Book TO BE TO THINK TO LOVE TO DO Meister Eckhart ethics for your life

Download or read book TO BE TO THINK TO LOVE TO DO Meister Eckhart ethics for your life written by Claudia Daneu and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To live has never been easy. Thus ethics is born as the art of being, thinking, loving and doing. Meister Eckhart ́s teachings reveal a concept of duty absolutely different from the current concept, and even from the concept of duty in most systems throughout the history of philosophy. In his view, duty is moved by freedom and pure love toward God, the human race and the world. Freedom and love are the most powerful tools to think, decide, and act with, at any time in lifetime, in all respects. The deepest comprehension of one ́s own story is fundamental, and Meister Eckhart also explains how to transfigure suffering and take consolation from it. In the eckhartian ethics all events and things find their meaning within the greatest unity of sense, where God ́s will and man ́s will interact unceasingly. Meister Eckhart discovers the divine uncreated essence deeply concealed in man ́s nature. But to follow this way will imply the acceptance, the disposition, and the personal effort on your part.

Book excerpt: Though he lived in the thirteenth century, Meister Eckhart’s deeply ecumenical teachings were in many ways modern. He taught about what we call ecology, championed artistic creativity, and advocated for social, economic, and gender justice. All these elements have inspired spiritual maverick Matthew Fox and influenced his Creation Spirituality. Here, Fox creates metaphorical meetings between Eckhart and Teilhard de Chardin, Thich Nhat Hanh, Carl Jung, Black Elk, Rumi, Adrienne Rich, and other radical thinkers. The result is profoundly insightful, substantive, and inspiring.

Ancient philosophy has inspired modern communities — Socratic cafés, Stoic armies, Epicurean communes — and even whole nations in the quest for the good life. Book The Question of the Other

Download or read book The Question of the Other written by Arleen B. Dallery and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The core source of this book is the work of Emmanuel Levinas. Beginning with a chapter on speaking and the other, three lead chapters focus on Levinas' account of the face of the other. These chapters are followed by explorations of the ethics of dissemination in Derrida, the freedom of the other in Sartre, the cultural other in Husserlian phenomenology, the other as sexual difference in Irigaray and Nietzsche, the sublime in aesthetics, and the deconstruction of the primacy of the ego in Foucault and Lacan. This book is especially relevant to feminist theory. It shows that postmodern, continental philosophy does indeed have ethical implications. The question of the other or the presence of the other undercuts the foundationalist starting points of ethical theory and epistemology. The Question of the Other presents fresh and original interpretations of Husserl, Nietzsche, Derrida, Levinas, Irigaray, Foucault, Lacan, Heidegger, and Sartre.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text is a reflection on the meaning of spiritual darkness - especially those difficult places in human experience where meaning seems to elude us, where we are emptied out and are compelled to dig deeper into who we truly are. Douglas E. Christie takes up this facet of experience, in ordinary human experience, but also in relation to the Christian contemplative and mystical traditions, where such experience is often understood to be both painful and transformative, allowing the mind and heart to open in love.

Book Meister Eckhart

Download or read book Meister Eckhart written by Hee-Sung Keel and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meister Eckhart (1260?-1328) is undoubtedly the most important thinker in the West for drawing the spiritual heritage of Christian mysticism close to the monistic spirit that infuses so much of Asian religious thought. His vision of the unio mystica of God and the soul as a perfect unity goes far beyond the conventional mysticism of love that was dominant before him. Eckhart's "mysticism of unity," a bold and revolutionary affirmation of a perfect divine-human unity realized in the ground of the soul, as well as the mystical atheism it gave rise to, inspired a wealth of profound spiritual insights that continue to challenge the reader of his sermons today. Without neglecting other aspects of Eckhart's mystical thought that are not easily reconciled with this radical vision of divine-human unity, the author takes a careful look at the nature of the Dominican master's mysticism, its philosophical background, and its implications for ethics and secular religiosity, drawing particular attention to its role in the East-West religious dialogue and the shaping of a vision of the spiritual unity of humankind. Book Transforming Enterprise

Download or read book Transforming Enterprise written by Andrew Yancey and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-03-25 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does Christian faith integrate with capitalism? This question has been at the heart of Christian ethics for more than three hundred years, but rarely as complex and important as now. The polarizing influence of consumer capitalism has extended into virtually every domain of human life. On the one hand, capitalism has contributed to increases in standards of living and life expectancy, especially among those in extreme poverty. On the other, it has exacerbated income inequality, environmental damages, and social displacement. For contemporary American evangelical theology, this is problematic. It has long been on a quest to show that Christian faith harmonizes with capitalistic enterprise. But can faith harness the transformational power of consumer capitalism without being affected by its excesses? For many, the election of Donald Trump as president has revealed a great divide within American evangelicalism about the links between Christianity, economic power, and moral character. Working from the field of academic practical theology in interdisciplinary dialogue with business management ethics, Transforming Enterprise? shows why and how a reframing of the relationship between Christian faith and capitalistic enterprise is needed in the contemporary postsecular milieu.

Book Meister Eckhart s Book of the Heart

Download or read book Meister Eckhart s Book of the Heart written by Jon M. Sweeney and published by Red Wheel/Weiser. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meister Eckhart (1260 -1328) was a priest, a mystic, and nearly a heretic (he died before the Church court's verdict). In the 20th century, the Roman Catholic Church rehabilitated him and the late Pope John Paul II spoke of his work with fondness. However, what makes him of particular interest is the fact that he has influenced a wide range of spiritual teachers and mystics both inside and outside the Christian tradition. Erich Fromm, Eckhart Tolle, Richard Rohr, D. T. Suzuki, and Rudolf Steiner have all credited Eckhart as being an important influence on their thought. In addition, his work has influenced the development of 20th century American Buddhism and the Theosophical tradition. Eckhart wrote at a time - much like our own - when society appeared to be coming apart at the seams. In the midst of all that chaos and uncertainty, he captured the many forms and stages of the love of God, the mystic path, and the journey of transformation - in language so startling that he, too, was often accused of heresy. Now, seven centuries later, this fresh, stunning rendering of his work translates the essence of one of Christianity's greatest poetic and spiritual voices. Here is a book that conveys the heart of Eckhart's teaching on what it means to love God and embark on an authentic spiritual journey - a journey that is characterized by mystery, paradox, and an embrace of the unknown.

Book excerpt: The author of Original Blessing explores how the highest communion with the Divine can be found right at our fingertips in the simplest expressions of human creativity. Drawn from a sermon that has electrified listeners, here is a concise, powerful meditation on the nature of creativity from Episcopal priest and radical theologian Matthew Fox. Creativity is Fox at his most dynamic: It is immensely practical and leaves the reader with a message to put into action in life. Fox tantalizingly suggests that the most prayerful, most spiritually powerful act a person can undertake is to create, at his or her own level, with a consciousness of the place from which that gift arises.

Book Leadership in Congregations

Download or read book Leadership in Congregations written by Richard Bass and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2006-12-31 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new book in Alban's Harvesting the Learnings Series gathers the collected wisdom of over 10 years of Alban research and reflection on what it means to be a leader in a congregation, how our perceptions of leadership are changing, and exciting new directions for leadership in the future. With pieces by such diverse church leaders as Graham Standish, Diana Butler Bass, Jeffrey Jones, Donna Schaper, Gil Rendle, Ann Svennungsen, Mark Lau Branson, and many others, this volume gathers in one place a variety of essays that approach the leadership task and challenge with insight, depth, humor, and imagination. The book also includes the full text of Alban's 2001 special report, "The Leadership Situation Facing American Congregations" by James P. Wind and Gil Rendle. That report examined the evidence for turmoil on the one hand and ferment on the other. The Alban Institute, it declared, stood on the side of ferment. To live into the ferment, we need to see leadership in new ways and learn a new set of adaptive skills that allow them to shape new patterns of congregational life and new leadership roles. Based in research and experience, this volume makes available the best of Alban's learning on how the leaders of congregations can go about this important work.

Book The Self Emptying Subject

Download or read book The Self Emptying Subject written by Alex Dubilet and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2018-04-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against the two dominant ethical paradigms of continental philosophy–Emmanuel Levinas’s ethics of the Other and Michel Foucault’s ethics of self-cultivation—The Self-Emptying Subject theorizes an ethics of self-emptying, or kenosis, that reveals the immanence of an impersonal and dispossessed life “without a why.” Rather than aligning immanence with the enclosures of the subject, The Self-Emptying Subject engages the history of Christian mystical theology, modern philosophy, and contemporary theories of the subject to rethink immanence as what precedes and exceeds the very difference between the (human) self and the (divine) other, between the subject and transcendence. By arguing that transcendence operates and subjects life in secular no less than in religious domains, this book challenges the dominant distribution of concepts in contemporary theoretical discourse, which insists on associating transcendence exclusively with religion and theology and immanence exclusively with modern secularity and philosophy. The Self-Emptying Subject argues that it is important to resist framing the relationship between medieval theology and modern philosophy as a transition from the affirmation of divine transcendence to the establishment of autonomous subjects. Through an engagement with Meister Eckhart, G.W.F. Hegel, and Georges Bataille, it uncovers a medieval theological discourse that rejects the primacy of pious subjects and the transcendence of God (Eckhart); retrieves a modern philosophical discourse that critiques the creation of self-standing subjects through a speculative re-writing of the concepts of Christian theology (Hegel); and explores a discursive site that demonstrates the subjecting effects of transcendence across theological and philosophical operations and archives (Bataille). Taken together, these interpretations suggest that if we suspend the antagonistic relationship between theological and philosophical discourses, and decenter our periodizing assumptions and practices, we might encounter a yet unmapped theoretical fecundity of self-emptying that frees life from transcendent powers that incessantly subject it for their own ends.
