Book Percy Jackson s Greek Gods

Download or read book Percy Jackson s Greek Gods written by Rick Riordan and published by Disney Electronic Content. This book was released on 2014-08-19 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A publisher in New York asked me to write down what I know about the Greek gods, and I was like, Can we do this anonymously? Because I don't need the Olympians mad at me again. But if it helps you to know your Greek gods, and survive an encounter with them if they ever show up in your face, then I guess writing all this down will be my good deed for the week." So begins Percy Jackson's Greek Gods, in which the son of Poseidon adds his own magic--and sarcastic asides--to the classics. He explains how the world was created, then gives readers his personal take on a who's who of ancients, from Apollo to Zeus. Percy does not hold back. "If you like horror shows, blood baths, lying, stealing, backstabbing, and cannibalism, then read on, because it definitely was a Golden Age for all that." Dramatic full-color illustrations throughout by Caldecott Honoree John Rocco make this volume--a must for home, library, and classroom shelves--as stunning as it is entertaining.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representatives of several scientific communities, such as planetary scientists, astronomers, space physicists, chemists and astrobiologists have met with the aim to review the knowledge on four major themes: (1) the study of the formation and evolution processes of the outer planets and their satellites, beginning with the formation of compounds and planetesimals in the solar nebula, and the subsequent evolution of the interiors of the outer planets, (2) a comparative study of the atmospheres of the outer planets and Titan, (3) the study of the planetary magnetospheres and their interactions with the solar wind, and (4) the formation and properties of satellites and rings, including their interiors, surfaces, and their interaction with the solar wind and the magnetospheres of the outer planets. Beyond these topics, the implications for the prebiotic chemical evolution on Europa and Titan are reviewed. At the time of publication, the study of the outer planets is particularly motivated by the fact that the Saturn system is being investigated by the Cassini-Huygens mission.

  • Author : Paul A. C. Koistinen
  • Publisher : University Press of Kansas
  • Release : 1998-06-19
  • ISBN : 0700621156
  • Pages : 452 pages

Download or read book Planning War Pursuing Peace written by Paul A. C. Koistinen and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 1998-06-19 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years following World War I, America's armed services, industry, and government took lessons from that conflict to enhance the country's ability to mobilize for war. Paul Koistinen examines how today's military-industrial state emerged during that period-a time when the army and navy embraced their increasing reliance on industry, and business accelerated its efforts to prepare the country for future wars. Planning War, Pursuing Peace is the third of an extraordinary five-volume study on the political economy of American warfare. It differs from preceding volumes by examining the planning and investigation of war mobilization rather than the actual harnessing of the economy for hostilities; and it is also the first book to treat all phases of the political economy of wartime during those crucial interwar years. Koistinen first describes and analyzes the War and Navy Departments' procurement and economic mobilization planning-never before examined in its entirety-and conveys the enormity of the task faced by the military in establishing ties with many sectors of the economy. He tells how the War Department created commodity committees to carry on the work of World War I's War Industries Board, and how both military and industrial powers strove to protect their mutual interests against those seeking to avoid war and to reform society. Koistinen then describes the American public's struggle to come to terms with modern warfare through the in-depth explorations of the work of the House Select Committee on Expenditures in the War Department, the War Policies Commission, and the Senate Special Committee Investigating the Munitions Industry. He tells how these investigations alarmed pacifists, isolationists, and neo-Jeffersonians, and how they led Senator Gerald Nye and others to warn against the creation of "unhealthy alliances" between the armed services and industry. Planning War, Pursuing Peace clearly shows how the U.S. economy was both directly and indirectly planned based on knowledge gained from World War I. By revealing vital and previously unexplored links between America's World Wars, it further illuminates the political economy of twentieth-century warfare as a complex and continually evolving process.

Book The Masses are the Ruling Classes

Download or read book The Masses are the Ruling Classes written by William Epstein and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-07 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Masses are the Ruling Classes proposes the radical, yet seemingly innocuous view that social policy in the United States is determined by mass consent. Contemporary explanations of decision making in the US typically attribute power over policy making to a variety of hidden forces and illegitimate elites holding the masses innocent of their own problems. Yet the enormous openness of the society and near-universal suffrage sustain democratic consent as more plausible than the alternatives -- conspiracy, propaganda, usurpation, autonomous government, and imperfect pluralism. Contrary to prevailing explanations, government is not either autonomous or out of control, business and wealthy individuals have not usurped control of the nation, large segments of the population are not dispossessed of the vote or of a voice in public affairs, and the media has not formed a conspiracy with Hollywood and liberals to deny Americans their God-given freedoms. Despite the multitude of problems that the nation faces, its citizens are not oppressed. In this pithy yet provocative book, Epstein argues that Democracy in the United States is not progressive but is instead populist, and that the core of the populist ideology is romantic rather than pragmatic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Football League in Nashville, Tennessee? It'll never happen. That's what they used to say. These days, it's hard to imagine the Music City without the Titans. Much has happened since the Houston Oilers packed up and left Texas for Tennessee following the 1996 season. NFL fans in Nashville had to remain patient. Finally, in 1999, the team moved into the city's downtown stadium, and the winning began. The Titans have been making history ever since. Clearly, it was all worth the wait. Jim Wyatt's Tales from the Titans Sideline takes readers from the early days in Nashville all the way to the present. It reviews the highs and lows of the team--and the players--the city has grown to love over the years. Fans remember the way the Coliseum shook after the Music City Miracle and the heartbreaking finish to Super Bowl XXXIV. Those are among the most memorable moments in the franchise's history that are included in the book. Readers have the chance to find out more about players like quarterback Steve McNair, running back Eddie George, and defensive end Jevon Kearse, all of whom quickly became household names in Tennessee. Coach Jeff Fisher has overseen it all. He managed to keep his team together during the move from the Astrodome to the Liberty Bowl to Vanderbilt Stadium to the Coliseum, keeping the winning ways going through the twists and turns. Tales from the Titans Sideline takes a look at more than just the wins and losses, however. It also provides fans with behind-the-scenes stories surrounding the team, exploring both the lighter and serious sides. What does McNair do to get ready for games? Why is kicker Joe Nedney not welcome in Pittsburgh? Why are birthdays sohush-hush on the Titans? Tales from the Titans Sideline will answer all of those questions and many more.

Coach: The Greatest Teachers in Sports and Their Lessons for Us All profiles coaches in every significant sport, from football, basketball, baseball, and hockey to gymnastics, skating, rowing, rugby, soccer, and more.
