Book excerpt: Not ever content, Edward struggled to acknowledge why a lot of things happened to him. He struggled to understand why he was still single and living at home with his parents, at the age of forty. He struggled to understand why he wasn't settled down with a beautiful wife and children. He believed that he had everything a woman could want from a man but did not recognize why he was still alone. Every day, he would hustle hard on solid streets, to come home to a cold and empty bed. Sometimes he'd look at his parents and get angry with himself because he did not have what they had. At times he'd even isolate himself, just to be even more alone, alone with his thoughts. But did he ever grow up? Did he ever stop acting as if he was new to money?

This book was released on 2020-10-26 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of the book is to allocate the grass roots initiatives of remembering the Holocaust victims in a particular region of Russia which has a very diverse ethnic structure and little presence of Jews at the same time. It aims to find out how such individual initiatives correspond to the official Russian hero-orientated concept of remembering the Second World war with almost no attention to the memory of war victims, including Holocaust victims. North Caucasus became the last address of thousands of Soviet Jews, both evacuees and locals. While there was almost no attention paid to the Holocaust victims in the official Soviet propaganda in the postwar period, local activists and historians together with the members of Jewish communities preserved Holocaust memory by installing small obelisks at the killing sites, writing novels and making documentaries, teaching about the Holocaust at schools and making small thematic exhibitions in the local and school museums. Individual types of grass roots activities in the region on remembering Holocaust victims are analyzed in each chapter of the book.

Download or read book Time in Action written by Carla Bagnoli and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-24 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the role of time in rational agency and practical reasoning. Agents are finite and often operate under severe time constraints. Action takes time and unfolds in time. While time is an ineliminable constituent of our experience of agency, it is both a theoretical and a practical problem to explain whether and how time shapes rational agency and practical thought. The essays in this book are divided into three parts. Part I is devoted to the temporal structure of action and agency, from metaphysical and metaethical perspectives. Part II features essays about the temporal structure of rational deliberation, from the perspective of action theory and theories of practical reasoning. Part III includes essays about the temporal aspects of failures of rationality. Taken together, the essays in this book shed new light on our understanding of the temporality of agency that coheres with our subjective sense of finitude and explains rational agency both in time and over time. Time in Action will be of interest to advanced students and researchers working on the philosophy of time, metaphysics of action, action theory, practical reasoning, ethical theory, moral psychology, and rational justification.

Download or read book Paving the Great Way written by Jonathan Gold and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-11-18 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indian Buddhist philosopher Vasubandhu (fourthÐfifth century C.E.) is known for his critical contribution to Buddhist Abhidharma thought, his turn to the Mahayana tradition, and his concise, influential Yogacara-Vijanavada texts. Paving the Great Way reveals another dimension of his legacy: his integration of several seemingly incompatible intellectual and scriptural traditions, with far-ranging consequences for the development of Buddhist epistemology and the theorization of tantra. Most scholars read VasubandhuÕs texts in isolation and separate his intellectual development into distinct phases. Featuring close studies of VasubandhuÕs Abhidharmakosabhasya, Vyakhyayukti, Vimsatika, and Trisvabhavanirdesa, among other works, this book identifies recurrent treatments of causality and scriptural interpretation that unify distinct strands of thought under a single, coherent Buddhist philosophy. In VasubandhuÕs hands, the BuddhaÕs rejection of the self as a false construction provides a framework through which to clarify problematic philosophical issues, such as the nature of moral agency and subjectivity under a broadly causal worldview. Recognizing this continuity of purpose across VasubandhuÕs diverse corpus recasts the interests of the philosopher and his truly innovative vision, which influenced Buddhist thought for a millennium and continues to resonate with todayÕs philosophical issues. An appendix includes extensive English-language translations of the major texts discussed.
