Download or read book Subs on the Hunt written by Richard Sheffield and published by Richard Sheffield. This book was released on 2009-05-12 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On December 7, 1941 the order was issued to the U.S. Navy: "EXECUTE UNRESTRICTED AIR AND SUBMARINE WARFARE AGAINST JAPAN" On that order, the subs flooded out of Pearl Harbor and towards the Japanese Empire. Those that returned came back with tales of unbelievable heroism, hard won victory, crushing defeats, faulty equipment, deadly mistakes, unexpected humor, and haunting decisions. Starting with the story of the brave little S-44 - It was very questionable as to whether or not she would even survive the crossing to Japanese waters. Despite the fact that she left a continuous oil slick wherever she went, she carried the fight to the enemy and sunk the 8800 ton Kato, the first Japanese warship to be sunk by a lone submarine. Continuing with stories from the Silversides, Wahoo, Trigger, Harder, Bowfin, and finishing with all five war patrols of the unmatched Tang, here are all the details and insights, straight from the men who fought the battles.
Download or read book Submarine Cables Protection and Regulations written by Utpal Kumar Raha and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-07 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the critical importance of laying, quick relinking, and protecting submarine cables with timely approval for carriers and cable repairing ships and how these are most challenging in many jurisdictions. It identifies that a dedicated national instrument on submarine cable as a way forward is yet to be appreciated by many States, and presently, there is no model legal framework for national instruments on submarine cables available. To bridge these gaps, the book undertakes a systematic inquiry and analysis of submarine cable regimes' and relevant authorities. It consults existing knowledge on international law on cables and analyzes specific principles and provisions on laying repair and maintenance of submarine cables and states’ obligations towards protecting cables from vulnerabilities. It touches upon cable regulation in the deep sea concerning the International Seabed Authority and proposed biodiversity agreement. It indicates suitable measures on cable laying, etc., and security risks in the marine space beyond the national jurisdictions. To map States’ response, it explores the domestic cable regimes, including both the selected jurisdictions and Australia and New Zealand, analyses specific legal provisions and institutional set-up, and demonstrates state practices, approaches, and loopholes in the governance of the cable system within national jurisdictions. The book suggests adopting the spatial ocean management approach, dedicated regulatory authority, a competent enforcement agency, strict liability with exemplary punishment on cable damage, and the cable system to strengthen the cable system's management. Finally, it arranges the fundamental premises of a common minimum framework for national instruments seeking coastal states’ deliberations in implementing initiatives towards a robust law and policy for reliability, resiliency, and security of the cable system. The cable industries, pipeline, fishing, shipping industries, academicians, government authorities, international bodies, and the maritime community worldwide are looking at the issues and challenges of submarine cable regimes, particularly national regimes and suggestive remedial measures. These stakeholders will find the book a useful reference.

Download or read book The Slovene Dialect of Resia San Giorgio written by Han Steenwijk and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1992 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study contains a synchronical description of the San Giorgio variety of the Slovene dialect spoken in the Resia valley (Val Resia/Rezijanska dolina) situated in north-eastern Italy. The following linguistic levels are analysed: phonology, morphonology and morphology. Apart from this some remarks on syntax and a lexicon have been included. The first chapter contains an overview of existing descriptive publications on Resian. Taking this overview as a starting point the choice of exactly the San Giorgio variety as the topic of this study is accounted for and the need for not only phonological, but also morphological analysis is made pointed out. The chapter further contains information on the native speakers whose speech is analysed and on the various methods used to obtain the dialect material. In the second chapter the phoneme inventory is presented, along with information on realisations, (optional) neutralisations and sandhi phenomena. Notwithstanding the considerable amount of phonetic detail given, the first and foremost aim of this chapter remains the quest for phonological oppositions and their functioning. In the third chapter the morphonological alternations that occur in the substantive, adjective and verb categories are being treated. Instead of dividing this information over the respective chapters on these categories, the alternations are presented together in a separate chapter, because some of the more frequent of them occur in all these word classes. However, through a classification by accent classes alternations concerning the location of stress are treated together with the word class they occur in. The third through seventh chapter inclusive contain the morphology of the substantive (chapter 4), the adjective (chapter 5), the pronoun, the numeral and the article (chapter 6) and the verb (chapter 7), respectively. In each chapter, together with an inventory of the attested desinences, an overview is given of rare desinences, of irregular declinations/conjugations and of the distribution of alternative desinences.
