Traveling with a study group from Dallas Theological Seminary, this Maine pastor finally gets to experience the biblical places and times he has imagined since childhood and has studied and taught throughout his adult years. Pastor Blackstone shares insights and highlights from this thirty-year dream, joined by his daughter Marnie, the heroine of two previous books, Rendezvous in Paris and Though One Go with Me. Travel with this father-daughter team from the slopes of Mount Hermon in the north to the shores of the Red Sea in the south on this spectacular pilgrimage to the Holy Land of Israel. Journey from the modern city of Tel Aviv in the west to the ancient city of Jericho in the east to explore the biblical people and places that make this land unique. Experience picking five stones from the stream in Elah like David, witness the beauty of the Jezreel Valley from the top of Mount Carmel as Elijah did, climb Masada, and stand on Mount Moriah where the Jerusalem temple once stood. Swim in the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea, drink water from the spring where Gideon tested his famous band of three hundred, wade the waters of the Gihon Spring through Hezekiah's Tunnel, and wander the shores of the Mediterranean Sea at Caesarea. Visit the ancient cities of Nazareth, Capernaum, Bethlehem, Chorazin, Bethsaida, Megiddo, Caesarea Philippi, and of course, Dan and Beersheba. If you have ever wanted to make this spiritual journey, From Dan to Beersheba and Beyond will whet your appetite for your own biblical adventure.

Dever offers a welcome perspective on ancient Israel and Judah that prioritizes the archaeological remains to render history as it was—not as the biblical writers argue it should have been. Drawing from the most recent archaeological data as interpreted from a nontheological point of view and supplementing that data with biblical material only when it converges with the archaeological record, Dever analyzes all the evidence at hand to provide a new history of ancient Israel and Judah that is accessible to all interested readers. Book Beyond Sambation

Download or read book Beyond Sambation written by A.M. Klein and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1982-12-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The broad range of A.M. Klein’s interests, ideas, and activities is reflected in this selection of articles, editorials, and reviews – a selection that also displays the qualities that distinguished all his creative writing and the highly idiosyncratic nature of his style. The writings in this volume span a most critical juncture in human affairs; a period that witnessed the Great Depression, the rise of fascism, Nazism, and communism, the Second World War, and the emergence of the State of Israel. As a journalist, Klein did more than record the events – he gave expression to the feelings of his people and helped shape their responses. His wide reading, sensitivity, and intelligence made him a perceptive observer and keen analyst, while his command of language, his passion, rhetoric, and wit, made him an eloquent spokesman. These qualities enabled him to carry out the responsibilities, as he saw them, of chronicler and champion. Though Klein’s major concern was with the Canadian Jewish scene, his interests were part of the mosaic of Canadian history and his work forms a chronicle and a commentary on events of world-wide significance. Klein’s journalism relates frequently, in both substance and language, to his poems and fiction, and thus provides a context for the study of his creative writing. It also reveals aspects of his personality, values, and commitments, contributing to our understanding and appreciation of one of Canada’s foremost writers.

  • ISBN : 0595371442
  • Pages : 278 pages

Download or read book Beyond the Tombs written by David Kolzion and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-11 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having been but a tiny piece of 'rock', taken out of all sorts of men's 'paradises' to be hewn by my YHVH-God's fingers under his Sovereign Rulership, I was taught lots of things during my three-and-a-half-year stay on Pulau Galang-the Blue Paradise's Gate. Beyond the Tombs is a three-book compilation of previous works from author David Kolzion, a former university lecturer in Vietnam. A refugee from Vietnam and Indonesia, Kolzion came to Australia in 1993. The Voice of God's Rock tells of his thirty-year spiritual journey that spans three countries of refuge from 1975-2005. His unforgettable autobiography, Memoir 1975-2005, is full of intriguing and historical details from the last thirty years of his life. Kolzion's As the Wind Blowing forms an appropriate closure in this postmodern world of political intrigue, military violence, and global terrorism. Beyond the Tombs combines all three books and becomes a spiritual concerto to those children "risen out of rocks for Abraham". For over twelve years, Kolzion has intensely studied the ancient Hebrew scriptures and offers his wisdom to enlighten those hungry for fulfillment.

Book Beyond the Basilica

  • Author : Chad F. Emmett
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 1995-02-07
  • ISBN : 9780226207117
  • Pages : 332 pages

Download or read book Beyond the Basilica written by Chad F. Emmett and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1995-02-07 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nazareth, the largest Arab city in Israel, is a surprising example of ethnic harmony in a region dominated by conflict. A recent trend toward integration of its historical Greek Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Muslim quarters however, has disrupted the harmony. In Beyond the Basilica: Christians and Muslims in Nazareth, Chad F. Emmett provides penetrating analysis of the complex relationship between the structure of Nazareth’s quarters and the relations between its ethnic communities. Emmett describes both the positive and negative effects of Nazareth’s residential patterns. He shows that the addition of new and ethnically mixed quarters has promoted mixed schools, joint holiday celebrations, a common political culture, and social networks that cross ethnic boundaries. But he also finds that tensions exist among Christian groups and between Muslims and Christians in regard to intersectarian marriages, religious conversion, attempts to establish a joint Christian cemetery, and the emergence of a local Islamic party. Extensive interviews with leaders of religious groups, political parties, and residents reveal the way in which members of each ethnic community perceive one another. A survey of 300 families gives a wealth of details about the make-up of Nazareth’s population, including residential histories, religion, level of religious conviction, friendship and shopping patterns, and much more. Fourteen maps trace changes in the distribution of religious groups and political affiliation in Nazareth from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. Beyond the Basilica will interest cultural geographers, historians, demographers, political scientists, and anyone who would like to learn more about an ethnically divided community in the residents cooperate more than they fight.

Book The Land Beyond

Download or read book The Land Beyond written by Leon McCarron and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-08-06 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the Adventure Travel Book of the Year at the Edward Stanford Travel Writing Awards. There are many reasons why it might seem unwise to walk, mostly alone, through the Middle East. That, in part, is exactly why Leon McCarron did it. From Jerusalem, McCarron followed a series of wild hiking trails that trace ancient trading and pilgrimage routes and traverse some of the most contested landscapes in the world. In the West Bank, he met families struggling to lead normal lives amidst political turmoil and had a surreal encounter with the world's oldest and smallest religious sect. In Jordan, he visited the ruins of Hellenic citadels and trekked through the legendary Wadi Rum. His journey culminated in the vast deserts of the Sinai, home to Bedouin tribes and haunted by the ghosts of Biblical history. The Land Beyond is a journey through time, from the quagmire of current geopolitics to the original ideals of the faithful, through the layers of history, culture and religion that have shaped the Holy Land. But at its heart, it is the story of people, not politics and of the connections that can bridge seemingly insurmountable barriers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To reach beyond the breach means to look beyond the trouble in your life by faith. In Hebrews 11:1, it says, "Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see." For example, a breach could be anything that comes against you. It may have happened six months ago; nevertheless, I'm hoping for what hasn't happened, and I'm sure that it will be manifested in my life. Therefore, I look beyond what the situation looks like and call those things that be not as though I already have it. Two years ago, I was diagnosed with melanoma cancer of the eye. That is a scary breach. Nevertheless, I put my trust and faith in God that my healing is already done according to his Word in 1 Peter 2:24. I encourage anyone who has a breach in your life to find the promise in God's Word and speak it daily and you will have what you say by your faith.
