his daughters Sansa and Arya; and his bastard son, Jon Snow. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse—unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances. Now Robert is riding north to Winterfell, bringing his queen, the lovely but cold Cersei, his son, the cruel, vainglorious Prince Joffrey, and the queen’s brothers Jaime and Tyrion of the powerful and wealthy House Lannister—the first a swordsman without equal, the second a dwarf whose stunted stature belies a brilliant mind. All are heading for Winterfell and a fateful encounter that will change the course of kingdoms. Meanwhile, across the Narrow Sea, Prince Viserys, heir of the fallen House Targaryen, which once ruled all of Westeros, schemes to reclaim the throne with an army of barbarian Dothraki—whose loyalty he will purchase in the only coin left to him: his beautiful yet innocent sister, Daenerys. “Long live George Martin . . . a literary dervish, enthralled by complicated characters and vivid language, and bursting with the wild vision of the very best tale tellers.”—The New York Times

Book The God Who Encourages

Download or read book The God Who Encourages written by The Evangelist and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2016-12-30 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The God Who Encourages The Evangelist In a world where troubles, disappointments, dangers, wars, and uncertainties is at an all-time high, many people may wonder, what's the use in believing on their fellow man or the hopes of dreaming of a better life on this earth or even if it's worth the effort. So many are ready to throw in the towel, maybe excepting the false fact that there is no good in the society of mankind, especially when our daily news broadcast in television, radio, and in newspapers reinforces the fears of the public, because very seldom do we hear good news. Taxes on the rise, war skirmishes, and mass killings, by some hate group or a mentally deranged person (the list goes on). These stresses only add to people's personal problems. This hopeless mental state can and oftentimes lead some people to some destructive ends, even contemplating suicide and some doing it. Thanks be to God that all hope is not lost, that there is a bright light at the end of the dark tunnel, and that after the storms of life, the sun, and the blue skies return. So there is a lot of good news for those of us who hold on trusting and believing in GOD and his precious promises. If we believe that the Old Testament was written for our learning, we see that GOD delivered Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Moses, just to name a few. How they had many trials and tribulations, and they all overcame their troubles by their faith in the one true GOD and his precious promises. So here in this work, The God Who Encourages, I would like to remind all who trust in GOD that his powers of deliverance has not changed (see James 1:17) as the scripture say he is the same Lord today, yesterday, and forever (see Hebrews 13:8).
