Book Titanic Gods of Tamil Nadu India

Download or read book Titanic Gods of Tamil Nadu India written by S Sugumaran and published by . This book was released on 2021-04-29 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Greeks introduced the Titans to the world. Yet, there never was (or is) a temple for the Titanic Gods in Greece. Surprising isn't it? At the same time, the readers will find more than one temple for most of the Titans in Tamil Nadu. The author takes the readers into a journey of the world of Titans in a strange land. Is not this perplexing? A shocking revelation is the Greek Olympians forming a core of divinity in Tamil Nadu. No explanation is provided for this by the author, though. The genealogy of Gods in Tamil Nadu (evidently drawn from the Greek Texts) provides a solid relationship between the seemingly unrelated Gods In India. Sometimes, a female Greek Goddess is transformed into a male Hindu God. A genealogy of Asuras is also provided to scientifically explain some of the events in the Puranas. This lead the author, a known Euhemerist, to deviate a little from the original texts of Puranas wherever it was necessary. The author, a devout Hindu, firmly believes the Epics and Puranas of Hinduism are very real. A special care has been taken to explain the nature of the birth and worship of Ganesha and Murugan in Tamil Nadu. It is thought the readers are in for a shock or two while reading the stories. And also, a real suspense hangs in the balance regarding the stories of ancient Tamil Sangams, the Sptarishis, the Chera, Chola, Pandiya dynasties of Tamil Nadu. For the author, it was a wonderful experience and a great pleasure to write about the Gods and their age old temples in Tamil Nadu.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of one of the most persistent and popular gods in south India and traces the history of the god, dwelling especially on four periods: The earliest known Tamil civilization as portrayed in classical Tamil literature and archaeology; The Northern Epic period as depicted in Epic mythology; the Medieval South as depicted in the iconography and literature of the period; and contemporary Tamil Nadu as expressed in the ritual life of the cultus. In each period, an attempt is made to explore the cultural dynamics and symbolic meanings of the deity's mythology and cultic life. The god's development includes stages in which he is a lord of hill and hunt in the Early South; a deity who serves as prototype for both Ksatriya and brahmana communities in the Epic North; a god who serves as purveyor of Saiva Siddhanta thought and inspiration of Tamil literature in the Medieval South; and a `high god' who epitomizes the fullness of regional pride and religious aspiration in contemporary Tamil India. As one of the most popular deities in Tamil India today, Murukan is a particularly apt portrait of how a contemporary people in Asia find identity and meaning through traditional symbols. Murukan's history and meaning combines themes which are classical and `popular,' `Sanskrit' and `Tamil,' traditional and `modern,' Vaisnava and Saiva. That people of differing walks of life have perceived him in varying, yet consistent, ways even into the present moment makes the cultus of Murukan a fascinating example of man's persisting quest for meaning and fulfillment.

Book Olympus

  • Author : Devdutt Pattanaik
  • Publisher : Random House India
  • Release : 2016-09-20
  • ISBN : 9385990195

Download or read book Olympus written by Devdutt Pattanaik and published by Random House India. This book was released on 2016-09-20 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: • Olympus is the home of the Greek gods, much like Amravati of the Hindu devas. • Zeus, leader of Olympians, wields a thunderbolt like Indra, and rides an eagle like Vishnu. • The feats of the Greek hero Heracles, known to Romans as Hercules, reminded many of Krishna, as did his name, ‘Hari-kula-esha’ or lord of the Hari clan. • The Greek epic of a husband sailing across the sea with a thousand ships to bring his wife, Helen, back from Troy seems strikingly similar to the story of Ram rescuing Sita from Lanka. Is there a connection between Greek and Hindu mythology then? Does it have something to do with a common Indo-European root? Or maybe an exchange of ideas in the centuries that followed the arrival of Alexander the Great, when Greek emissaries travelled to the kingdoms of Mathura and Magadha? In this book, mythologist Devdutt Pattanaik turns his attention to ancient Greek tales, and explores a new world of stories. Long have Europeans and Americans retold Indic mythologies. It is time for Indians to reverse the gaze.
