Download or read book From Jerusalem to Beverly Hills written by Eitan Gonen and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a riveting story of the author's journey for survival as a war refugee and overcoming poverty. The story begins in Jerusalem as the British Empire crumbles and World War II ends. The ensuing turmoil in Palestine lead to Israel's War of Independence and the Arab siege of Jerusalem that shaped Eitan's childhood and the journey he travelled as a construction laborer, shepherd in a kibbutz, "Top Gun" fighter pilot in Israel Air Force, engineer for the Space Shuttle and a businessman in Beverly Hills. On his quest for independence and justice he endured family displacement, hunger, personal loss, and a government corruption scandal that nearly unraveled all he had worked to create. This compelling story, however, is ultimately one of triumph. Jerusalem, at once provincial and cosmopolitan, where lives of Christians, Jews and Arabs intermingle, is the colorful ground for a true story of a boy growing up during the tumultuous waning years of the British rule. The author describes scenes from the Arab-Israeli war, from a rare vantage point of a little boy, turned refugee in the ravaged city. As a teenager, he becomes a member of a socialist youth movement and joins his friends to establish a kibbutz. Toiling as a shepherd in the hills of Judea, and disappointed by the communal system, he leaves to join the Israel Air Force and becomes a fighter pilot. At the age of 22, he takes Dina, his wife, to Africa to create the newly independent Ghana Air Force. Fulfilling his lifelong dream, the author goes to America, but tragedy drives his young family back to Israel for eleven years. Following the Yom Kippur War, his keen sense of justice compels him to expose government corruption that inevitably teaches him that "no good deed goes unpunished," but at the end of the day makes him victorious. A memorable scene aboard an El Al flight provides an emotional end. Visit jerusalemtobeverlyhills.com

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A troubled Los Angeles socialite is both terrorized and tempted by a killer in this “brilliantly written” true story by the author of A Death in Canaan (Ann Rule). Hope Masters lived in one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Beverly Hills—but was entitled to food stamps. Pretty, petite, and privileged, she was recovering from two failed marriages and a string of poor decisions. But when Hope met and fell in love with a handsome advertising executive, she believed her life was finally back on track—until the morning she woke up to find the barrel of a gun in her mouth. Hope’s fiancé lay dead in the next room. His killer was a new acquaintance who’d been visiting the couple in a remote ranch in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. He claimed to be a journalist, but his real identity was as mysterious as his motivations. Even more bizarre, however, was what happened at the end of the long, nightmarish weekend in which Hope saw everything she cared about destroyed: She began to fall in love with her tormenter. A fascinating and frightening portrait of the power of evil to lead the most innocent of victims down the darkest of paths, A Death in California is “a first-rate piece of reporting” (Kirkus Reviews) on “one of the strangest cases in the annals of American crime” (The New York Times).

Download or read book The Construction of Masculinities and Femininities in Beverly Hills 90210 written by Justin Charlebois and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2012-08-10 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws on the concepts of hegemonic and nonhegemonic masculinities as well as emphasized and oppositional femininities to chronicle and illuminate the construction of gender in Beverly Hills, 90210. The book argues that not only delegitimized but also legitimated forms of masculinity and femininity require critical scrutiny and interrogation in order to expose the constructed nature of gender identities. Through an analysis of individual characters and specific episodes, the author demonstrates how the series presents certain characters as challenging normalized gender performances and the status quo. The program, however, ultimately reaffirms gender hegemony through portrayals of women and femininity as subordinate to men and masculinity. This book provides a sophisticated analysis of a popular series that established the teen television genre and thus serves as a cultural artifact.
