This book was released on 2013-05-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 105-mm M2A1 Howitzer was the standard light field artillery piece for the United States in World War II, seeing action in both the European and Pacific theaters. Starting production in 1941, it quickly entered the war against the Imperial Japanese Army in the Pacific, where it gained a reputation for its accuracy and powerful punch. The M2A1 fired 105-mm high explosive (HE) semi-fixed ammunition and had a range of 11,270 meters, making it suitable for supporting infantry. All of these qualities of the weapon, along with its widespread production, led to its adoption by many countries after the war. Its ammunition type also became the standard for many foreign countries' later models. In 1962, the artillery designation system was changed and the 105-mm M2A1 Howitzer became the M101A1. It continued to see service in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Today, the M101A1 has been retired by the U.S. military, though it continues to see service with many other countries. Created in 1948, this technical manual reveals a great deal about the M2A1 Howitzer's design and capabilities. Intended as a manual for those charged with operation and maintenance, it details many aspects of its firing, recoil and other mechanisms. Originally labeled restricted, this manual was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form. Care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.

Download or read book Tanks 76 MM Gun M41 and M41a1 Walker Bulldog FM 17 80 written by Department of the Army and published by Periscope Film LLC. This book was released on 2013-10 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The M41 Walker Bulldog was a U.S. light tank developed to replace the M24 Chaffee. While the M24 Chaffee was a successful design, its main gun was not effective enough against well armored opposition. Although the primary mission of a light tank was scouting, the U.S. Army wanted one with more powerful armament. The development of the new tank, T37, began in 1947. The vehicle was designed to be air-transportable, and the desired anti-tank capabilities were provided by installing a long 76-mm gun with an advanced rangefinder. In 1949, with the adoption of a less ambitious rangefinder, the project's designation was changed to T41. Production started in 1951 at Cadillac's Cleveland Tank Plant, and by 1953 the tank replaced the M24 in the United States Army. Initially the M41 was nicknamed "Little Bulldog," then renamed "Walker Bulldog" after General Walton Walker, who was killed in a jeep accident in Korea in 1950. The Walker Bulldog saw limited combat with the U.S. Army during the Korean War, but for the most part, the conflict served as a testing ground to work out the tank's rangefinder. In 1954, the M41A1 variant was produced with a hydraulic turret traverse instead of an electrical one. The more compact system allowed for increased ammunition. Created in 1956, this field manual reveals a great deal about the M41 and M41A1's design and capabilities. Intended as a manual for those charged with operation and maintenance, it details the sighting equipment, crew formations, firing duties and more. Originally labeled restricted, this manual was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form. Care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.

Download or read book M24 Chaffee Light Tank Technical Manual TM 9 729 written by Department of the Army and published by Periscope Film LLC. This book was released on 2013-08 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Light Tank M24 was an American tank used during the later part of World War II and in postwar conflicts including the Korean War and, with the French, in the War in Algeria and the First Indochina War. In British service it was given the service name Chaffee, after the United States Army General Adna R. Chaffee, Jr., who helped develop the use of tanks in the United States armed forces. In April 1943, the Ordnance Corps, together with Cadillac division of General Motors, started work on the new project, designated Light Tank T24. Every effort was made to keep the weight of the vehicle under twenty tons. The armor was kept light, with the glacis plate only twenty five mm thick (but sloped at sixty degrees from the vertical). A new lightweight 75 mm gun was developed, a derivative of the gun used in the B-25H Mitchell bomber. The gun had the same ballistics as the M3, but used a thinly walled barrel and different recoil mechanism. The design also featured wider (sixteen inch) tracks and torsion bar suspension. It had a relatively low silhouette and a three-man turret. On October 15, 1943 the first pilot vehicle was delivered and production began in 1944 under the designation Light Tank M24. By the time production was stopped in August 1945, 4,731 M24s had left the assembly lines. Created in 1951, this technical manual reveals a great deal about the Chaffee's design and capabilities. Intended as a manual for those charged with operation and maintenance, it details many aspects of its engine, cooling, power and other systems. Originally labeled restricted, this manual was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form. Care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.
