Yet contemporaries often held the “minor” arts—gem-studded goldwork, richly embellished armor, splendid tapestries and embroideries, music, and ephemeral multi-media spectacles—in much higher esteem. Isabella d’Este, Marchesa of Mantua, was typical of the Italian nobility: she bequeathed to her children precious stone vases mounted in gold, engraved gems, ivories, and antique bronzes and marbles; her favorite ladies-in-waiting, by contrast, received mere paintings. Renaissance patrons and observers extolled finely wrought luxury artifacts for their exquisite craftsmanship and the symbolic capital of their components; paintings and sculptures in modest materials, although discussed by some literati, were of lesser consequence. This book endeavors to return to the mainstream material long marginalized as a result of historical and ideological biases of the intervening centuries. The author analyzes how luxury arts went from being lofty markers of ascendancy and discernment in the Renaissance to being dismissed as “decorative” or “minor” arts—extravagant trinkets of the rich unworthy of the status of Art. Book excerpt: Throughout this work, I examine the nuptial symbols in Titian's poetical-mythological paintings for his patron Duke Alfonso I d'Este (b1486-d1534) through the framework of emotional theory developed by Barbara H. Rosenwein, who is a leading historian of emotional history specializing in the Middle Ages. The nuptial imagery represents marital love as a combination of sexual desire and emotional companionship. In Titian's Bacchus and Ariadne , the indirect Christian allusions parallel the marriage of Bacchus and Ariadne to the allegorical marriage of Mary and Christ, suggesting that the painting also functions as an allegory representing an ethical ideal for ducal marriages. The model of emotional theory I am adopting proposes that an emotional community determines which emotions it finds valuable or harmful to the goals the group wants for itself (Rosenwein 2007, 14). According to Rosenwein, the set of emotions that are emphasized is a judgment based on a person's past experiences, present values, goals, and his or her sense of right and wrong (Rosenwein 2007, 14). In the work under examination, we see marriage redefined in such a way that stresses the value of producing legitimate offspring within marriage. Further, the painting also serves to instruct the viewer on the affective dimensions of the marriage contract. The new conception of marriage emphasizes the individual's ability to regulate his or her humoral-based notion of passions and to direct sexual desire to an emotional bond with one's partner. The image of marital love reflects Christian and humanist values, resulting in an idealization of the prince as a wise and pious ruler, husband, and father. In a system of arranged marriages, the larger question is how one commands oneself to feel physically attracted or emotionally attached to a spouse not of one's choosing. Rosenwein proposes the idea that people move from one emotional group to another, demonstrating adaptability to different sorts of emotional conventions (Rosenwein 2007, 25). Although Alfonso's third marriage could have been to a high-born woman, he instead chose his favorite mistress, Laura Eustochia Diante, who provided an alternative set of emotional norms that broke from the emotional and social conventions imposed by family and dynastic marriage practices.

Ideology, Practice, and Criticism focuses on the unique nature of early modern Bolognese painting that found its expression in stylistic diversity. The flourishing of different stylistic approaches in the Mannerist paintings of the previous generation evolved, at the turn the seventeenth century, in the work of the Bolognese painters into an approach best described as eclecticism, characterized by the combination of two or more styles in a single work of art. Eclectism was a major innovation and major contribution to the history of art. But it then also became a critical term that suffered much negative press. The book therefore also traces the role of ecclecticism as a concept in the evolution of criticism and scholarship about the Bolognese school of painting over 250 years, showing how the dramatically vacillating attitudes towards this concept shaped the historical view of the Bolognese painters, ultimately having a tremendous dampening impact on our understanding of seventeenth-century art.
