Book excerpt: Excerpt from To Greenland and the Pole: A Story of Adventure in the Arctic Regions Prefaces, like dentists, are sometimes necessary evils, and we have to bear with them, putting the best face on the matter that we possibly can. Now, in this preface I want only to tell you that, though in some parts sadness and grief creep into the pages of this book - towards the end, for this was inevitable - ou the whole, you will find little else save joy and jollity throughout. Nansen, the brave Arctic explorer-whom may God bring back from his daring venture - you will have no difficulty in recognizing as the prototype of my chief hero Reynolds. Rudland Syme is a Greenland surgeon sketched from life; Sigurd was also a real live sailor, and may be so still, for aught I know; while as for honest Joe the mate, he was a shipmate of my own during my first Arctic cruise, and a hearty happy-go-lucky fellow he was. We roughed it together years and years ago, in and on the Sea of Ice, in a way few are called upon to do nowadays. Let me say, further, that the description of the ice and ice adventures are mostly taken from journals of my own. But I must acknowledge my indebtedness to the First Crossing of Greenland (nansen), published by Messrs. Longmans, Green, Co., for my ideas on skilobning or snow-shoe travelling as carried out in Norway. I have not followed Nansen's route across the inland ice, however, for being a month earlier in the season I have taken my people farther north, and brought them out at Disko Bay. Book Exploring the North Pole The Story of Robert Edwin Peary and Matthew Henson

Download or read book Exploring the North Pole The Story of Robert Edwin Peary and Matthew Henson written by Josepha Sherman and published by Mitchell Lane Publishers, Inc.. This book was released on 2006-03 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arctic, the far, frozen north, can be a very dangerous place for people to visit. The Arctic is almost always bitter cold, with temperatures that can go far below –50ºF and be in total darkness for four months out of a year. Terrible storms sweep across the ice and snow, and great crevasses, perilous openings in the ice, can swallow the unlucky traveler. By the early 1900s, many expeditions had tried to reach the farthest point north, the North Pole, but all of them had failed. Many explorers had died. Tales spread that no one could reach the North Pole. They warned that the land was cursed. But in the early twentieth century, two men decided to brave the Arctic again. They were Americans Robert Peary and Matthew Henson. And they were determined to do what no one had ever done. They were going to reach the North Pole.

Book The Book of Truth a New Perspective on the Hopi Creation Story

Download or read book The Book of Truth a New Perspective on the Hopi Creation Story written by Thomas Mills and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2009-12 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas O. Mills befriended author Frank Waters, who in 1963 had written The Book of the Hopi with his Hopi informant Oswald White Bear Fredericks. Their book included the Hopi Creation Story. Mills listened, read and began to draw his own original and provocative conclusions. In his book, he seeks to track actual events and history that may be buried within it and how this could relate to our future. This book, drawing together a variety of ideas that are usually considered separately, makes stimulating reading and is good material for classroom discussions on history, race, Hopi culture, astronomy and "myth." Mills's intuitive vision should spur scientists to look more closely into what we like to call "myths" or "stories" for their possible basis in historical fact. And today, as we worry about climate change and what it means for the future, shouldn't we also be figuring out whether modern technology can prevent the earth's next rotational shake-up, and how we plan to survive it?
